DerekRx
Another Southern sampling last night from Atlanta Brewing. and that shock was followed by coughing and crying. Wow, 90 minute broke Nicole! Nicole, on the other hand, wasn't too impressed. She can tolerate IPAs now, loves stouts and imperial stouts, but is just shocked by the sweetness of an imperial ipa One terrific imperial IPA, good balance but loads of sweetness Next up, time for some 90 minute Not too much banana flavor, but plenty of lemon. Actually pretty good, but it had some weird bitterness in its finish that tasted almost like peanut skins Atlanta's Summer Hefeweizen, really hazy and orange juice looking, but lemon smelling
Rugged One
^ That's awesome! I guess it gives new meaning to the term "alcohol abuse".
Bubba83
Well well well... I didn't think I'd miss that much beer action during finals week, but by golly, I did! Thanks for attempting to take a picture of the Victory Kolsch description Heath, I tried hard, but couldn't really read much of it. I've been reading everyones posts in the beer thread despite my posting absence. I didn't do much beer drinking during finals week, naturally, but I did do some the weekend before it started, and I never got a chance to post the pictures. Since I am just getting back from the obligatory post-finals week BevMo trip, I figured now would be a good time to get caught up by posting the photos from last weekend. Also, Derek and Heath, I picked up some Hop Stoopids for you incase you can't find them somewhere else when you come labor day. I don't really know how I'm going to meet up with you guys yet, I just might not be able to get up to the Santa Rosa area this time. So maybe I can meet you guys at PGA or something like that. Onto the beers... Yeah, it's like that. Some nice light hoppiness that plays nicely on the palate and is dry and crisp. Tire Bite Kolsch, the last of the six pack. Farewell my favorite Kolsch from a bottle friend! Aye, it was love at first sight with this beer. But Racer 5 DEFINES my favorites category. A strong grapefruit hop character makes this IPA a contender in my favorites category... Anderson Valley's Hop Ottin IPA. Quickly becoming a standby for my uncle and I. I didn't like this amber much at all. The flavors don't come through very cleanly and they just sort of all meld together into a flavor I don't much like. Full Sail's Amber. I finally sprung for a six pack of the stuff so I could try something from this brewery. It was okay, but nothing special in my opinion. I'd rather have any of Samuel Smith's other brews. Samuel Smith's Tadcaster Bitter. 3.8% ABV. Back in college before I became such a beer enthusiast, I used to think Fat Tire was one of the most flavorful beers I had tried, now it tastes like water... Started off with a flat tire at my Uncles... Hey Matt! Hey Heath, here's how you take a non blurry picture of small text! Okay okay, it did take me like 20 tries to get the lighting right... Look at those ingredients! It did taste like licorice! Virgil's Rootbeer. This stuff is crazy! It's unlike anything I've tasted. They use all sorts of weird stuff in there. Very good. This is what I ate while enjoying a Hank's Rootbeer. Hank's is a nice classic style rootbeer that reminded me of Dad's. It wasn't bad, infact, it was really good! A nice Barley-Wine that isn't overly sugary sweet, but instead has really nice fruity flavors. Moylan's Old Blarney Barley-Wine Style Ale. 10% ABV. I had this the night after the skunked Moylan's IPA, hoping it wouldn't also be bad.
-Zingo-
I made a stop by Total Wine today, I was really looking to find some new DIPA's and was frustrated when the Stoudts and DFH that I've already tried was all I could find. Then I noticed the bomber section - score. First thing I saw in the bomber section, Great Divide's Hercules Double IPA. If your beer was missing some hops tonight, it's cause this one stole it. I like, lucky for me I got a 2nd round. Round 2 - This only got better as it warmed up. The malts finally showed up to provide a nice balance. Either that or my palate was so screwed up it was getting used to the hops. Definately one of the best DIPA I've tried so far, this will be a regular in my fridge. DerekRx
Just chilling at home on this Friday evening. Even a double shot of this won't last long! To stick with the pale ale theme, time for a double helping of Shelter Pale Ale from Dogfish Head Pretty good pale ale, good citrus flavors but not too bitter First up, the 420 Extra Pale Ale from Sweetwater Brewing
Bubba83
Last night I went over to my Uncle's for a present he got me for finishing school. He managed to find Dad's Root Beer! So now I have a four pack sitting in my fridge. Still my favorite root beer. Of course, we had to drink some beers while I was over there... It hits you with a burnt bitterness that makes the mouth pucker a bit. I wish the background flavor came through with something to balance it out a little more. Guinness Extra Stout. I've tried this many a time also. Still with as nice a flavor as ever, and one of my favorite stouts. Probably just behind Shakespeare Stout, so I guess it's #2 on my stout list. Big Bear Black Stout, an instant classic from a while ago. Quite good, probably my favorite from this brewery so far. As it warms you get some nice fruity flavors in the aftertaste. Preceeding them is some nice toffee flavors. Hobgoblin, from Wychwood in the UK. 5.2% ABV. My Uncle found a six pack fo the stuff. I've never tried it before. I have tried Fiddler's Elbow and Scarecrow though.
