The Cruise Ship and Cruise Line Discussion Thread!

Recommended Posts

  • 3 weeks later...

Royal Caribbean announced a new partnership with DreamWorks Animation to bring characters from their films to Allure of the Seas when it debuts and possibly other ships as well. They mention things like Character Breakfasts, meet and greets, etc. I wonder if it is a direct attempt at DCL? Generally the demographic who likes Dreamworks animated films is different than the one who prefers Disney...but I am sure there will be some cross over. Interesting to see what happens!

I don't get whats going on with all the Carnival bashing on this thread. I'm reading posts that are bashing Carnival from people who've never even cruised on the line! I cruised on them twice, and although I did enjoy Princess cruises better, I found Carnival to be an okay cruise line. Unlike what I've read, there wasn't any drunk dudes passing out or puking in the atrium! It's a normal cruise line! ( but it's not that great either)

Well, Norwegian Epic was handed over to Norwegian Cruise Line on Thursday and left St. Nazaire not long after- she cruised to Rotterdam where she boarded her first paying guests for a 1 night cruise to nowhere. The following link is to a discussion on Cruise Critic that is focusing on the latest photos of Epic... Personally, I am quite surprised at her interior- it's quite classy, actually... not very bright like the previous classes of ships for NCL.

A few teaser shots:

Honestly, she didn't turn out as bad as her original renderings would have suggested.

Images begin on this page and continue for the next several, including images from a passenger who is currently aboard.

Also, NCL is posting videos to their channel on a regular basis at www.youtube.com/NCLFreestyle including this one, which I figured the TPR crowd would enjoy:

Please help a newbie out...

A good friend of mine is having a bunch of us go on a cruise to celebrate his wedding this October. We are only going on a 4 day Baja Mexico cruise on Carnival. The ship is the Carnival Paradise and it sails on October 11th.

My wife and I have never been on a cruise, and I have read the stories in the forums about Carnival being the least preferred cruise line.

So, my question: What type of cabin should we be trying to get for a cruise of this type? Or, perhaps a better question, should we just bail on the cruise and wait for a better cruise for our first experience?

Any advice you would be willing to provide would be tremendous.

Thank you very much.

I'm sure Elissa and Reed can reponse a bit better on this than I can, but this sounds like it's going to be more of a "booze cruise" that anything else.

So if lots of Bud Light and random drunken activity aren't your thing, you might want to hold off to do a slightly better, less intoxicating cruise.

But if that IS your thing...you'll have a great time!

^I totally see Robb's point, but I would still probably rather be on a Carnival Cruise than at work!!!

This is going to be a 'cheap' sort of cruise and even the nice cabins on this ship are nothing special so I would just go with a standard inside cabin.

It is an older Carnival ship so you actually have quite a few things going against you. There are no balcony cabins on this ship except for suites - so I would just do an interior and save the cash. As long as you know what you are getting into (a short cruise in a second tier "party" market on one of their older ships) you will be OK. Just please, please, PLEASE don't assume that all cruising is like what you are going to experience. Like all travel, cruising is what you make of it - if you go in with lower expectations and a chill and relaxed attitude, I am sure you will have a good time.

Like Elissa said, Cruising is *always* better than work..

It's odd, Carnival Paradise has not received any of the upgrades her Fantasy-class sisters have... no WaterWorks, no balconies... but she does have the Serenity area? Did they cut the budget or something? Is this a sign the Paradise may leave Carnival's fleet soon?

After years of going on Cruise Ships (and in all honestly I've been on more ships than parks... going on several every year) I would have to say the worst large company is Carnival, and the best, by far is Royal Caribbean. I've been on the Oasis of the Seas, and it is just amazing! Beautiful, fun, exciting, and overall a great vacation that's comparable to a theme park. I already have an Allure trip planned for next year.

We are not big drinkers, (especially not Bud Light), so I am not sure this will be for us.

I guess the overall thing that we need to keep in mind is don't expect too much, so we will not be let down.

Thanks for the replies.

I have only been on Carnival (5+) and Royal Caribbean (twice) but I have always enjoyed it and did not feel like it was a bad crusie experience in anyway. I felt like the cabins were nice, the food was good and the staff were great. I have twice taken my mom and grandma on Carnival Paradise and it was an awesome time. I think I may have posted this before but here it is again.

My finance and I have a very large group post-wedding cruise planned with 40 of our close friends from college and home. Were sailing on the Carnival Sensation for a quick 3 night cruise to Nassau and back in January. Ive never been on a cruise and realize that Carnival, and January, aren't the best l cruise line/time to cruise but were very excited about the trip. We think that for our group of 40 young mostly single people, who are probably gonna do quite a bit of drinking and partying, the Carnival Atmosphere should be just fine and hopefully a lot of fun!

Elissa or anyone else out there have any suggestions for a group excursion thats fairly affordable and fun? Or suggestions on which excursions to completely avoid? We dock in Nassau (which I realize isn't the greatest port), and were docked there for almost the entire day (8am till 2am I think). The majority of our group has never been on a cruise so most excursions should be unique to them. Any suggestions from the TPR cruise experts out there would be appreciated! Thanks

^Nassau is pretty much the WORST port of call but you can certainly all still have fun.

There are a ton of independent tour vendors in Nassau that will work out a fun excursion for your group. Since you said affordable I won't even mention Atlantis and it's really fun waterpark because that would be way out of budget but if you feel like splurging that's the only thing that gets me off the boat in Nassau.

Yeah the Atlantis does look pretty incredible. The only reason I said affordable was because I'm not entirely sure how much everyone in the group is interested in spending on their excursion. We may just have to have a few different groups go on different excursions based on what everyone wants to do. Since we will be there in January snorkeling and going to a beach may not be the best idea but we'll see.

Do anyone know if the pools and water park at Atlantis are heated?

^ Yeah Nassau isn't that great. Last time we went a bunch of people tried to sell me drugs and I was only like, 11 or 12 at the time! But we did go on an excursion to a beach and the beach was very nice. So if you plan on going on an excursion try just a beach.

^^ Only some of the smaller pools are fully heated. I've been on many cruises in January and it really is a 50/50 chance if the ocean is warm enough to swim in.

Worse case scenario if no one wants to spend any cash - its fun taking one of the boats over to Atlantis (usually $5pp or so) and then walking around the casino and shops a little. You can then take a taxi back to the main shopping strip area which is within walking distance of the pier.

As Elissa said you can hire an independent tour operator to take your group around the island a do a little island tour. Cable Beach is pretty nice and you can swing around the back of the island and do a factory tour at the Bacardi Rum factory which includes lots of free samples . Really - moral of the story is don't do a ship excursion - if you need help planning let us know!

My girlfriend and I took our first cruise on the Carnival Sensation in Feb of 09. It was a lot of fun, but even in February the deck got kind of cold if there was any wind (especially on the water works). We splurged the money for shallow water dolphin interaction and the water park at Atlantis, which were both a lot of fun, but was nowhere near cheap. I think the water park excursion alone was almost $100, when we got it bundled with the dolphins it dropped to around $60.

Word of advice though, if you do go to Atlantis: take your credit card. The place is cashless and I ended up having to leave my brand new camera and our towels under a tree and hope nobody would take them (thankfully nobody did).

My family is thinking about taking a cruise on Freedom of the Seas this fall. We've been on two Carnival cruises and one Princess cruise, so cruising is not a new thing for my family. What I want to know is if there's anything that makes cruising on RCCL any different or better from the other lines. Any information from past Freedom cruisers would be great!
