Royal Caribbean today confirmed that a cruise ship it has on order for delivery in 2016 will be the largest ever built.

The line says the third vessel in its Oasis class series, to be called Harmony of the Seas, will measure 227,000 tons, eclipsing its two record-size sisters by more than 1,700 tons.

The 16-deck-high cruise ship will hold a record 5,479 passengers at double occupancy, nearly 100 more than the two earlier Oasis class vessels, the line says.

The first two Oasis class ships, Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, made waves in the cruise industry when they debuted in 2009 and 2010, respectively, and are by far the largest cruise ships currently afloat. Chock full of dozens of eateries, bars, showrooms and deck-top fun zones, they each measure 225,282 tons and carry 5,400 passengers at double occupancy.

Royal Caribbean today also confirmed that Harmony of the Seas would have giant, multi-deck water slides -- a first for Royal Caribbean. Currently under construction at the STX shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France, Harmony also will be the first Oasis class ship with a "bionic bar" where the drinks are served by robot bartenders -- a concept that first debuted in October on Royal Caribbean's new Quantum of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean says Harmony will have larger cabins than Oasis and Allure in some categories. In addition, windowless "inside" cabins will be outfitted with Royal Caribbean's exclusive Virtual Balconies, which offer a real-time view of the outdoors -- another concept that first debuted on Quantum of the Seas. Suite passengers also will have exclusive new areas to enjoy including a suite lounge, a private suites-only restaurant called Coastal Kitchen and a full-service Suite Sun Zone sun deck.

Cruisers aboard Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas are flocking to the Bionic Bar -- where robots perfectly mix custom drinks with precision.

Like Oasis and Allure, Harmony will be built around seven distinct neighborhoods: Central Park, Boardwalk, the Royal Promenade, the Pool and Sports Zone, Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center, Entertainment Place and Youth Zone.

Among the restaurants on Harmony will be a version of the whimsical Wonderland Imaginative Cuisine eatery that first debuted on Quantum of the Seas. Also planned is Sabor, the modern Mexican restaurant that Royal Caribbean just added to its nine-year-old Freedom of the Seas.

The three water slides planned for Harmony are clearly visible in several new artist's drawings of the ship added this week to Royal Caribbean's website. Royal Caribbean says they'll twist and turn over the ship's tree-lined Central Park area 10 decks below. One of the slides also will feature a champagne bowl that swirls passengers around as they make their approach to the end of the ride.

Harmony is scheduled to debut in April 2016. The line says it'll announce itineraries for the ship in March.

Even more reasons RCCL is awesome!

Engine Problems Slow Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship

A passenger on Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas has posted that the ship is currently experiencing engine problems and sailing at reduced speeds back to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The port stop in Ocho Rios, Jamaica was canceled on Thursday so the ship could arrive back to Fort Lauderdale on Saturday. The ship is currently on a five night sailing to the Western Caribbean with one previous port stop in Labadee, Haiti.

Announcements were made to the passengers about the engine problem and the need to sail at reduced speeds. For the inconvenience of missing the stop in Jamaica, passengers were given $100-$200 in onboard credit depending on the level of stateroom that they are staying in.

Cruise Fever has reached out to Royal Caribbean and will update this article when we receive word back from the cruise line.

Someone decided to jump off a Carnival ship (actually, it's the one I was on in December). The Klassy Kruise helped.

The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a Virginia Tech student who apparently fell overboard a Carnival Cruise ship near the Bahamas.

Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen said in a news statement that a 21-year-old male guest, whose name is being withheld, was reported missing from the Carnival Glory on Sunday morning. Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker said Tuesday night that the university was made aware of the search for the missing student.

Gulliksen said a review of camera footage confirmed a man overboard.

Authorities were notified, including the Coast Guard, which began search-and-rescue operations.

Another cruise ship, Carnival Ecstasy, deviated course at the company’s direction and assisted in the search up until Monday evening in collaboration with the Coast Guard and other vessels in the vicinity of Great Abaco Island, Bahamas, Gulliksen said.

Carnival Glory also returned to the location and participated for a period of time in the search, Gulliksen said. The ship is homeported in Miami and was on its first leg of a seven-day Caribbean cruise that departed Saturday.

The company’s CareTeam is providing support to the guest’s traveling companions and family.

Super excited to see Anthem been planning a coaster tour around New Jersey and beyond, for my 40th next year. I have now got a sneaky 5 night cruise on Anthem to chill out on after 6 parks in 9 days lol.

http://www.afr.com/business/tourism/royal-caribbean-dream-boat-to-debut-in-australia-in-2017-20150415-1mleb1

Can I say right now how damn excited I am that a QUANTAM class ship is coming to Australia in 2017! I've been looking enviously at the other ships that RCCL have and compared to anything we have in Australia this is just amazing.

About one million Australians took a cruise in 2014 in what has become a $1.8 billion dollar industry for Australia, according to the recent Economic Impact of the Cruise Shipping Industry in Australia study by AEC group.

Given Australia is the fastest growing cruise market in the world and among the most popular cruising destinations for international guests, Ovation of the Seas will spend the southern hemisphere 2016-17 cruising season home ported in Australia, completing five separate cruises around Australia and New Zealand between January and April 2017.

The shipping monolith - currently under construction in Germany for Royal Caribbean, the world's largest cruise company - will become the biggest, most expensive ship to debut here - and to be based in Australian waters for a season every year.

"This is a game changer - and the single largest investment in Australian cruising ever made," Royal Caribbean's regional vice president for Asia Pacific, Gavin Smith, said at a press conference in Sydney on Wednesday. "And we'll bring many more ships if we get the opportunity."

The announcement puts the NSW Government under even more pressure to sort out its long running dispute with the lucrative cruise industry to provide more opportunities for ships to berth in Sydney.

It's widely acknowledged by all players that Sydney's Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay and White Bay cannot cope with the rapidly increasing demand; other solutions - including the use of Garden Island or the construction of a new port at Port Botany - need to be found.

"To give you some idea of the pressure Sydney is under, in 2017, between January 1 and Anzac Day, there are only three days when a cruise liner is not booked to be in port at the OPT at Circular Quay," Mr Smith told The Australian Financial Review.

"Royal Caribbean has 90 of those days – but we'd like to put on an extra 100 days. At this stage it's just not possible due to capacity pressure."

Present at the press conference, Port Authority of NSW CEO Grant Gilfillan agreed: "[Australia] is seeing a cruise liner penetration rate higher than the United States.

"We are very committed to trying to fnd that extra capacity." However, he said solutions would take yet more time to find.

Royal Caribbean has 45 ships sailing under five brands and operates the world's biggest cruise ships, often dubbed super or megaliners, including Oasis of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Rhapsody of the Seas and Oviation's sister ship, Quantum of the Seas.

Mr Smith said internal research shows Royal Caribbean passengers spend an average of $350 in port each day. "If we are carrying full capacity, thats about $2.5 million to be spent in port in Sydney alone" he said.

In April 2017, Ovation of the Seas will set sail to spend the northern cruising season in China - the other big driver of growth in the popularity of cruising in the Asia Pacific region.

With their giant water slides, rock climbing walls and basket ball courts, ships carrying 6500 people plus at sea might not be to everyone's taste.

But there's no denying ships like Ovation of the Seas are state of the art and break new ground in cruising. Passengers will be issued with wrist bands that double as room keys and will sport high speed wifi equal to that on land.

On board, they can enjoy a range of high tech activities including simulated sky diving and wave surfing.

There's even a "bionic bar" manned by robotic arms that make your cocktail. More old fashioned touches include a staking rink; Broadway shows - plus Jamie Oliver restaurants at sea