DerekRx
Last night was more time hanging out at Heath's, to drink some of the stuff I purchased a few weeks ago at Capones. Back to more Oberon before we drained the keg and called it a night. Meanwhile the girls enjoyed some sangria Um, yeah, glad we only got 1 small bottle of this Next, Weyerbacher's newest brew, their 12th Anniversary, called Twelve fittingly. A Rye Barleywine?? OMG this was incredible. One fantastic double IPA using 15 different types of hops, the most prominent being that usual San Diego style hop Now for that Capones stuff. Hop 15 from Pizza Port! One of the best beers out there and it tastes good too! We'd have a few pints of this throughout the night It's cute AND easy to use! But before we drink the Capone's stuff, Heath got a mini-keg of Bell's Oberon a few weeks ago
DerekRx
Yesterday after a very wet and crowded day at Hersheypark, we decided to hit up the nearby Appalachian Brewing in Harrisburg for dinner and brews. and Nicole also went the dessert route, grabbing the Framboise lambic. Very sour and tart, but had better raspberry taste than the peche had peach for dessert, Heath went with the Peche lambic. No Lindeman's, this was served a little too cold and needed time to warm up before the peaches came out another tasty brew, nice and crisp Next for me, the Dom Blonde Kolsch. A little description of it I went with the Mad Cameron Belgian White. A little taste of hotdog water, but pretty good and spicy. Didn't taste anything what I'd expect Cameron to taste like Heath started out with the Susquehanna Stout, served on cask this time. Hopefully the hearty stout will warm him up an impressive assortment, including their summer, a Belgian white, their marzen, and 2 lambics. Back to ABC, let's see what's on tap this time
Bubba83
Last night I had an Arrogant Bastard over at my Uncles. I think I forgot to mention this, but even though I went to BevMo on friday at 2:30pm, they were still stocking everything... I was a little confused because it was an odd time of day to have that much crap sitting in the isles, but I did noticed a few cases of Arrogant Bastard that weren't yet shelved, so I had the stock guy open up the cases for me so I could grab a bomber. That has been a long time coming since I first tried it in Arizona, because the local BevMo sells out of that stuff like it's going out of style. In other news, I'm leaving on tuesday to fly to Omaha to visit my dad. He has lived out there for 5 years or so and I've been visiting him every summer. I've never been a beer lover while being out there though, so I've done my research using BeerFly of course. Beertopia looks like the best store by far to hit up, and I'm excited about it because in that part of the country I'll be able to attain plenty of stuff I can't get here. They also have a "create your own six pack" option with single 12 ouncers that is just a great idea that I wish BevMo would employ. There is also a beer bar named Crescent Moon down there that sounds like a treat, so my dad and I will definitely be hitting both places. He's not a beer guy or anything, but enjoys a good one once in a while. I can only hope I won't wimp out on pictures this time, for the sake of the beer thread. Has anyone else been to Omaha and been to beer places? I'm also thinking we might go to Upstream Brewery, as it seems like that might be the only other place that is really worth it there. Any suggestions for what I buy at the beer store? I'll be there for a week and I'm not really sure I will be able to bring much home, so my selection might be on the small side at the beer store. Help me out guys!!! What do I get? Onto the beers... Damn, this might be the best beer I've ever had. It's a hop lovers dream. It is so pungeant but doesn't overwhelm. The mouthfeel is dry yet smooth. It's one of the lightest IPAs let alone DIPAs I've had, and also the most flavorful. It's close to Hop Stoopid, just a little better in my opinion. I wrote a BA review on this one, my first review... http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/220/38225 If Derek and Heath were interested in Hop Stoopid, then surely they will be intrigued by this one as well. Kill Ugly Radio by Lagunitas. 7.8% ABV. It's a DIPA that is limited release. This porter is excellent. I'm not sure how it fairs compared to Deschutes Black Butte Porter, because I haven't had that in a while either, but I can say that it was awesome. Porters are definitely one of my favorite styles. Started out tonight with something I hadn't tried before... An Anchor Porter. Porter's are something I've been wanting to familiarize myself with more since I love Black Butte Porter so much. 5.6% ABV. Uhh yeah, still excellent. I was able to taste some cherry and black currant flavor in here. The 7.2% ABV isn't covered that well, nor is it really supposed to be. Warms you up nice but is pretty smooth going down, would be excellent on a cold winter night, has some brandy characteristics. Arrogant Bastard, by far the best labeling/attitude on a bottle. 7.2% ABV. It's a strong ale.
