Today's update is for part one of my home park's brochure collection, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. I've always loved Busch Gardens, it has something for everyone: Thrilling rides, great shows and is one of the top zoos in the country. In this update we look back to the years 1979-1985. I think you will see a lot has changed at the park. Back in '80, the big new coaster was the thrilling Scorpion single looper. The Scorpion will always hold a special place in my heart as being my first upside down coaster when I was 8. You'll notice lots of past attractions that are no longer with us: The African Queen Boat ride (where the Tidal Wave now stands), The Python corkscrew coaster, The Swinging Vines and Monstrous Mama in Congo, The Crazy Camel in Timbuktu and the Monorail over the Serengeti. Homer Posted November 25, 2009 Share Posted November 25, 2009 Awesome.. I lived a few miles away from where Boardwalk and Baseball once stood a few years ago and didn't even know it! It was just an empty plot of land now. Kinda sad! It doesnt look all that bad! Now the plot of land has been developed and a Super Target, Best Buy, etc. are now located on it. New additions include the Moroccan Palace Theater in 1986. In 1987, Busch Gardens became home to the rare Chinese Pandas Ling Ling and Yong Yong on loan from the Beijing Zoo. To celebrate the park's 30th anniversary, The Tanganyika Tidal Wave & The reopening of the Swiss House restaurant renamed the Crown Colony House in 1989. doom1001 Posted November 25, 2009 Share Posted November 25, 2009 I remember going to Tampa around 1991 for a baseball tournament with my team and visiting Busch Gardens.This was before any of the big coasters showed up and before my addiction to theme parks began.I remember the Questor simulator and riding Congo River Rapids about 6 times in a row without getting off as there were no lines as it was a 55 degree overcast day,getting off totally soaked and nearly catching pneumonia a few days later,good times!!I think I have one of those early 90's Busch Gardens brochures somewhere from that visit. Â I miss Questor - it rocked! A similar thing happened to my friends and I, for my 16th birthday in March 1991, we were at the park during a cold front (high 40's). We might I been in the park same time period as you. We were all stupid kids and rode the Tidal Wave and Congo River Rapids. Surprise surprise, we were all super sick the next week! In 2001, Busch Gardens began to produce large brochures with multi-pages like Disney and Universal. New for 2001 was Rhino Rally off-road-river attraction. This was also the year that Busch stopped making Adventure Island brochures and started to include the water park as a larger presence in the BGT brochure. Onto 2001's brochure! In 2003 the park transformed it's once outdoor dolphin show theater into a climate controlled indoor 4D theater. The opening 3-D film was R.L. Stine's Haunted Lighthouse 4-D which later changed to the present film Pirates 4-D. It doesnt look all that bad! Â I REALLY liked B&B when I went in the 80's. I had always thought it would be cool to have a retro park like that just featuring a couple classic wood coasters (maybe a steel or two), and about every imaginable flat invented from the 30's through the 80's. As long as the park included my favorite ride as a kid, The Bubble Bounce! Â Another update: Below is Busch's 2006 brochure. The major addition for '06 was Sheikra, the country's first dive coaster. Sheikra changed the park's skyline in a good way! Also this was the year that Busch Gardens Tampa Bay was re-branded Busch Gardens Africa for a couple of seasons. Onto '06's brochure. Enjoy! Today's update is for Circus World, a theme park that operated from the mid 70's until 1985 here in Central Florida, (this was the park that later became Boardwalk and Baseball). Circus World began with mainly circus type shows, exhibits and had a couple of amusement rides including the large Florida Hurricane wooden coaster. An Enterprise, Calypso, Round Up, Bumper Cars, giant ferris wheel and a Shuttle Loop Coaster rounded out the ride collection. During the last year of operation (1985), the park greatly expanded it's collection of rides. Additions included a Parachute Drop, Octopus, A Swiss Bobb, Himalaya, Flying Bobs, Wave Swinger, 1001 Nights/Falling Rainbow type ride, a swinging pirate ship, a looping boat ride, and another shuttle loop coaster. I visited Circus World a couple of times as a child. My main memories of Circus World was getting my face painted as a clown, the miniature circus exhibit and riding the Flying Daredevil shuttle loop coaster and not feeling like my OTSH was very secure. I guess just like Boardwalk and Baseball, Circus World just couldn't compete with the world class Disney theme parks down the street. So lets take a look back at a few Circus World memories. Enjoy!
