Source I really like this idea. My wife and I have always wanted to try a cruise mainly to relax and for the food. Feels almost like a starter pack for people who aren't too sure about the cost o

Gooberfish caviar?

The whole ship looks amazing. As does the Star Wars theming and events.

And the food, of course. Mmmm pork tenderloin. Yummy!

Thanks for sharing this Media Event Robb, Elissa and Kristen.

^If this is your worst nightmare, you must have a pretty awesome life!

I'm not a Star Wars fan and haven't seen any of the new movies, but nothing 'bothered me' or got in my way at all. Pretty easy to ignore/avoid if you just wanted a normal day at sea.

I am a downer on this one as I think this really works only with a US Crowd. For those who like this, good for them and have fun. For me, it would be my worst nightmare.

Wow, thanks for your highly positive (sarcasm), and also totally incorrect opinion (this only works with a US crowd) on this subject. You know that you don't HAVE to hear yourself speak, right? And the rest of us will go about our day just fine?

one of my friends, who does a TON of cruising, went in Jan on the "Star Trek" cruise.

He had invited me along, and it was really inexpensive too (guess they were having issues filling both sailings, since the rooms were REALLY cheap for a 5 day cruise featuring tons of Star Trek cast members, and lots of themed activities).

Anyways, I couldn't join him since I didn't have the time off, and it was sailing out of Florida and he asked if I wanted to join like 5 days prior to cruising.

the point of my story here? he was concerned about going, since he's NOT a Star Trek fan at all, and was just grabbing it as a cheap cruise, but he was concerned he'd be miserable.

he not only was NOT miserable, he had so much fun (terming it among the best cruises he's ever taken) that he has already booked full cost passage for the 2019 Star Trek Cruise.

The pics he shared during the "red shirt" parties, hanging out with cast members, the Q&A's. .he said he didn't do his regular cruise stuff, since he was having such a ball with the Trek group.

so.. long story short? don't judge it without experiencing it.

you might enjoy it.

--> He's made his Trek Cruise post public, so if there's interest, I'll ask him if I can link to his pictures here. . he took over 300.

How can a opinion be incorrect? It is just a my personal opinion that you do not have to agree with, which is fine. Not here to ruin anybodies day, but I think it should be ok to have a opinion on a message board, even if goes against the administrors opinion. And I speak a lot and hear myself too which is usually just fine.

^The itinerary for the cruises on Explorer are kind of like 'Alaska Lite'. Nothing wrong, in fact we're booked on one for next summer, but you certainly won't get the whole Alaska Experience. Now, that being said, you'll be on a better ship than 90% of Alaska cruises so that's an added bonus.

^^You can say what you want, but saying that in your opinion a Star Wars Day at Sea would be your 'worst nightmare' just makes you look dumb. You know, nuclear war, family member dying, waking up in class naked...these are nightmares, not a day on a cruise ship.

Your "opinion:"

this only works with a US crowd

Is wrong. Factually wrong.

Now THAT looks like a fun way to spend a day on the water.  (And those whimsical Star War characters never fail to make me laugh.  So droll!)

ELISSA, I've always thought of Kristen as your "Mini-Me."  But now, I'm also seeing a resemblance between her and your MOM, Janice!   3 generations of such pretty look-alikes sharing fun and fantasy!  Enjoy making all these special memories, together!

Hurtigruten's new expedition ship MS Roald Amundsen was launched today. The maiden voyage is scheduled to be in October this year. This will be the first expedition ship able to sail using only electricity over short distances. Since it is a hybrid ship it will reduce fuel consumption with up to 20% of what normal ships use.

A Carnival cruise in the South Pacific descended into violent anarchy

A Carnival cruise devolved into near-anarchy during its 10 days in the South Pacific, with some passengers locking themselves inside their cabins, others kicked off the ship and security guards brawling with vacationers in a bare-knuckles melee.

Carnival said it would investigate what happened after a video surfaced, showing the guards punching, kicking and threatening passengers during the worst of the fighting Friday. But the cruise line is already blaming “a large family group” for instigating the violence, which some passengers said escalated for days before security could contain it.

The trouble started after the Carnival Legend, which can carry more than 2,000 people, set sail from Melbourne to New Caledonia last week — though there are disputes of exactly when and why it all began.

“This is all over a thong [flip-flop sandal] — not a foot, a thong being stepped on,” a passenger told the radio station 3AW, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. The thong’s trampler apologized, the man said, but its owner threatened retaliation, and the groups began to feud.

Others, however, said a single family of about two dozen people seemed intent on provoking conflicts — spitting in the pool, screaming in the smoking area and fighting with passengers and staff over any provocation.

“They were looking for trouble from the minute they got on the ship,” Kellie Peterson told 3AW. “Anyone and everything. They even picked on a 16-year-old boy because they thought he looked at them.”

After several days at sea, chaos broke out on the pool deck. It’s not clear what caused the dispute, though one passenger told News.com.au that it went on for 45 minutes, some of which was recorded. Children watched from behind a row of sun chairs as dozens of adults shouted on the far end of the deck. A man got into a brief shoving match with a uniformed staff member — a prelude of the melee to come.

In a statement to The Washington Post, Carnival confirmed “several instances [of] extremely unruly behavior” on the ship.

Some passengers described it more as a state of constant fear.

