Jonathan Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 I thought it might be interesting to have a Theme Park Review group on Last.fm (Audio Scrobbler), so I created one. http://www.last.fm/group/Theme%20Park%20Review I know a lot of people on here already use Audio Scrobbler, and if you don't, it's pretty easy. Just sign up at audioscrobbler.com and then download a plug-in for whatever media player you like to use. We need to get at least 10 people signed up so that it will compile charts weekly. 8) The weekly TPR chart:
Jonathan Posted August 2, 2005 Author Posted August 2, 2005 Welcome to Audioscrobbler Audioscrobbler builds a profile of your musical taste using a plugin for your media player (Winamp, iTunes, XMMS etc..). Plugins send the name of every song you play to the Audioscrobbler server, which updates your musical profile with the new song. Every person with a plugin has their own page on this site which shows their listening statistics. The system automatically matches you to people with a similar music taste, and generates personalised recommendations.
Wes Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 Basically it reads whatever your music player is playing and then dumps it onto a website so everyone can just see that you listened to "Hey Macarena" 30x in a row. http://www.audioscrobbler.com/user/wesisrad/
Kroger8 Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 I joined, but it hasn't added any of the songs I've listened to since I've joined. EDIT: nvmd, I just added the plug-in.
Wes Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 ^ Very good question. I'm still not quite sure entirely. After awhile it starts recommending bands you might like, and people who have similar tastes as you. *shrug*
DenDen Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 These music recommendations services NEVER work well when you have an eclectic taste in music. They're based on pushing sales of sucky music, and they always recommend either stuff you already have, or things that you totally don't like. It's good if you like Britney Spears or Linkin Park, 2 very distinctive and very definable styles. (just an example, i hate britney, but LOVE LP!) But when you're into variations electronic/dance/house, (and there are many specific ones) and they start recommending losers like Moby, (why does everyone call his style electronic/techno is beyond me,) you start to see their ulterior motives.
Jonathan Posted August 2, 2005 Author Posted August 2, 2005 That's not how Audio Scrobbler works at all, actually... But anyway, like 99% of the internet, there is no point.
BiCoastal Kid Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 ^^I believe it works more along the lines of looking at other people's lists who have similar artists as you do.
Meteornotes Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 I should sign up just to screw up the stats, and to lead ususpecting people into listening to bizarre music. I can just see someone randomly sampling some Strapping Young Lad... dt
WalrusMan Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 I've joined, as WalrusMan139 what else? next week you're going to have some weird results. EDIT: And if you're a part of it, you can get my sig. Pretty easy, just play around with it a bit until you get it how you want.
kk_slider11290 Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 No one person can sway the stats. You could listen to a band 2,000 times, but it'd only add one point to their rankings on the chart for the group.
rollermonkey Posted July 6, 2006 Posted July 6, 2006 I agree. This kind of service is usually pointless to a guy like me. While on the treadmill today, my iPod played the following three songs in a row: Torn, Toad the Wet Sprocket The Bridge, Pantera Lonely Day, Bruce Springsteen I enjoyed all three, even if the pace was jarring while trying to run. When Amazon or iMusic make recommendations to me it's mostly crud. I'll check it out, but I don't have high hopes.
BiCoastal Kid Posted July 6, 2006 Posted July 6, 2006 Well, in case you all missed it, it's also a forum and a place to post music-related journal entries.
IwantRevenge Posted July 6, 2006 Posted July 6, 2006 http://www.lastfm.com/user/Vampire_freak theres my entire profile. Knock yourself out!
