What Was the Last Beer You Drank?

Wow, the beer thread is becoming a very popular place for our UK peoples. Welcome to the pub, friend.

Tonight I was fortunate enough to get a Longshot Boysenberry Wheat from Sam Adams homebrewers contest. Thanks Adam!

He warned me that it smelled really good, but didn't taste that way. I found it to be very much what it was advertised as, very boysenberryish both in smell and in taste. Tasted kinda like Knott's Berry Punch mixed with a hefeweizen. I kinda liked it, but I wouldn't drink a whole lot of them.

Very fruity and not too shabby (the beer, not me)

Still pretty darn cold today. No better way to get warmed up than with a nice Imperial Stout. In this case the Dragonslayer from Middle Ages Brewing in Syracuse, NY.

176821649_beer012.jpg.b6312f20628e3e2456a2e342a8412c25.jpg

It's no Derekslayer but is still a pretty servicable Imperial Stout.

194648345_beer011.jpg.2699daaf27791956171cb541559fdc59.jpg

Decent Imperial. Nice roasty chocolate and fruits upfront. It had a fairly thin body however but masked it's almost 10% abv pretty darn well.

Not back in work now till the weekend so I decided to have a Ruby and a few beers whilst watching the footie on the TV. Wandered down the local off licence and picked up Holts "Maplemoon", Moorhouses "Pendle Witches Brew", Marstons "Owd Roger" and finally Robinsons "Old Tom." Now the Owd Roger was nothing new to me but the other three were ones I had yet to try.

IMG_1389.JPG.41205e84cd6855216e6d745a299ad5e2.JPG

Is that an Old Tom or are you just pleased to see me?

IMG_1386.JPG.81edc306b37d33dc653090736806c3a8.JPG

The final ale of the evening is Old Tom coming in at 8.5% and a classic dark ale. A lovely rich fruity taste with an almost Port like aftertatste. YUMMY!

IMG_1384.JPG.9661221e51333666e3d4b6008711e3b9.JPG

Another new one to the palette next, Pendle Witches Brew at 5.1%. Another light ale with bags of flavour and a nice malty aftertaste.

IMG_1381.JPG.36f8482029b2ba23eff2fb63fe120de9.JPG

Start with the lowest ABV so first up the Maplemoon at 4.8%. A nice light ale with a very subtle hint of Maple.

Thought I'd join you for a quick beer, but as it's a long way from here to your place, this seems like a good place .....

Derek likes that cuz now he can get this rather weak ass beer credit without actually having to pay for it.

Laughs out loud at the above antics.

So you didn't enjoy yourselves at all then?

Well in just over a week the BlueBuzzards are invading the Oakwood Beer Festival with the express aim of going beyond the 113 halves of ale and 1 half of cider we got through last year. Between us we actually managed to taste over 100 beers in a little over 7 hours. We'll put a few piccies up here but the rest we'll stick on our own webspace (best not go to made on TPR )

Damn it. No beer left!

So, tonight we got an unexpected visit (ok, well, not unexpected) from Derek to kick off our weekend trip to Boston for the Extreme Beer Festival. Of course, we had to bring the BACT-X Captain to a Jersey brewpub (the best in central Jersey...big deal) along with Mark and Amanda. Here are some photos from our visit.

OK, cleared by the doctor to drink again yesterday meant that today was the day to go to DuClaw's and check out the Naked Fish Chocolate Raspberry Stout. AND IT WAS GODLY! Seriously one of the best beers I've ever had. We are already planning another trip there before the month is over to sample more, though I think we'll go to the Fells Point location this time, as the parking at Arundul Mills was insane. I have no idea why that mall is that popular...

Well, we all survived the weekend up in Boston for the Extreme Beer Festival. Plenty of pictures from the event and other activities up there coming in the next couple of days. Up first, the drive to Massachusetts, with a stop at a liquor store up there, and then dinner at a friend's restaurant.

Extreme122.jpg.ef1bde3d1c4a8a5311518bd456a532c5.jpg

Major thanks to Matt for putting up with us on a Friday night. The food, the friends, the atmosphere, and the alcohol all were perfect!

Extreme121.jpg.3284c897cd5fc5569ee7a3417b5c26ca.jpg

and then for a few more hours we hung around and drank more martinis like the warm apple pie martini made with warm apple cider, caramel, cinnamon, and sugar

Extreme120.jpg.c3ac8b150a75f97bbb13a3253da9ddab.jpg

and it was very Belgiany

Extreme118.jpg.4e169c10e8814a3597c0da495e0787c5.jpg

and for dessert, Matt recommended Three Philosophers from Ommegang

Extreme116.jpg.662cc8af53c2c5076668d7f687b11218.jpg

While I had a chicken breast with sweet potatoes with a nice sauce. Great stuff!

