The Cruise Ship and Cruise Line Discussion Thread!

Recommended Posts

^I agree. If a shipping trade publication could find the AIS tracking data of this journey and the previously approved salute in August, it really blows my mind that no one in the corporate office is responsible for tracking/logging the ships journies (I would assume they would WANT to track this for captain performance audits/see the fuel costs/etc.)

Also, the poor captain can't even keep his stories straight. I believe it was already reported that the retired captain that was allegedly being saluted was not even on the island, as that home is his summer home. However, it was reported that the head waiter had family on the island and his sister posted on facebook that the ship would be coming close to salute the island. He was also supposedly on the bridge for this salute.

This is definitely going to cost Carnival more than their estimated $100m loss.

“It’s true that the salute was for Commodore Mario Palombo, with whom I was on the telephone. The route was decided as we left Civitavecchia but I made a mistake on the approach. I was navigating by sight because I knew the depths well and I had done this manoeuvre three or four times. But this time I ordered the turn too late and I ended up in water that was too shallow.

“I don’t know why it happened, I was a victim of my instincts.”

The best part is when you read Mario Palombo's comments here:

Mario Palombo, a former Costa commander and colleague of the captain, said: "I've always had my reservations about Schettino. It's true, he was my second in command, but he was too exuberant. A daredevil. More than once I had to put him in his place."

The captain of the crippled Costa Concordia cruise ship, Francesco Schettino, has reportedly said the reason he was in a lifeboat while thousands of panic-stricken passengers and crew were trying to evacuate was because he “tripped” and fell into the rescue craft.

There is no suitable reaction for something this dumb. Like, what the actual hell? "Oh hey guys we have to get off th- OH $*@& A LIFEBOAT!"

Something to think about before speculating on what happened. The hole in the ship is opposite the land.

You make a valid point - but what about the possibility of rocks under the surface of the water on the side of the ship with the hole? Afterall it sank in shallow water so it seems fairly logical.

It's already been explained that the ship made a U-turn after hitting the rocks.

He ordered dinner after the crash!!!!

(CNN) -- The captain of the Costa Concordia ordered dinner for himself and a woman after the ship struck rocks off Italy's coast, a cook from the ship told a Filipino television station.

In an interview with GMA Network, cook Rogelio Barista said Capt. Francesco Schettino ordered dinner less than an hour after the accident.

"We wondered what was going on. ... At that time, we really felt something was wrong. ... The stuff in the kitchen was falling off shelves and we realized how grave the situation was," Barista told GMA.

Schettino ordered dinner around 10:30 p.m. Friday, Barista said. Authorities say the ship struck the rocks at 9:41 p.m.

"I have had 12 years of experience as a cook on a cruise ship. ... I have even witnessed fires, so I wasn't that scared," Barista said. "But I did wonder, though, what the captain was doing ... why was he still there."

Cruise ship port logs released Cruise ship survivors describe chaos Limited legal options for cruise victims

The ship hit rocks off the coast of the Italian island of Giglio on Friday night.

At least 11 people are known to have died in the disaster, and 21 are still missing, according to the Italian Crisis Unit.

Criticism from both Costa Cruises and the authorities has focused so far on Schettino, who is under house arrest and facing possible charges of manslaughter, shipwreck and abandoning ship.

Coast guard records published Thursday by an Italian newspaper pile further pressure on the captain of the Concordia and his officers, suggesting that the authorities first became aware of the crash from a friend of the mother of a passenger about 15 minutes after the ship hit rocks.

Schettino's brother-in-law defended him in an Italian newspaper Thursday.

Schettino "managed to avoid a tragedy -- it could have been worse," Maurilio Russo said in Corriere della Sera.

And he denied that the captain had abandoned ship.

"He was not running away, he came down (from the ship) to survey the damage," Russo said.

^I seriously don't even believe this story anymore!?!? It's just becoming more and more bizarre every day. I really do believe the next thing we'll hear is that he was throwing puppies overboard!

Or engaging in . . .

. . . cat juggling!

It would nice to see some actual "journalism" for a change. They just report any little "fact" that someone else spews out nowadays.

Just reported on the news...

"Carnival has launched a system-wide investigation of their ships safety procedures and will make changes based on those results."

Doesn't Carnival KNOW what their ships safety procedures already are??!?!?

I'm confused by this. I hear that and in my mind I'm picturing a meeting between executives at the Carnival HQ:

"So how did this happen?"