Rugged One
^Sweet! Another Frank Zappa beer! I'd go post your Omaha queries in the Midwest forum over at BA or do a search for past questions in that forum. Beer nerds are just like coaster nerds over there. FlyerACE1
This post is about 9 days late but better late than never, right? On the weekend of August 11-12, Ellen and I traveled down to Rehoboth Beach, DE to stay at my cousin's friend's house. Of course, no trip to Rehoboth is complete without a stop at the home of my favorite brewery, Dogfish Head. Now, on to the pictures... Here's a look at the downstairs bar on our way out. As you can imagine, a Saturday in August produces quite a crowd! I can't wait to be back to this very popular place. New Year's Eve!!?? Hell yeah! Aaaahhh....TRUE LOVE!! My cousin's version of the hop face and surprise of never having anything quite like this. For the finale, I ordered my favorite, 90-Minute IPA. The ladies took the hop challenge. Check out Ellen's hop/what the hell face! Next up for yours truly, a favorite of mine- Raisin D'Etre. Another group shot with me in it. Here is the gang enjoying their beers. John and Drew have the Lawnmower Light. Chris has a Raisin D'Etre. Ellen and Simone have Festina Peche. I decided to try the brewpub exclusive Johnny Rawton Pilsener. Not a fan of Pilseners although this one wasn't bad. Not great though. First up for Ellen, Festina Peche! Yummm!! Inside finally! For the first time, we sat upstairs. I definitely like the upstairs better. Way less hectic! Here is the gang, making their first beer thread appearance, waiting for a table- standing is Chris, Drew and John (the last two own the house). Sitting is my cousin Simone and wife Ellen. I love the little sayings they had throughout the brewpub. This one says- open 24 hours, just not in a row. Good one! Outside of Dogfish Head, located right on Rehoboth Avenue, a few blocks from the beach and boardwalk.
Yellow Jacket
A weekend challenge: Dinner came out nicely. Smoked hot wings basted with Bourbon, soy, and homemade cayenne pepper sauce--and then finished with the habanero honey glaze; a nice mixed green salad with balsamic vinagrette; oven roasted rosemary garlic potatoes; grilled bread; and a Yuengling Black and Tan to wash it down. Me! I get to drink them both on a regular basis. I have the Sweetwater nearly every Thursday when we go out for pizza after Juggling Club and I keep a regular supply of Terrapin in the beer fridge too. OK back to the grueling task at hand...as the beers warmed up, the malt in the 420 started showing up and it got much more balanced than the initial impression. The rye flavor that gives the Rye Pale Ale its interesting backbone (which may be an aquired taste for some--but I like it) also stayed prominent. They are both mighty fine pale ales and the clear winner is... Time to baste the chicken The head dissipated after a few sips. The initial impression of the 420 was all citrusy hops while the Rye Pale Ale definately had a bit more character in the backbone. It's time for a showdown [cue western music..wah wah waaaah!..whip crack and whistling] between The Sweetwater 420 and Terrapin's Rye Pale Ale. They look very similar with the 420 having a slightly thicker head. I decided why not two? Saturday evening found me firing up the grill; and since it's against the law to do that without having a beverage in hand... Friday night dinner had me enjoying a Rye Pale Ale with dinner--Habanero honey glazed chicken strips, summer veggie medley over wild rice mix and some hearty whole grain bread. It got me to thinking...which of the Atlanta brewed pale ales is the best?

