Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk (SCBB) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

^I didn't know the Golden Ticket Awards were this weekend. Interesting its the same weekend as WCB.

Why is it interesting that it's the same weekend as WCB? The two things have absolutely nothing to do with each other. We weren't even aware of the Golden Ticket date when we set the date for WCB.

Not to mention the date for the Golden Tickets was set like a year and a half ago. It's not like there is competition here or anything. Just a coincidence.

In regard to Undertow, I think the goal was to have it open by Golden Tickets weekend, but I"m not sure what is going on with it.

Found this on their itinerary:

Take a spin on the Boardwalk’s newest ride – a Maurer Söhne spinning coaster named Undertow. Other rides open exclusively for Golden Ticket guests include two National Historic Landmarks: The 1911 Looff Carousel and 1924 Giant Dipper as well as the Haunted Castle and some classic Boardwalk games. Appetizers, beer, wine, and soft drinks will be served.

Could it be? I do realize that the GTA and rides are not open to the public (this event is being held Friday) and is a private event. But still...could this mean that opening is just on the horizon?

With the 2013 GTA now over, I still haven't found out anything hinting towards Undertow opening other than it having possibly opened exclusively for those attending the 2013 GTA. Anybody have any updates on the ride as of now?

^ I have no idea, I'm visiting the park this Sunday on a larger NorCal trip, I thought for sure it would be safely open by now, but after so much delay I have little hope... Good thing SLO is only 2.5 hours from Santa Cruz, a quick trip up there sometime during the off season is not too big of a worry! Plus, the more reason to go to the Boardwalk, the better!

^Was that just a wild rumor, or did it actually happen and no one's talking about it? Is it possible the riders signed an NDA? I think they had people do that for the new ride announcement that was a day earlier than the official one. Maybe they felt it just isn't complete or polished enough to properly introduce to the public?

Why would they open it just for the GTAs and then not to the public?

It never opened for the Golden Ticket Awards. I'm hoping they can at least open the ride this year, who cares if it's just limited operation at least it will be running for the public.

I'm still crossing my fingers and hoping Undertow opens either this weekend (would take a lot of tension away) or on the 21st when I'm going, as unlikely as it may seem right now. I'm still betting that there won't actually be an announcement confirming the opening date in advance, and the ride will open spontaneously like Gold Striker (what's up with Norcal, is it cursed or something?).

^That's what I'm kind of feeling.

At this point, I'm keeping the mentality of the fact that it will open when it opens. And when it does open, it will be running for a long time If we keep mentally setting up dates if when it will or could open, we will only disappoint ourselves. UT or not, I'm still looking forward to visiting the 'Walk next weekend...gotta reunite with my favorite flat rides!

^That's pretty poor planning on their part then. I've worked on my fair share of ride openings in California, and there really isn't a lot of surprises---everything is scheduled in advance, which gives plenty of time for the park to do its training to get everyone ready.

I'm guessing they couldn't submit for the permit until they had the part installed that they were waiting for from Maurer and started cycling the trains. Had that not been necessary they likely would have had the permit long ago. I do remember seeing not too long ago the park side that the permit was the last thing they were waiting on.

I have totally forgotten about this coaster. I guess the hype over Gold Striker made me forget about Undertow. Probably doesn't matter to much when it will open now the Summer season is over.

I've been wanting to head back to CGA for another couple laps on Gold Striker (which is really growing on me as one of my favorite coasters) but want to hit CGA and SCBB in the same day once Undertow happens. Starting to wonder if it will open this year at all.

Well, tomorrow I'll see SCBB's concrete deck ornament for the first time...Bummed that it won't be running but at least there's an awesome collection of flat rides to hit up before they go into limited op mode.

I'm assuming that when UT does open, it will be part of limited operation mode as there would be no need to go into offseason rehab as soon as it opens.

Well, at least it still has a shot at opening before Flying Turns.

The whole reason that the ride has not gotten approval is not because of the state. It really has nothing to do with the scheduling or anything like that. The schedule got screwed up because the track was poorly manufactured by Maurer Sohne, and they had to actually get local contractors to literally alter the track in order to make the pieces to fit together. This is straight from the mouth of Wolfgang of Maurer Sohne. So, the entire project was screwed from the beginning since it was a manufacturing problem.
