Calling All Coaster Enthusiasts!

Recommended Posts

I am doing a paper in one of my classes on roller coaster enthusiasts and I was hoping Theme Park Review could pull through and help me with this project by filling out this questionnaire. I will use the responses at quotes in my paper to help fulfill the research needed.

So if you could copy and paste the below questions and respond to them that would be great!

I would really appreciate you time. Please answer the questions as complete as possible. Once again thank you very much for your help!

What is your roller coaster count? 171

What is your home park? Six Flags America

What is the nearest big city? Washington DC

What is your occupation? Web Designer

About how many times a year do you visit a park (including your home park)? 20 or so

About how many times a year do you travel to a park that is not your home park? 5 or so

When you travel do you go primarily to amusement parks or do you also try and hit other sites? depends on the nature of the vacation. I'll go on trips that are exclusively roller coaster/theme park trips, and other times I'll go on longer trips that will have a park or two tossed in but are more about other activities or site-seeing.

What is the farthest you’ve traveled to go to an amusement park? Hong Kong

Does roller coaster time get in the way of family time? (Do you choose to miss your children’s or family’s sporting events, holidays, birthdays, etc…)

No, I'll plan trips around other big events and only go to my local parks when I have free time.

Do you have any other major hobbies? Sports and web design.

Do you get feelings of sadness in the offseason? Do you even have an offseason? Do you travel during the offseason? Definitely. Although I will occasionally travel t the south for rides in the winter.

Do you consider yourself friends with someone you met who works at an amusement park? (Or reverse it, if you work or worked and an amusement park have you made friends with enthusiasts?) I still keep up with a couple people from working at a park, but we aren't close friends and I'm not close friends with any other enthusiasts.

Would it bother you to go to an amusement park by yourself? Not at all, I go to parks alone sometimes. I prefer to go with others, but I can easily spend time at my local parks alone if I decide to swing by afterwork or something.

Have you gone to an amusement park by yourself? I normally go to Six Flags America alone, due to its close proximity if I have nothing else to do I can drive up there and spend a couple hours on the rides. In the past when I was younger I would hang out with other enthusiasts occasionally if I saw any.

Do you find it easy to make friends with other enthusiasts? I never really made an effort to become close friends with another enthusiast outside of conversation at parks.

How do you get your coaster news?

Screamscape, TPR mostly

How many different forum sites do you regularly post on? Four total, two about coasters.

If there was a poll that asked a large pool of enthusiasts what their favorite roller coaster is, what do you think would be the top 3 responses be for wood? And for steel? Wood - El Toro, Voyage, Phoenix. Steel - Bizarro (SFNE), X, Millennium Force

(MF in particular isn't that popular on this site at the moment, but a lot of enthusiast seem to still love it elsewhere.)

Same scenario but for amusement parks, what would be the top 3?

Cedar Point, Knoebels, Kennywood

(Same thing for CP as MF above)

Have you ever “stole a kid” to get a credit on a kiddie coaster?

I tried, I waited by the entrance of Pteranodon Flyers at IOA for a while, but I got tired of waiting for someone who would agree.

Do you cut other categories out of your budget to make trips to parks? I'll buy cheaper items (beer, food, etc.) sometimes to make ends meet easier.

Before you visit a new park do you research the park finding the best way to navigate the park, get the best deals, or what days to go? Yes, I always look at maps beforehand and will occasionally ask the park's locals what is the best order to navigate the park to get the most out of a day.

Do you feel the roller coaster enthusiast community is a warm and accepting community, or a negative and discouraging community? Mostly friendly. Any time I see someone with a coaster shirt at a park (from a different park) on I'll ask them about it and strike up a nice little conversation.

Do you like to talk about your hobby with people who are not roller coaster enthusiasts? Not really.

What is your home park?

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, Magic Mountain, Disneyland, Knotts

What is the nearest big city?

San Francisco

What is your occupation?

Full-Time Ride Operations Supervisor at Discovery Kingdom

About how many times a year do you visit a park (including your home park)?

Maybe 2 or 3 times a year. Disney once a month or so. Discovery Kingdom I visit maybe 300 days plus.

About how many times a year do you travel to a park that is not your home park?

Maybe 15 - 20 separate visits.

