I Like Theme Parks. Posted August 21, 2016 Share Posted August 21, 2016 I went to the park for the first time today, and while we had fun, the park isn't very well-run at all. The operations were pretty bad, and the staff wasn't that good. I was there for an ACE event, and there was supposed to be a half hour of ERT on The Cyclone, but it was closed the entire time we were there, and apparently it was broken the past few days, too. So they had everyone walk across to Thunderbolt, but it turned out that it was 15 minutes. But it took too long, so the ERT was basically riding Thunderbolt when the park was open, and they just had the GP wait outside for 10 or so minutes. I appreciate that they tried to fix things, but it was very poorly handled. But a good thing is that Coney Island has a really cool atmosphere, and Luna Park has the perfect feel of a boardwalk park. Except there really needs to be more people cleaning the park. It's hard to do that with a boardwalk park, but it was a bit ridiculous some of the empty cups and garbage that wasn't cleaned up. I had Nathan's earlier in the day, but the only food I had in the park was the lunch we were given for the event, which wasn't good at all. But there's a really good selection of flat rides, so here's the rides I rode: Thunderbolt x 3 - This is a really nice little coaster! There's amazing hang-time on the inversions, and the airtime hills at the end are great. It's a perfect fit for the park. Endeavor - This is a great addition, and I'm glad that these are catching on. It's really forceful. I still like the original enterprises, but this is a good flat ride. Soaring Eagle - This is one of the worst coasters I've ridden. That was to be expected, but I've never been on one of these before. Steeplechase x 2 - I sat in the front and back rows. This is a really enjoyable ride! The launch feels faster than it is, the first turn is pretty forceful and has some strong laterals, and the rest of the coaster is tame, but fun. This is one of the best coasters here. Power Surge - Not as intense as the one at Ocean City MD, but almost just as fun. I love these things. After that, we stopped at Deno's Wonder Wheel park. It's really small, and feels more like an old historic section. We didn't ride much, but it was nice. Wonder Wheel - This is the best ferris wheel ever! It was really fun, and there's really nice views. It's also amazing to look at, and really has a vintage feel. Spook-O-Rama - This was a nice dark ride. There were a lot of effects, and it was a nice old-school dark ride. It's really weird and dumb, but it's just so much fun! So back to Luna Park: Circus Coaster - I got the back row. It's good for a kiddie coaster. Electro Spin x 2 - It's a nice Disk-O. Air Race x 2 - These are amazing! I think I like the smaller one at Casino Pier better, though. Because that one does 18 flips every time, while this one always does shorter cycles. Brooklyn Flyer - This is a smaller star-flyer type ride, but it's just as good as the tall ones in my opinion because the chairs twist a lot and it bounces a lot when it goes up and down, which gives a similar sensation to snapping flyers. The Tickler - It spins really well. Luna 360 - This is an awesome ride. It's forceful and the hang-time is great. WindStarz - Nice family ride. I was able to get it swinging a lot, and it was entertaining. Coney Island Sound - Okay ride with a little bit of airtime. So while there were some really good rides like Thunderbolt, Endeavor, Steeplechase, Power Surge, Electro Spin, Air Race, Brooklyn Flyer and Luna 360, I'm not in a hurry to get back to the park aside from Cyclone. So I'll probably visit Adventureland this fall, and make a quick stop at Luna Park just for the Cyclone. So while the park has a lot of potential, it still has a lot of work to be done. That ride has really grown on me, I hated it during its first season but the last few times I've ridden it the coaster gave a really forceful, memorable ride. Steeplechase is a nice little ride in its own right as well. Sucks that Cyclone was closed because of course without having to explain why, it is the star of Coney Island. coasterbill Posted August 22, 2016 Share Posted August 22, 2016 We went down to Coney Island for the first time in over 10 years last week for National Roller Coaster Day and I was really impressed. I have a full trip report coming but when I was there ten years ago I hated everything about the place. The Cyclone was running terribly, everything was run down and sh*tty and I couldn't wait to leave. Going there now you wouldn't believe it was the same place. Thunderbolt is a ton of fun, the atmosphere is awesome, Cyclone was running amazing and the smaller coasters are all fun too (well... except the volare). They had a great flat selection too that we didn't have time for but shockingly we'll probably be back. I'm blown away by the Coney Island transformation. Oh, and Wonder Wheel is still awesome. The Cyclone feels like new again, while still retaining it's out of control feeling, and the other additions are all solid, especially Steeplechase and Thunderbolt. Two new mini-golf courses have popped up this summer, including the bells and whistles pirate golf course Shipwrecked in Red Hook, and now Brooklyn Miniature Golf, a simpler, no-frills 18 hole course that has opened in Coney Island. The course, which is located on Bowery Street and West 12th Street, opened up just over a week ago according to an employee there. While Brooklyn Miniature Golf lacks the flair (and air conditioning) of Red Hook's new course, it makes up for it with the atmosphere, surrounded by the Wonder Wheel, a variety of Luna Park rides, and skee-ball wonderland/Fsociety HQ Eldorado Arcade. The holes themselves are deceptively hard—or at least they were for me. They're laid out simply, but a few obstacles placed in key spots along the way will have you chewing on your putter in frustration as you continuously tell yourself, "Okay I've got a hole in one on this one, easy," and wind up with a 3 or 4. And the holes themselves seem to be curved just enough on the edges so that every time you think you've sunk a putt, the ball will rim right out. At the same time, it could just be that I need to put more time in with Lee Carvallo's Putting Challenge if I want to get better at this. There are also two holes with water traps: one with a small narrow bridge over a river, and the other with a downward-sloping green that will deposit the balls of the careless putters among you right into a small pond. The course was still too new for the pond to have transformed into a golf ball graveyard, but the designers are aware that the slope will claim a number of balls soon enough, and have helpfully left a net out for you right next to the pond so you can fish your ball out. In another nice touch, every hole holds a flag you can pull out after being the first to finish, just like a real golfer (that's what they do, right?). Brooklyn Miniature Golf opens at noon every day, and currently has no set closing time according to the employee I spoke to. A game will run you $10, for children or adults, and I was told that in "about two weeks" construction on a concession stand next to the course will be finished. There's also a go-kart track right next to the mini-golf, which will run you $15 a session, if you think there are already not enough opportunities to drive fast with no consequences in this city. This is the main reason I don't go, hate driving to Brooklyn and I find it is too expensive for what it is, I'd rather just go to great adventure. I'll get on the cyclone eventually. Those are made for parks like Luna Park. However, since it's owned/run by Zamperla (not sure of the exact arrangements, but it doesn't matter for the point), Id they got a drop tower, it would be a Zamperla model, and those suck.
