Coney Island (Luna Park / Deno's) Development Discussion Thread

P. 60: Phoenix coaster announced for Phoenix at Deno’s Wonder Wheel

Recommended Posts

  • 2 weeks later...

I was at the park today for the first time ever and saw them lifting the supports in place as well. It was a pretty cool area considering I've never been to Coney Island the 7 times I've been to NYC. Rode my first volare (would be great without the inversions), SteepleChase was a lot of fun the launch seemed extremely intense, Air Race was great, and the Cyclone was way better than I expected it to be!

All of them employees seemed really happy and had some very personable conversations with my group while we were in line. I had a great experience and hope to go back in a year or two to ride the new Thunderbolt and whatever else we are surprised with!

They were busy setting up forms for more footers and assembling the tower for the Thunderbolts lift hill and first drop today. Here are some pictures of the tower.

Thanks for the update, with NYC schools on Spring Break I haven't stop by in 10 days. I'll be stopping the park for progress updates once a week starting later this week.

What is the status on the independently operated rides? Like the El Dorado bumper cars, and all the other rides not in Deno's or Luna? I know they were trying to get a lot of them out. I always appreciated those rides, even if the cost was steep.

^Where were you when I was trying in vain to get people to ride the El Dorado Skooters with me?! Anyway, I'd love to know, too. I try to keep an eye out for those outfits, but they're hard to keep track of since they lack a web presence. Last I heard, El Dorado was able to bounce back from both the oustings and the hurricane, despite multiple strong rumors of its permanent closure. I think 12th St. Amusements was still alive, too. But I always wonder...

They are all still there.

I took a couple of quick pictures today on the way home. A few things to note.

Police barricades are set up along the road/sidewalk directly east of the Thunderbolt (West 15th Street) to discourage and prevent people from getting to close to where the current footers are laid and vertical work is occuring.

Footers look to be pour along the whole out section (east side) of the coaster.

Pictures taken through an open gate on Surf Avenue looking towards the ocean. The furthest possible vantage point of the heavy work going on.

The fences are covered with a translucent green tarp that one can see through but it doesn't produce good pictures. A huge gust of wind lifedt up the tarp so I could take this picture from the alley between the Thunderbolt site and the Brooklyn Cyclones baseball stadium.

Near the boardwalk is the one place up close to take an unobstructed shot without the fence or tarp in the way.

While hard to see, this road is barricaded to prevent pedestrian and car traffic.

^ Last Time I Checked, that's how Roller Coasters were Assembled. lol j/k

Well, I said

Kind of strange to see all the lift and drop structure done without track.

So I specifically meant that the entire structure seems finished but with no track. I'm not saying that never happens but just that most of the constructions I've followed didn't have that.

But, yeah, I get it

I stopped by Coney Island today on the way home, to see the progress of Thunderbolt. I think the park reads TPR and heeded the suggestion to put some track on the lift hill. I applaud this decision.

OMG! What are they doing?

Yes, they added track to the lift hill. I hope they do the same on the other side to create a drop. Please listen to me Luna Park, please.

It's hard to see but track from the brake run to the lift hill is in place.

From this afternoon.

Unable to stand on "The Bench" and stick my camera over the fence due to this vertical construction.

The park must read this site, because they took my advice installing track on the other side of the lift hill. The power of TPR.

It seems to me like they waited an awfully long time to actually start doing track work if they want the ride open by Memorial Day! I'm excited for this one, but I fully expect a delayed opening. There's just no way.

Normally I would agree, but they turned a pile of dirt into Luna Park in 31 days.
