Fain joined Royal Caribbean in 1979 as an outside director on the company’s Board of Directors. He became the cruise line’s Chairman and CEO in 1988. Prior to joining Royal Caribbean, Fain spent 13 years as treasurer, chief financial officer and joint managing director of Gotaas-Larsen Shipping Corp., a London-based owner and operator of cargo ships. Fain is a member of the National Conference for Community and Justice, and serves on the World Wildlife Fund’s National Council, the Florida Council of 100 and the University of Miami’s Board of Trustees. In addition, he serves on the executive committee of the United Way of Miami-Dade County. Fain is a former chair of the Miami Business Forum, the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau and of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), an industry trade association representing nearly 17,000 affiliated travel agencies and the bulk of the world’s cruise lines. He has also served as co-chair of the United Way Campaign of Miami-Dade County and as chair of the POW WOW Host Committee in Miami. In 2004, Fain received the Ultimate CEO Award from the South Florida Business Journal and accepted the Ellis Island Medal of Honor from the National Ethnic Coalition Organization. He was inducted into the South Florida Business Hall of Fame in October 2004. Fain was presented one of France’s most distinguished awards, the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur (French Legion of Honor), and was named Commander, First Class, of the Order of the Lion by Finland. In addition to being the recipient of the Anti-Defamation League’s 2000 Distinguished Community Service award, he was named the 1999 Statesman of the Year by the Wharton School Club of South Florida, as well as the 1998 Humanitarian of the Year by the American Red Cross of Greater Miami and the Keys. Fain holds a B.S. degree in economics from the University of California at Berkeley and a M.B.A. from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Fain and his wife, Colleen, have four children and reside in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The difference in responses between Carnival and RCCL shows in the experience of their leadership. Micky Arison is the face of the brand, and yet he'd rather be seen enjoying his toy (the Miami Heat). Meanwhile, RCCL is out there making sure everyone knows their CEO is doing everything possible. DirkFunk Posted May 29, 2013 Share Posted May 29, 2013 Bro, I'm not going to argue who has more degrees, who's company controls more marketspace, who's worth more money, or any of that. Arison and Fain have very different public profiles, and that Arison gets more publicity comes with the territory that he occupies compared to that of Fain, who up until this page in the thread no one even referred to existing. At this point, Fain hasn't done anything publically himself regarding the fire on the Grandeur and I don't hold it against him. Why should he? No one died. The ship didn't sink. People see Micky Arison as the face of Carnival, and he felt it was more important to be at the Heat game. To your point about Fain, on the flip side is how many people do you think know who the CEO of the Carnival brand is? I'm sure I am not the only one who automatically associates Arison with it. People don't know who Fain is, and regardless of what he is actually doing, the takeaway will be that they see headlines of "CEO on the ship apologizing to guests..." vs '"CEO takes in a Heat game..." even if it is not a totally fair comparison. To your point about Fain, on the flip side is how many people do you think know who the CEO of the Carnival brand is? I'm sure I am not the only one who automatically associates Arison with it. Arison is much richer than Fain for a multitude of reasons and has a public face because of his ownership of an NBA team. But every time something happens with a Carnival ship, Arison can't necessarily be there, nor should he be. Nor should Fain with Royal Caribbean. That you perceive the situation differently isn't something Carnival Corp. can much help, and Arison has to deal with the additional criticism because of his position, wealth, etc. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

CreativeForce Posted May 29, 2013 Share Posted May 29, 2013 Hey Elissa, not sure if you know this or not. Right now RCCL is offering a CA resident discount on a cruise we're watching for New Years. We were waiting to book it onboard the cruise we're taking in July so that we can take advantage of the onboard credit, but do you know if they'll honor the resident discount as well on board? Also somewhere on the RCCL site is a crazy list of what discounts can be combined and which can not! Stu K Posted June 4, 2013 Share Posted June 4, 2013 Hi guys just to say thank for hints and tips re parks around the Jersey port. Decided 9 days on a ship and just a few days for parks may not be enough so looking and 7 to 9 days for parks in May. Busch, Kings Domnin , Six flags and may try for Hersey and knobles. Then started to look at quantum for new years but Itinerary was not to exciting (even though the ship is). Found a great 12 night on legend that sails out on Christmas Eve. There is a park cafe so that's the salad that robb likes YES YES YES. The line today announced it had signed a contract with Germany's Meyer Werft shipyard for a third vessel in the much-awaited new series that will begin debuting next year. ... The as-yet-unnamed new ship will join the Royal Caribbean fleet in mid-2016, the line says. The first two vessels in the series, Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas, are scheduled to debut in fall 2014 and spring 2015, respectively. As with theme park rides, it's not like we'll be anywhere near the first people on the ship as there's a transatlantic to bring it over, about 10 days when nothing's been announced for the ship, then two short revenue cruises, then our inaugural, but we're still excited!