When you travel do you go primarily to amusement parks or do you also try and hit other sites?

Primarily for amusement parks

What is the farthest you’ve traveled to go to an amusement park?

On deployment in 2007 I was in several sites in Japan, Hong Kong and a few various other places.

Does roller coaster time get in the way of family time? (Do you choose to miss your children’s or family’s sporting events, holidays, birthdays, etc…)

No it does not.

Do you have any other major hobbies?

Working at the Kingdom

Do you get feelings of sadness in the offseason? Do you even have an offseason? Do you travel during the offseason?

Many parks are open year around near my location. I only get the "offseason blues" when we (Discovery Kingdom) close in the winter for a few short months.

Do you consider yourself friends with someone you met who works at an amusement park? (Or reverse it, if you work or worked and an amusement park have you made friends with enthusiasts?)

Sure.

Would it bother you to go to an amusement park by yourself?

It depends. In my travels abroad I visited many sites with nothing but my iPod which was fine. But here at home I’d rather take a buddy, the experience is better that way.

Have you gone to an amusement park by yourself? If so have you ever ran into another enthusiast and tagged along with them?

No.

Do you find it easy to make friends with other enthusiasts?

I don’t have to much experience in this department. I've gotten into conversations with people I may see wearing Coaster Enthusiast apparel, but that’s about it.

How do you get your coaster news?

I get several publications delivered to the office, and sometimes we found out what you find out at places like screamscape or newsplusnotes.

How many different forum sites do you regularly post on?

TPR!

Have you ever “stole a kid” to get a credit on a kiddie coaster?

No, it’s called a test ride haha.

Do you cut other categories out of your budget to make trips to parks? (Entertainment, fast food, holidays, tobacco or alcohol, etc…)

At times.

Before you visit a new park do you research the park finding the best way to navigate the park, get the best deals, or what days to go?

I may find the best deals, but once I’m in park I like to just take an adventure. Sometimes I ask people what the "don't miss it" type attraction, other than that I like to wing it.

Do you feel the roller coaster enthusiast community is a warm and accepting community, or a negative and discouraging community?

Accepting.

Do you like to talk about your hobby with people who are not roller coaster enthusiasts?

Yes.

What is your home park? Drayton Manor Park - and that's about an hour away.

What is the nearest big city? Birmingham (Coventry is a small city..)

What is your occupation? Unemployed (Student on gap year)

About how many times a year do you visit a park (including your home park)? On average, 4-5; this year, many more than that.

About how many times a year do you travel to a park that is not your home park? 3-4 (again, on average)

When you travel do you go primarily to amusement parks or do you also try and hit other sites? Theme parks and (live) theatres/concerts are my two major types of destinations.

What is the farthest you’ve traveled to go to an amusement park? All the way to California.

Does roller coaster time get in the way of family time? (Do you choose to miss your children’s or family’s sporting events, holidays, birthdays, etc…) No.

Do you have any other major hobbies? Theatre, music, other creative pursuits (writing, etc).

Do you get feelings of sadness in the offseason? Do you even have an offseason? Do you travel during the offseason? Yep, but if I'm lucky (as I was last year, and will be this year), I will travel internationally for a park that doesn't have an off-season; and the major parks here (Alton Towers, for example) have specisl open weeks in February/March.

Do you consider yourself friends with someone you met who works at an amusement park? (Or reverse it, if you work or worked and an amusement park have you made friends with enthusiasts?) Not really.

Would it bother you to go to an amusement park by yourself? 99% of the time I go by myself. It helps when getting in Single Rider lines, being able to do what I want when I want - and I don't have many friends who'd go with me.

Have you gone to an amusement park by yourself? If so have you ever ran into another enthusiast and tagged along with them? A: see above. B: Nope, but that may hopefully change.

Do you find it easy to make friends with other enthusiasts? Generally, particularly on TPR trips, when the overriding general interest is the same.

How do you get your coaster news? Theme Park Review, Disney podcasts.

How many different forum sites do you regularly post on? Only TPR.

If there was a poll that asked a large pool of enthusiasts what their favorite roller coaster is, what do you think would be the top 3 responses be for wood? And for steel? I'm honestly not sure.

Same scenario but for amusement parks, what would be the top 3? As above.