Peterson told 3AW that security warned her, her husband and their three young children not to travel the decks alone. Lisa Bolitho said she and her son simply locked themselves inside their cabin, according to the Australian Associated Press.

^Have you seen the pix from when they were removed from the ship? Still flicking off passengers and cursing. Quality.

Yeah, those were some high-class passengers. You know it's bad when even Carnival doesn't want you on their ship!

That's a pretty big ship! It'll look even better when all the containers are on it.

It’ll be a bit for that. Sea trials in June with a July delivery. I can’t wait for it to be out of my hair and on its regular Hawaii runs. Laying keel for its sister next week.

Royal Caribbean has announced a major upgrade to CoCoCay!

https://www.royalcaribbeanpresscenter.com/press-release/1350/royal-caribbean-eyes-next-generation-of-cruisers-with-multibillion-dollar-investment-in-ships-experiences-and-destinations/

Vacation time is precious, and travelers today have higher expectations and more options than ever. Consumers continue to invest more in experiences and make choices based on the range of emotional benefits gained from quality time away. Knowing this, Royal Caribbean International is making a multibillion-dollar investment in providing its loyal guests and the next generation of cruisers with the most advanced, customizable vacation adventures that will lead to rich, memory-making moments worth experiencing and repeating.

New Global Private Island Collection Debuts at CocoCay, Bahamas in 2019

A cruise vacation is much more than the ship itself. In one of the company’s most ambitious projects yet, Royal Caribbean is changing what it means to thrill and chill on vacation with the unveiling of its new Perfect Day Island Collection, a series of unrivaled and exclusive private island destinations around the world.

The first in the collection, Perfect Day at CocoCay, is a $200 million transformation of the cruise line’s existing private island in The Bahamas that will deliver the ultimate family destination in the Caribbean.

Highlights include:

  • Thrill Waterpark, featuring two brag-worthy water towers with 13 slides – the most slides found in any waterpark in the Caribbean – will include the 135-foot-tall Daredevil’s Peak, the tallest waterslide in North America. In addition, the waterpark will feature the Caribbean’s largest wave pool and a kid-friendly obstacle course pool.
  • Oasis Lagoon, the Caribbean’s largest freshwater pool, with a swim-up bar and in-pool loungers.
  • A 1,600-foot zip line that crisscrosses the island at up to 50 feet high and features the only water landing in the Caribbean.
  • A helium balloon, dubbed Up, Up and Away, floats up to 450 feet above the ground providing for the highest vantage point in The Bahamas.
  • Two specially designed beaches – Chill Island for the ultimate beach escape, complete with pristine, crystal-clear tropical waters and white powder-like sand – and plentiful cabanas and daybeds for relaxation; and the action-packed South Beach with volleyball, beachside basketball, soccer, paddle boarding, glass-bottom kayaking and zorbing in an inflatable zorb ball.
  • The exclusive Coco Beach Club, will offer an upscale island experience that will feature the first overwater cabanas in The Bahamas.

Royal Caribbean ships departing from the U.S. states of New York, Maryland and Florida will call at Perfect Day at CocoCay, providing guests with vacation adventures like no other in the Caribbean. The island transformation will roll out in phases beginning September 2018 with the completion of a new pier, and by spring 2019 the majority of the island’s experiences will be open. Coco Beach Club, the final phase, is set to open November 2019. Additional Perfect Day Island Collection destinations in Asia, Australia and the Caribbean will be announced at a later date.

“It’s true that our ships are technological and engineering marvels in their own right and offer a multitude of unexpected experiences; but our destinations are an equally important part of the cruise vacation,” said Michael Bayley, President and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “We are introducing the Perfect Day Island Collection to deliver the most memorable vacation for adventure seekers on land and on board our ships. Once completed Perfect Day at CocoCay will be the ultimate family destination in the Caribbean.”

Royal Amplified Fleet Modernization Will Deliver New Innovations On Every Deck

Adding to recently announced digital innovations, including frictionless check-in, stateroom technology and a new mobile app, the cruise line has committed $900 million to reimagining its fleet through a new modernization effort called Royal Amplified. Spanning 10 ships in four years, the program will touch every facet of the guest experience, and introduce a wide range of innovative features and bold, new experiences, including specialized pool spaces, experiential dining and nightlife concepts, and first-of-its-kind attractions like Sky Pad, an out-of-this-world virtual reality, bungee trampoline experience. Royal Amplified reflects the company’s passion for innovation, relentless attention to detail and commitment to delivering the best vacation in the world.

Weekend Getaways Reimagined

Royal Caribbean’s increased popularity among millennials resulted in the cruise line being named “Cruise Line Brand of the Year” in The Harris Poll’s 29th annual EquiTrend Study. This important, rising generation of travelers opts for more frequent and often shorter vacations, and Royal Caribbean is answering that call by amping up its short Caribbean getaways, setting a new industry standard. In summer 2018, Mariner of the Seas will undergo a $90 million modernization adding new thrills, including Sky Pad and a glow-in-the-dark laser tag experience; The Bamboo Room, a retro lounge with tiki-chic décor; and the fun, vibrant Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade. Mariner will sail 3- and 4-night cruises from Miami, FL redefining the weekend getaway.

Sister ship Navigator of the Seas will follow in 2019, and receive an even more extensive modernization before joining Mariner of the Seas to offer short escapes. In 2019, both ships will call extensively on Perfect Day at CocoCay, making for the most ultimate quick getaway.
