College Major

I am having desperate trouble finding a carrer and major that interests me. I need something fun, realistic and I am willing to go to college as long as it takes. Also I don't care if it has Math, English, Chemistry, WHATEVER. Don't ask me what my interests are, just tell me good ideas. Also, what is your major or what was your major, what do you want your major to be when you go to college? Thanks!

Mine was magazine journalism, and I hated every second of it. So much so that I'd feel dirty working in that industry now. So choose anything other than journalism if you'd actually like to be respected for what you'll do in life

Back in the day, I wanted to go into Optometry or Meteorology...should have listened to my first, second, third, fourth and fifth instincts and stayed away from journalism!

I'm not putting my degree to use _at all_, but I have a better understanding of the world around me and the people in it!

My initial major was Psychology. I then switched to Theology. Yeah, ME ... Theology. Ended up being History before I stopped going.

 

If you just want a "Degree" go for Business Administration. It looks good on a resume.

Just go into college undecided, it is no big deal. Take classes in areas that interest you and you should have access to advisors that will help you narrow down your interests. At most colleges (well, at least the ones I've looked at) you can declare your major at the end of your sophmore year and still graduate in four years.

My major was Business Administration.

 

A Business Administration degree is a good choice because it offers you a lot of job possibilities.

 

For yourself, try to chose a major that YOU like, rather than what your parents might like. Many teenagers often go with what Mom & Pop want, and if you end up hating that major you may have to live with it, or change majors which will add to your years in college.

 

But also be realistic, if you chose a major like Philosophy, your job choices may be limited.

Ok, here's a topic in which I can consider myself an expert. I attended Framingham State College (MA) for 3 semesters, as an English major. Massive waste of time. I transferred to UMass Amherst, where I continued as an English major, before switching to theatre. I spent 2 years there as a theatre major, studying stage manangement (although I took two semesters off, due to lack of funds, I still worked on shows.) Then, I moved to Minneapolis, working as a semi-professional stage manager for two years. Got really sick of theatre people, and worked at Kinko's for a year, before deciding to go back to school at Minneapolis Community College, studying nutrition. Spent a couple of years getting in all of my science credits, and then transferred to University of MN, Twin Cities, after being accepted into the coordinated program in dietetics. Exactly one year from graduating and being certified as a registered dietician, I dropped out of school, yet again, to move back to MA, where my step-father was battling cancer and heart disease.

 

Now, 6 years later, I am the RN program at Florida Community College Jacksonville. With any luck, I may actually graduate next April!

 

My advice is: don't go to school, not knowing what you want to do, and expect to find a major. Chances are, you are not going to be terribly motivated and may be very tempted to do a lot of partying. There's no point paying all that money (or taking out all those loans) just to get drunk and fail classes. (Yes, I am speaking from experience!)

 

I'm a big fan of community college for getting the first two years of gen ed requirements out of the way. It's a lot cheaper, the classes are much smaller, and you have more access to the instructors. Then, you can transfer to a university to finish up your major.

 

I would also highly recommend choosing a major that will actually lead to a career. That is where I screwed up with nutrition, because the job outlook is dismal. Nursing, on the other hand, is the hottest profession going. My classmates and I already have hospitals trying to hire us for after we graduate.

 

My husband has an MBA in international business management, but has yet to find a job with it (6 years, now.)

 

It really sucks to spend so much time and money on school, only to find that your degree is useless.

 

One last piece of advice - whatever major you choose, the best way to land a job after graduation is to have an internship before graduation.

I got my Associate of Science in Engineering, but now I'm not sure which way to go. Since 1978 when I entered the work force, I've more or less stayed in the engineering/manufacturing field, but I'm looking hard at doing something completely different, along with finishing at least my Bachelor's degree.

 

Maybe it's a mid-life crisis or something!

I started off with Information Science and Technology but switched to Accounting when I realized it wasn't what I thought it would be (I was hoping it would be application based but it was a lot more programming which I hated). I don't like accounting much either (it's too tedious) but I am sticking with that major since I am already graduating later than I should be since I changed majors once.

I'm studying Linguistics... It may not give me such wide career options as for example a Business degree, but there are enough options available to me that I won't simply be forced into one particular job when I graduate. And I'm loving every single second of it. Do something that you enjoy that gives you several different options... As long as you don't pigeon-hole yourself, you should be fine, and doing something fun makes it easier to finish assignments, go to classes, and not waste all the money and effort you put into it. It's great to get up every day and look forward to classes. Of course, that could just be because I got to a fabulous uni over here.

I got a master in business administration, and got a bachelor in science.

I'm now an accountant for visa dps. :shock:

 

That's not quite what I was aiming for, but hey, it's a good job!

We do it differently in The UK, But I start University in a few weeks and Im doing Business Studies. I have a slight Idea of what I wanna do in the future, but Im not 100% sure. So my advice would be to pick a subject which isnt too specialist because u may have to end up in a job u dont wanna do anymore!

I got my BS in Management, and my minor was Geography. I seriously considered switching to either Statistics or GIS, but just took a lot of those classes and made it a minor instead. My degree lets me do anything I want, and that's enough for me!

I have a degree in photography. Starting my business slowly but surely.

 

I wished I could have been a music teacher. I didn't want to play in college and they looked at me as if I was strange. LOL. Teaching is so much better then playing, IMO.

I think that moinab makes a good point, but on the otherhand going to a university immediately rather than community college could expose you to a lot of things that you would otherwise miss. It really comes down to finances I suppose!

 

I also never said what I want to major in... I want to get a bachelors in biochemistry (I start college in the fall of 2006) and eventually a masters of science so I can hopefully become a pharmacologist. My doctor was just telling me today about the endless job opportunities that pharmacologists have. And I was worried that I'd get stuck at a pharmaceutical company in Jersey!

My B.A. is in Government, minor in Journalism, but my interests are wide and varied. I graduated in 1998, yet I *STILL* take college classes for personal enrichment.

I havn't declared a major yet, but I'm thinking majoring in Psychology.