Have you ever “stole a kid” to get a credit on a kiddie coaster? Nope.

Do you cut other categories out of your budget to make trips to parks? (Entertainment, fast food, holidays, tobacco or alcohol, etc…) Somewhat; I'm less inclined to eat, put it that way, if I'm in a park - depending on crowd sizes; and I don't smoke or drink.

Before you visit a new park do you research the park finding the best way to navigate the park, get the best deals, or what days to go? Yes.

Do you feel the roller coaster enthusiast community is a warm and accepting community, or a negative and discouraging community? Definitely warm and accepting in the majority, although I definitely think it's based on age/'maturity' and experience.

Do you like to talk about your hobby with people who are not roller coaster enthusiasts? I do, but they don't ;]

When you travel do you go primarily to amusement parks or do you also try and hit other sites? Lately yes, but I like taking in more of where I'm visiting than just the amusement parks.

What is the farthest you’ve traveled to go to an amusement park? 540 miles. I've been to Europe and gone to parks there, but going to theme parks was not my primary objective in going.

Does roller coaster time get in the way of family time? (Do you choose to miss your children’s or family’s sporting events, holidays, birthdays, etc…) Never.

Same scenario but for amusement parks, what would be the top 3? Tokyo Disnea Sea, Knoebels, Holiday World.

Have you ever “stole a kid” to get a credit on a kiddie coaster? No, but I have thought about it.

Do you cut other categories out of your budget to make trips to parks? (Entertainment, fast food, holidays, tobacco or alcohol, etc…) No, but I live a very spartan lifestyle so I would be hard pressed to find something to cut. My traveling to parks is not frequent or far enough to need planning.

Before you visit a new park do you research the park finding the best way to navigate the park, get the best deals, or what days to go? To some extent yes, but I just generally look at the park map and guess which rides are most popular to make sure I hit those first.

Do you feel the roller coaster enthusiast community is a warm and accepting community, or a negative and discouraging community? Generally warm and acceping, but as with any community there are always those few people who want to stir the pot.

What is your home park? Six Flags America though I go to King's Dominion more often even though it's not as close as SFA. I live 5 miles from SFA.

What is the nearest big city?

Washington, D.C.

What is your occupation?

Professional Baseball Umpire. Out of season as a consultant with multiple hotel management companies.

About how many times a year do you visit a park (including your home park)? 20

About how many times a year do you travel to a park that is not your home park? 17

When you travel do you go primarily to amusement parks or do you also try and hit other sites? Primarily amusement parks but will make side trips such as to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when hitting Cedar Point (flying in and out of Cleveland's airport).

What is the farthest you’ve traveled to go to an amusement park?

Vegas. Living on the east coast, I haven't made it to Cali yet.

Does roller coaster time get in the way of family time? (Do you choose to miss your children’s or family’s sporting events, holidays, birthdays, etc…)

No. I have a partner that shares the hobby and we don't have kids or anything. My immediate family often tags along on my roller coaster journeys.

Do you have any other major hobbies?

Baseball, of course! Die hard Baltimore Ravens fan too!

Do you get feelings of sadness in the offseason? Do you even have an offseason? Do you travel during the offseason?

Not usually. If I've had a great season of traveling, I can make it through the off season without coaster depression. This season will be rough as I didn't nearly travel as much as I have in the past. Not as many games this year due to the rain and with the economy scare in the media...

Do you consider yourself friends with someone you met who works at an amusement park? (Or reverse it, if you work or worked and an amusement park have you made friends with enthusiasts?)

Yes. I have many friends and acquiantences who work at parks or engineering firms.

Would it bother you to go to an amusement park by yourself?

No. Do it all the time. Usually travel distances alone too. Did King's Island/Holiday World/SFKK/Stricker's Grove alone last fall.

Have you gone to an amusement park by yourself? If so have you ever ran into another enthusiast and tagged along with them?

Of course!

Do you find it easy to make friends with other enthusiasts?

Usually yes. The community is so diverse and sometimes I choose not to befriend someone for reasons such as politics, personal beliefs, bad reputations, etc.

I'd rather watch the drama from a distance and not be in the middle of it!

How do you get your coaster news?

Screamscape, NewsPlusNotee, URC, TPR...in no particular order.

How many different forum sites do you regularly post on?

