thrillgeek
Love the pics Larry. Even with all the negative stuff in the pics it still makes me even more excited to go to Vegas for the first time! Also has there ever been an official TPR event in Vegas? If not there should be! That would be so much fun.

ernierocker
The north part of the strip is okay until you go north of the Sahara. Between Sahara and Stratosphere is where it gets a little interesting. Nice TR Larry!
Sir Clinksalot
Great stuff Larry. I'll 3rd (or is it 10th) that I'm glad you made it okay on your walk. We stupidly stayed at the Stratosphere once, not anything I plan on doing again. Eric, as for "Walking the Strip", honestly, it's okay from The Sahara to Mandalay Bay, a walk I've done a few times. As was said, once you get north of The Sahara, you may not want to do that walk at night. Also, going to get your marriage license at 10pm is also rather "interesting". I do have to say that I like what they have done with Fremont Street in the past 10-15 years, it's no longer too scary at night and the light show is cool. But stay on the street. ginzo
Looks like a fun weekend. I still need to make it out to Vegas. I'm not a gambler, but it looks like a great place to visit.
Jew
^The beauty of Vegas is that there really is something for everyone. Food, shows, art galleries, clubs, strip clubs, gambling, architecture, guns (there's a shooting range right off the strip that lets you shoot automatic weapons), and even a zip line through the desert. thrillgeek
Ok so my parents have officially booked the Mandalay Bay Hotel for my B-day. I'm just curious to know if anyone from here has any positives and or negatives to share about this hotel. Thanks for any reviews.

ebl
To Gregg: I'd still walk the Strip from the Sahara all the way down to Mandalay Bay. It's the part between downtown and the start of the Strip that concerns me. Eric
SharkTums
^^^One of my favorite restaurants Trattoria del Lupo is there! My brother also says that's his favorite buffet on the strip.
nay
Ok so my parents have officially booked the Mandalay Bay Hotel for my B-day. I'm just curious to know if anyone from here has any positives and or negatives to share about this hotel. Thanks for any reviews. I love Mandalay Bay. Definitely the best pool out of the hotels I've been to in Vegas. Some might not like the location, with it being further south on the strip, but you can take the monorail from there to Luxor and Excalibur. Amazing pool at MB, with a beach, wave pool, and lazy river.
thrillgeek
Thanks for the reviews guys! Awesome pools+buffet= Epic win for me. So excited!
Jew
Great hotel, bad location. I love the casino there. The pool area also has a lazy river, in addition to the wave pool/beach area. The tram to Excalibur doesn't run 24/7 like it used to anymore, so expect lots of walking if you go anywhere else on the strip at night.
SharkTums
^At least you can walk in a nice safe climate controlled environment from Mandalay Bay - Luxor - Excalibur so it's not terrible. Trust me, I've done the 'eaten way too much italian food' walk from Mandalay Bay back to Monte Carlo plenty of times!
BeemerBoy
Mandalay Bay? Two words: Red Square!
Sir Clinksalot
Elissa, we finally ate at Lupo last time we were in Vegas (AMAZING) and did that walk, but all the way to the Flamingo. In hindsight we should have taken a cab but "Somebody" wanted to see the Bellagio solarium (is that what they call it). Well, "technically" we only had to walk to Monte Carlo, monorail to Bellagio and then walk to Flamingo. But that was bad enough.
Jew
^^My favorite bar @ Mandalay is Mix at the top of THE Hotel. Amazing view of the strip! Rum Jungle is a fun club w/ no cover. They also have an ice bar as well...$30 bucks to get in. Burger Bar has awesome burgers and good beer on tap! ^At least you can walk in a nice safe climate controlled environment from Mandalay Bay - Luxor - Excalibur so it's not terrible. Trust me, I've done the 'eaten way too much italian food' walk from Mandalay Bay back to Monte Carlo plenty of times! That walk isn't nearly as fun when you're drunk
ernierocker
Another positive about staying in Mandalay Bay is that you can walk all the way to Excalibur without actually going outside. This is especially useful in the summer months.
Jew
Time for another update of this thread! Thanks to the economy, City Center has a chance of being the only new hotel rooms in Vegas for this decade. What you may have not known is that if the economy didn't tank, which meant people with no business getting loans could no longer buy ridiculously over priced hotel rooms marketed as "condos", there would have been another 10,000+ rooms on the strip! So for this update I included a construction photo of each (none of these are current), the concept art, and their current status. First up is the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas. Located right next to City Center, the plan was to be a 3,000 room hotel/condo property w/ all the vegas amenities...casino, shopping, convention space, night club, theater, and a rooftop "beach club." Here's a picture of the two towers under construction from March of last year. Currently the property is owned by Deutsche Bank, who inherited the property after the developer defaulted on the loan. The exterior has been completed, and work is slowly continuing on the interior. All reports suggest Deutsche Bank intends to open the property sometime this year, but that has not been confirmed. Next up we have a new tower at Ceasars Place. This one is to be called the Octavius Tower and feature 665 rooms+71 suites. Harrah's announced in 2009 that the project would not continue until demand for rooms in Vegas picked up. It's the smaller looking tower in this photo Here's a photo from March 2009 of the tower under construction. Currently the exterior shell is completed, and 4 high roller "villas" (imagine the suite from The Hangover) are in service. The rest of the interior remains unfinished. Moving across the street, we find the St. Regis Residences as part of the Venetian/Palazzo property. It was to be 50 stories tall and feature 398 condos. I don't believe it was ever announced that this would be a hotel/condo tower. Although this photo was taken in March of 2009, this is how it currently looks. Construction was frozen at the end of 2008, and has not resumed. No word on when construction will resume. Moving further down the strip, we have the development that was to replace The Stardust Hotel. Echelon Place was to feature four different hotels for a total for 5,300 rooms. Also to be included was 650,000sqft of convention space, 140,000sqft casino, two theaters (4,000 seats & 1,500 seats), and a 300,000sqft shopping center. Although taken in 2009, this is how the project currently looks. Boyd Gaming stopped construction in 2008, and currently has announced construction should resume sometime in the 2011-2013 range. You can check out the site @ http://www.echelonresorts.com/ And last but not least, Fountainebleau Las Vegas. A 3,889 hotel/condo tower, which was to include all the other Vegas stuff too. Construction stopped in June of 2009, as the owner declared bankruptcy. Carl Icahn bought the property for $150 million. It has been reported that the resort was approx. 70% complete. No future plans have been announced.

ParkTrips
Amazing deal on the foreclosure at $150M, I wouldn't be surprised if the land alone didn't cost that
Jew
^Granted this was during the time everyone was going crazy for real estate (2007), but the last big land sale in Vegas was The Frontier. When Phil Ruffin (current owner of Treasure Island) sold it, it went for $33 million/acre.
AllenA07
Was any work ever started on the Plaza. I believe that was set to replace the Frontier. I've had been following all of these projects up until the markets all went south, I figure I'll start watching again when construction starts back up. Kieran
Hey guys any opinions on Caesers Palace? I was keen for the Aria but the reviews the place is getting are horrible. I'm keen for the true 'Vegas' experience and that seems to be what Caeser's offers.(Huge property etc) Any opinions on the hotel guys?