-Zingo-
Well unfortunately Big Bear Brewing Co was closed to the public saturday night for a wedding reception for one of their employees. Fortunately their brewer Matt brought my brother and I a Hibernation Pale Ale to enjoy in their outside seating area since he had to return home sunday morning. He invited me back next weekend to try their new IPA and said the 1st one's on him, so you know I'll take him up on that. I'll be sure to take some photo's while I'm there as well as the place looked really nice. The Hibernation PA was very good, little on the mild side hop wise which is to be expected here in S Fla, reminded me of Anchor's Liberty Ale. While the Holy Mackerel was very good, it did leave me craving a swift hop kick. DFH's 60 Minute to the rescue, it never dissapoints and @ $6.99 a sixer it something my wallet and taste buds can agree on. Started tonight with something local, Florida Beer Company's Holy Mackerel. This is a Belgian Strong Ale coming in at 8.5% ABV. Based on other sampes from this brewery I wasn't expecting much, consider me pleasantly surprised. This is the best beer I've tried that was brewed in FL. It smells great, hints of spice and then banana bread. The taste was even better, classic strong pale ale with a spicey twist. If you see this give it a try, way better then expected from a Florida brewery.
ParkTrips
tonight was a simple night, just one beer, and nothing too special or rare overall I liked it! It wasn't as amazing as some of the others that I've had, but still a pretty good beer that I would love to drink again It pours like, well, a doppelbock! a little head that makes me feel are warm and fuzzy inside I chose the Troegenator doppelbock for tonight

Rugged One
Mmmmm. Dogfish Head goodness tonight. Aaaah. Quite tasty! Very similar to their IPAs, this is very good for the style. I took my time with this one and it balanced out quite nicely as it warmed. The Shelter Pale Ale. One I actually haven't had in awhile.
DerekRx
Time to finish up my variety of Southern brews tonight with the final Atlanta Brewing beer, the Red Brick Ale. I may get wet, but at least I'll be happy! well, since it's raining hard, I think I'm gonna end up like this dude on the Troegs Dead Reckoning Porter label, may as well drink one Pretty tasty though, nice fruit flavors and brown sugar/molasses sweetness with a nice bitter hop balance Red Brick Ale, Beer Advocate says it's an English Brown Ale, even though it's more amber/red in color
Bubba83
Last night I took some time out of packing to have a beer. My flight leaves at 6pm PST this evening and I will get into Omaha late tonight for a week filled with beer, golf, and hopefully gambling too on the Riverboat casinos in Council Bluffs, Iowa. It was good. It reminded me a lot of La Fin Du Monde, except it wasn't quite as sweet on the front end and wasn't so spicy on the backend. That was welcome for me because I didn't care for that much spice. Highly recommend this. North Coast Brewing's Pranqster, A Belgian Strong Pale Ale. 7.6% ABV. At $5.99 a 4-pack, this stuff is a steal when compared to most belgians.
-Zingo-
What a scorcher here in S. Florida today. Next up, Jackman's APA from Left Hand Brewing Company. I graduated from Longmont High School so I figured it was time to give this brewery a try. This was a decent Pale Ale - nothing great but enjoyable. Hot day at work = A good Hefe-Weizen when I get home. Ayinger's Brau-Weisse is a little lighter than I prefer but I really like the spices in this one. DerekRx
Still cool and rainy yesterday, time to warm up with some Imperial IPA, Sly Fox style nice and hoppy, but I won't make Nicole try this one just yet and easy to drink. More flavors come out as it warms up It's no Hop 15, but it's still pretty darn good Last year's Odyssey, using 10 different hop varieties
Rugged One
Post # 666. Bwahahahaha... I love you! Finally, it's one of my personal favorites from Avery Brewing. The Mephistopheles Stout. Weighing in at a whopping 16% with a big, beefy body, deep notes of chocolate and coffee, and a lingering hot finish, this beast of a stout definitely isn't for the faint of heart or palate. Ahhhh. Very nice. Fairly smooth, sweet, and malty with a nice dry bitterness to the finish. This should go over nicely as their Fall beer. First stop. The latest seasonal brew from Troegs. The Dead Reckoning Porter. I tasted this as a single batch release the first time I ever visited the brewery but didn't remember too much about it.