Three coaster related. All different screen names too!

Two for baseball; one for baseball fans, the other for umpires.

If there was a poll that asked a large pool of enthusiasts what their favorite roller coaster is, what do you think would be the top 3 responses be for wood? And for steel?

Everybody has an opinion and I just worry about my own.

Same scenario but for amusement parks, what would be the top 3?

Based off of the fanboys on the various amusement parks sites, I'd have to say Cedar Point, Six Flags Magic Mountain, and .... drawing a blank.

My personal three would be Great Adventure, Islands of Adventure, King's Dominion (yes, over Cedar Point).

Have you ever “stole a kid” to get a credit on a kiddie coaster?

No. The who idea of "borrowing" a stranger's kid for the sole purpose is border line pedo for me. It's just creepy when you think about it. If you borrow a friend's kid, that's ok, but a complete stranger? Weird.

Do you cut other categories out of your budget to make trips to parks? (Entertainment, fast food, holidays, tobacco or alcohol, etc…)

With my hotel connections, I travel cheaply. I often get discounted hotel rooms for around $25 a night for the Choice Brands, $39 for Marriott. If I fly to a park, I'll fly Southwest on a web only discount and book an $8.95 rental from Hotwire weeks out. I don't mind taking the chance that I'll have to cancel a trip and lose out on the $10 rental. It's worth the risk to me.

Before you visit a new park do you research the park finding the best way to navigate the park, get the best deals, or what days to go?

Yes.

Do you feel the roller coaster enthusiast community is a warm and accepting community, or a negative and discouraging community?

Meh. Skipping this question.

Do you like to talk about your hobby with people who are not roller coaster enthusiasts?

Yes! Friends and family....anyone who asks what my bnmlover email address means...they usually think it means something dirrrrrty

Acting at a local youth theatre.

What is your roller coaster count? 297

What is your home park? Kings Dominion, Carowinds, and Busch Gardens Europe are all about equal distance from me. However, I’ve only lived in NC for a couple of years, and since I spent most of my life in TN, I still consider Dollywood to be my home park.

What is the nearest big city? Raleigh, NC

What is your occupation? Student

About how many times a year do you visit a park (including your home park)? A couple

About how many times a year do you travel to a park that is not your home park? 1-2

When you travel do you go primarily to amusement parks or do you also try and hit other sites? Mostly parks, but I often try to stay with family if they live nearby to save on money and also just to visit.

What is the farthest you’ve traveled to go to an amusement park? By myself, I took a 3-day trip up to PA and OH for a few parks. I think it was something like 21 hours driving time total. With a group, I’ve traveled to California.

Does roller coaster time get in the way of family time? (Do you choose to miss your children’s or family’s sporting events, holidays, birthdays, etc…) I have no children presently, but I would certainly at least bring them with me if I had them. I have missed birthdays of older cousins, and I once spent Thanksgiving at Disney World when everyone else in my family was splitting up to do separate things for the holiday anyway, but for the most part, I don’t miss anything major.

Do you have any other major hobbies? Photography and the clarinet

Do you get feelings of sadness in the offseason? Do you even have an offseason? Do you travel during the offseason? I do, but the off-season is also a good time to make a trip to do the Florida parks, which I’ve done the past two years.

Do you consider yourself friends with someone you met who works at an amusement park? (Or reverse it, if you work or worked and an amusement park have you made friends with enthusiasts?)

I worked at WDW for a season, and met many friends there with whom I stay in touch. While I was working there, however, I did not meet an enthusiast (guest) who I stayed in contact with, mainly because my position did not allow me more than 10 second interactions with people, which didn’t exactly bode well for making life-long friendships.

Would it bother you to go to an amusement park by yourself? It never does. I always enjoy going with friends, but it is nice to go by myself sometimes so that I can do the coasters and rides that I prefer in the order in which I prefer to do them.

Have you gone to an amusement park by yourself? If so have you ever ran into another enthusiast and tagged along with them? Yes, on both accounts.

Do you find it easy to make friends with other enthusiasts? I do, however there was this one time when I met an enthusiast who was also by himself, so we decided to hang out the rest of the day. The problem was that I had already done many of the coasters he had yet to do, so I felt obligated to do them again, though in the end it prevented me from finishing the park (it was Cedar Point). I'm just so darn nice, you see.