Extreme115.jpg.a686834b5e235584daf837fbfee02ef2.jpg

For dinner, Adam and Ellen both got hanger steak

Extreme114.jpg.8f3012f672f0995fd84d5b0bff00f721.jpg

and Ellen went with another martini

Meanwhile Adam and Ellen enjoyed a mound of Yukon Gold nachos

Next up for me, a local beer, the Hibernian from Harpoon

Extreme108.jpg.4ca416bee0531342c96d94e8dbd5bb0d.jpg

Ellen pretty much tried every kind of martini Matt could make

Ah, HopDevil, a nice welcoming

Extreme105.jpg.f45de6d88efe278511b8af138937e2e3.jpg

Extreme104.jpg.322a818ec40b5fcd38a7430f37e2310f.jpg

Good thing we packed lite

Extreme103.jpg.a0c6c23ab9419d42fa3da353302611ce.jpg

and I was excited over the singles, mixed six packs, as well as the stuff they don't distribute in PA, like Pizza Port, Alesmith, and Founders

Extreme102.jpg.0e590c9af67644d667990df5049dfeef.jpg

Ellen was extremely excited over the variety of lambic ales

Extreme101.jpg.cd53302e9e0ae860fe1ad8955fb04a3d.jpg

With some time before dinner, we stopped off at Julio's Liquor, which is like a Wal-mart of alcohol

Saturday was the whole reason for the trip to Boston, home of the 4th Annual Extreme Beer Festival sponsored by Beeradvocate. Lots of well known and local microbreweries show up every year, and always bring the highest alcohol content stuff with them, stuff that you normally cannot find unless you actually go to the brewpubs. This year was no exception and we were all pretty psyched to try as much as possible. We all did really well, getting not only most of what we wanted, but some other stuff too. Some beers were great, some were ok, some were really bad. In all, we sampled over 50 different types of beer all above 7%abv and still managed to do more afterwards!

Extreme234.jpg.d028ccf531dfc039c2743509911b9bc6.jpg

and Heath and I could enjoy some Festina Peche and Red and White

Extreme233.jpg.0e3dcb85e4ebf2706778c5eb339610bc.jpg

Then it was back to Dogfish so Ellen could enjoy some more Sam

Extreme229.jpg.c7bbf5bf23a4d8f2e17d475fc26882ea.jpg

and Heath was equally confused by the 17%

Extreme228.jpg.329995de5b3edc969f8ac8474d2bc237.jpg

The most unwiney barleywine I think I ever had

Extreme227.jpg.acd372ad2f1997f00fe2c9e7a6db808d.jpg

A barleywine and some unknown 17% beer that the brewer didn't even know what style it was!?

Extreme226.jpg.db6ac5f3bedd41715e6cac786381b3f6.jpg

Up next, time to see what Wally is brewing up

Extreme225.jpg.a74e08b2bebc766f56ea0f0f0e86eca1.jpg

Soon thereafter, Heath and I made our way over to Pizza Port. While there was no Hop 15 yet, we did enjoy En Garde and Older Viscosity

Extreme224.jpg.4050832ac0273b1f224d53c695c1e56d.jpg

But one of the worst beers was Blood of 1000 Corpes by The Tap. Cool name, but ick, beet beer tastes like beets!

Extreme222.jpg.19ad431c81e0837f55f5c4907053ada7.jpg

One really hoptastic IPA I found was the Smuttynose Bigger A IPA. Good stuff

Extreme220.jpg.1d5ca904ae3d1314ab8bdcd1c6857a4a.jpg

This ain't a scene, it's a goddam arms race, or just a bunch of drunks craving more

Extreme219.jpg.3342acd7584b66d8b98b9f3f2f02f6ca.jpg

There was food there too to help us not get too drunk. I enjoyed a Belgian waffle (complete with sugar coating) to soak up some alcohol

Extreme217.jpg.a1851b3e12a7094bc9c8f13254594413.jpg

Even Kim won't pass up a shot at some Derek

Extreme216.jpg.6c59d104fd2d07e629dfd20659c7d3b8.jpg

Ellen is super excited to have some Derek in her mouth

Extreme214.jpg.94b09d5aa48af506ad553692c9b686dc.jpg

Heath doesn't waste time in enjoying some Derek either

Extreme212.jpg.039ad25e14efaadcfe1ad394b01bbdb7.jpg

I must say, I taste pretty good!

Extreme268.jpg.a5c0191efb3ce488d8c9e11a8a125559.jpg

Don't believe me, check out the bottle! :D

Extreme211.jpg.c04382eb18f0ac2b2a9df0861aefd77e.jpg

Somewhere down the line I was able to finally enjoy myself, the Newport Storm Cyclone Series: Derek stout

Extreme210.jpg.ee4a8f904ad56be339b0b5f3815c0edc.jpg

Ellen and I finally got to try the Red and White from DFH, a Belgian