"We're not sure!"

"Why didn't they have a muster drill?"

"Did they not?"

"The news is reporting NO."

"Oh...should we look into that?"

"I guess?"

"Let's ask our ships what they do in case of an emergency."

"Ok."

"Do you want a Bud Light?"

"It's only 10am."

"Is that too early?"

"I guess not..."

Oh, Carnival.....

My bad. I must have missed that.

Seems according to reports that Schettino was entertaining a moldavan blonde over dinner and they were enjoying a decanter of red wine.

As has been said it just gets more and more bizarre.

And on the Today show it was reported that said blonde told the police and reporters that the captain was on the ship for over three hours helping passengers... while other reports, including from the captain himself, say he *whoops* tripped into a lifeboat and was out sipping coffee with some random taxi driver while the evacuation was going on.

Seriously...what the hell Carnival?!?!?

Isn't it about time the parent company step in and release an official statement about what REALLY happened? I cannot image that the actual story would be any more embarrassing for Carnival than all of these insane, crazy reports that have come out since the accident. Or could it???

I don't get all of the Carnival hate, here. Before this completely avoidable tragedy, was there a company-wide track record of events that would elicit the "well, it IS Carnival" replies? I am no fan of Carnival's cruise vacation presentation and execution, but I don't recall hearing tons of stories that result in this story being "well, there goes Carnival AGAIN" (in regards to their policies, procedures and staff training). Maybe the track record is there, and I'm sure it will be pointed out quickly by the Carnival haters.

There is no doubt that the two big lasting images from this will be that giant ship laying on it's side in shallow waters and the picture of the captain being escorted into that car. One main thing I've always noted on my cruises is how almost all (regardless of line) of the captains came across as insanely smug and self-important. I've wondered just how much "work" they actually do, and how much responsibility they really have, but damn I wouldn't have guessed that one would react as poorly as this guy. The best part was the way the Italian coast guard guy reprimanded him for his behavior (though I have to say the reenactments of the exchange by English translators have been pretty bad)!

^ I think it is the reaction (or non-reaction in the case) of Senior Mgmt (CEO) that is a major problem here. I think it would be different if the 3 things in this article where done.

3 Things Carnival Must Do Now to Manage the Costa Crisis

1. Go to Italy, now! Carnival CEO Micky Arison needs to get on the overnight plane to Italy right now. He’s left the response to Costa spokespeople but clearly it hasn’t been enough. Worse, some business publications are commenting that Arison is issuing press statements from Miami. This makes him looked detached. Last I checked Miami is 5,000 miles away the scene of the wreck. Get on site now.

2. Demonstrate empathy–a lot of it. On his plane ride to Italy Arison should memorize the name of every one of the people who died. His staff should find out something about these people and Arison should meet with the families as soon as possible. Whenever Arison holds a news conference—and there should be many—he should talk about the families he met and outline the exact the policies that Carnival will put in place to avoid another catastrophe. Show that you care.

3. Be visible. Arison should be holding daily, if not twice -a-day, news conferences. Any information is better than no information. Keep the public updated constantly.

A crisis can take down a major brand in minutes and it can take years to restore a reputation. In any crisis—small or large—top leaders must be visible, empathetic, and communicative.

^^ Actually yes, there was a track record. Carnival has had a bizarrely large number of instances of accidents in port recently - most minor, but it does show a "cultural" issue that you don't see with the other line and/or companies. Then we can talk about the fires both on carnival and princess and the accident that killed crew members on Costa the other year. You just don't really see these issues as consistently (if ever) on the other lines.

I don't get all of the Carnival hate, here.

Um, Carnival is terrible? They are the Wal-Mart of cruise lines? Guy Fieri is licensed on their ships? So is George Lopez? What's not to hate?!??!

Before this completely avoidable tragedy, was there a company-wide track record of events that would elicit the "well, it IS Carnival" replies?

Yes, plenty. Let's see, ship on fire, ship lost power, dead baby in bathroom, ship stranded for days, another ship on fire, ships bashing into other ships, the list of awesome Carnivalness goes on and on...

Sure, all the ships seems to have their fair share of problems, but it always seems to be Carnival ships that have the most. Now, you can argue that Carnival also has the most ships, but after a LOT more has surfaced from this incident, I think it's pretty clear to see that Carnival isn't the best run company on the planet...and they got caught with their pants down.

We don't hate to be bullying anyone, which is what you're implying, we hate because they are honestly terrible!