How do you get your coaster news? Screamscape.com and themeparkreview.com

How many different forum sites do you regularly post on? Just TPR.

If there was a poll that asked a large pool of enthusiasts what their favorite roller coaster is, what do you think would be the top 3 responses be for wood? And for steel? It greatly depends on which group of enthusiasts you ask. But I’ll hazard a guess and say

1. El Toro 2. Boulderdash 3. Voyage

1. Bizzaro 2. Expedition GeForce 3. Nitro (TOTAL guesses)

Same scenario but for amusement parks, what would be the top 3?

1. Walt Disney World Resort 2. Cedar Point 3. Holiday World

(allow me to reiterate the fact that this is not MY personal ranking)

Have you ever “stolen a kid” to get a credit on a kiddie coaster? ALL. THE. TIME. YES.

Do you cut other categories out of your budget to make trips to parks? (Entertainment, fast food, holidays, tobacco or alcohol, etc…) Yes. I really don’t spend money on anything. Ever. Just trips (that’s mainly because I’m lucky to make $100 a week lately, though. I'm supa poor.)

Before you visit a new park do you research the park finding the best way to navigate the park, get the best deals, or what days to go? Usually, yes.

Do you feel the roller coaster enthusiast community is a warm and accepting community, or a negative and discouraging community? Depends on which group.

Do you like to talk about your hobby with people who are not roller coaster enthusiasts? I do, though I’m not sure how much they like to listen.

About how many times a year do you visit a park (including your home park)? I went to at least one park on about 13 separate days this year. The total number of visits to separate parks (including repeat visits) was 21.

About how many times a year do you travel to a park that is not your home park? 20 (including repeat visits), since I only visited my home park once. And the number of separate days would apparently be 12.

When you travel do you go primarily to amusement parks or do you also try to hit other sites? I travel for the purpose of visiting amusement parks.

What is the farthest you’ve traveled to go to an amusement park? In a day, 7 or 8 hours from home to Silverwood (400+ miles). Total distance, SeaWorld San Diego (929 miles).

Does roller coaster time get in the way of family time? (Do you choose to miss your children’s or family’s sporting events, holidays, birthdays, etc…) No.

Do you have any other major hobbies? No.

Do you get feelings of sadness in the offseason? Do you even have an offseason? Do you travel during the offseason?

3. I have, to parks open year-round.

Do you consider yourself friends with someone you met who works at an amusement park? (Or reverse it, if you work or worked at an amusement park have you made friends with enthusiasts?)

No.

Would it bother you to go to an amusement park by yourself? Not at all.

Have you gone to an amusement park by yourself? If so have you ever ran into another enthusiast and tagged along with them?

1. Yes.

2. No, but I’m not opposed to it.

Do you find it easy to make friends with other enthusiasts? Up to this point, I haven’t done so, but I’m definitely not the “I’m only interested in talking to established friends” type.

How do you get your coaster news? Theme Park Review and Google searches.

How many different forum sites do you regularly post on? One.

If there was a poll that asked a large pool of enthusiasts what their favorite roller coaster is, what do you think would be the top 3 responses be for wood? And for steel?

2-3 Disney parks and maybe Cedar Point for the third.

Have you ever “stolen a kid” to get a credit on a kiddie coaster? No, but I am a credit whore.

Do you cut other categories out of your budget to make trips to parks? (Entertainment, fast food, holidays, tobacco or alcohol, etc…) Yes.

Before you visit a new park do you research the park finding the best way to navigate the park, get the best deals, or what days to go?

1. If I feel I’ll need to visit certain rides first (or quickly) in order to have an efficient experience, or if I have another concern about ride locations.

2. Yes, always.

3. If I have the ability to be flexible about dates.

Do you feel the roller coaster enthusiast community is a warm and accepting community, or a negative and discouraging community? It strikes me as relatively warm and accepting, or at least not cold and unfriendly. However, I have been dismayed to hear about extremely immature, venomous drama that apparently is not overly uncommon. That really bothers me, and I hope I won’t ever experience it. Why should I have to?

Do you like to talk about your hobby with people who are not roller coaster enthusiasts? I wouldn’t mind doing so, but I would not want to be the stereotypical “annoying” type.
