Halloween Harvest, or “Howl-o-Scream Lite.” Busch Gardens is sticking with its “reservations only/limited attendance” events with Halloween Harvest during October. This is sort of “Howl-o-Scream

^^-- No, actually SFA is a better place to go for rides this time of year, although at least BGW is running 2 coasters which is better if one breaks down. I don't know if they run them below 40 degrees, when they were running B&Ms they didn't. It is also not free with season's pass, but can be (or once was) a cheaper way to get into the park than regular season otherwise.

They're running three coasters, if you count Grover's Alpine Express (this is the the first time that Forest of Fun has been open for Christmas Town); the other two are Verbolten and InvadR. I'm planning to post a report later this weekend.

I don't know if they run them below 40 degrees

Per the website:

InvadR, Verbolten ® and Nacht Tower will be closed on evenings with temperatures below 36°F

Since you mentioned Six Flags, for your convenience they've published their full, chain-wide weather policy

(in extreme detail).

The lyrics actually lend themselves perfectly into Six Flags "yolo send it" policy. +1 coasterbill

Lights, the Smell of Fresh Pine, and Gingerbread Cheesecake: Christmas Town 2017

Busch Gardens Williamsburg kicked off Christmas Town 2017 over Thanksgiving weekend, but I couldn't get there until last Friday. Much is the same as last year: You can still roam the Polar Pathway; visit small-town America (and Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer and friends) at Holiday Hills; witness the transformation of miserly Ebeneezer Scrooge into the yuletide's number-one fan at "Scrooge No More"; and take in the sights from the Flight of Lights (skyway) or Nacht Tower (aka Mach Tower in elevator mode).

But there have been some notable changes:

1. For the first time, the Sesame Street Forest of Fun is open for Christmas Town. Grover's Alpine Express was running (along with two other coasters--Verbolten and InvadR), and the other rides (except for the tiny flume ride) were open.

2. Santa's Workshop has moved from the ice-cream/gift shop in Germany to DarKastle. I didn't queue up to see the Right Jolly Old Elf, of course, but there was a two-hour wait for a audience with Santa last Friday. I wonder what Mad King Ludwig thinks about all this?

3. There's a new show in Italy: "Gift of Harmony," an a cappella group singing Christmas classics. This replaces the old "Miracles" show. You can still "Deck the Halls" at the Festhaus, feel reverential during "Gloria" in Ireland, take in "O' Tannenbaum" in front of the Festhaus, and shiver during "Twas the Night," an ice-skating show inspired by "A Visit from St. Nicholas," in France.

4. There's a small preview center for the new VR ride in Ireland.

Christmas Town has become an important part of Christmas in Williamsburg (along with Colonial Williamsburg's Grand Illumination, which happens tonight). It's nice to just stroll around, take in the lights, and have a nice holiday-themed meal (or some treats, of course).

Merry Christmas! Let's go in.

001.thumb.jpg.fba44b063985fbb66d226cfce3513236.jpg

It’s always good to see a sign that assures you that you’re in the right place.

002.thumb.jpg.e2c7a8ccc1dac53a4d1d8555eb847755.jpg

Just in case you want to play freeze out on any rides, here’s what’s open.

003.thumb.jpg.ff8df6298a9e61f0c7da202cbe5eba25.jpg

No, I did not count the lights. You’ll have to take BGW at its word. And did they all "twinkle"? I have no answer.

004.thumb.jpg.f4150888df34e32739f1e6610a294146.jpg

This Christmas tree really has big ornaments. Ha! You thought I was going to say “balls,” didn’t you?

005.thumb.jpg.4a7bfe90799924d18d6a0b2eda7ce3ad.jpg

Hmm . . . what to do first?

006.thumb.jpg.1f373eac0d3a9655c3272072f31c93da.jpg

I could always grab some “traditional Christmas fare” in Dickens' Tavern. This would include hamburgers, which I guess were very big in Dickensian London.

007.thumb.jpg.575688336a7c5c99a77961effc5592cb.jpg

Well, it is almost time for “Scrooge No More.” Might as well see it.

009.thumb.jpg.e360934d1e2d15fa49ac02307543d645.jpg

Oh, look! It’s the classic “pulling down a spotlight with an invisible rope” bit.

011.thumb.jpg.77c2dbc06034d729b76d2b4b502621d4.jpg

Er, are you sure this isn’t Howl-o-Scream?

012.thumb.jpg.346548ddb2bc34bc19439d3cb74a9cb4.jpg

Whew! That’s more like it.

013.thumb.jpg.e156682ec6c475c7f6fdf548921137f8.jpg

“Out of my way! No one’s doing that ‘invisible rope’ bit while Scrooge is here!”

014.thumb.jpg.072fdce4121a18c5206aa78602e66043.jpg

Bah! Humbug! Etc., etc. . . . I think you know the rest of the story.

016.thumb.jpg.97148981657b846a92c770dfea824624.jpg

Time to leave England . . .

017.thumb.jpg.0a2aa8ccf429019801ca4f795842bc93.jpg

. . . unless you want a beer or some other adult beverage.

018.thumb.jpg.35b5edb6ebcef0006ddb9a9203e4b0a5.jpg

As usual, Scotland is having a blue Christmas.

019.thumb.jpg.91a269c11bf81a58f12e301a2fe2a762.jpg

This is the first time that Forest of Fun has been open for Christmas Town.

020.thumb.jpg.b132cc811d44f87c06aeb3399ac2b348.jpg

This looks like Sesame Street’s idea of a Christmas tree lot.

“There’s a nice donut stand near the entrance of the Polar Pathway. Could you get a nice bear some nice donuts? Please?”

023.thumb.jpg.5609a16ca5ec712a2913de023402d719.jpg

Polar Pathway is the prettiest spot at Christmas Town. I like the music they play there, too.

Italy is Yukon Cornelius Approved. Gold! Silver! Yahoo!

025.thumb.jpg.9d7c9340150f6520c0773f940a2f3e6f.jpg

This is how Yukon would decorate a Christmas tree.

026.thumb.jpg.0639526ee8324a9e889f7a4149a923e2.jpg

My next favorite spot at Christmas Town. I like the "old school" decorations (reminds me of my hometown when I was a kid).

028.thumb.jpg.80fa85ba7f4d37ed5e31b2a2a649010e.jpg

There’s a little theater showing an edited version of “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” It has bench seats and bean-bag chairs.

029.thumb.jpg.676ed9679683208b18eab671d061d5bb.jpg

The Bumble Snow Monster gets a bad rap.

029a.thumb.jpg.44ad80b1ef46b133b284772f4148708d.jpg

Santa Claus is the real villain of the story. He’s a bad boss who treats everyone (especially Rudolph) like crap, and in this scene he sort of “blames” Rudolph for the disappearance of Rudolph’s parents and Clarice (even though Santa's rejection of Rudolph and the other reindeer's desire to earn his favor drives the whole plot). “King of Jingle-ling,” my butt. Santa’s a jerk.

029b.thumb.jpg.81158626d27b32d277f7f9897202b6cc.jpg

The Rudolph meet and greet is in the Apollo’s Chariot queue house.

029c.thumb.jpg.ce3a8d916a701d52d35942dd4c2ce9ee.jpg

I like how they re-themed the games. Yes, you can help Herbie pound on teeth here.

031.thumb.jpg.112773a60df0ba5e8b96efb3eb4ea560.jpg

“‘Jerk,’ am I? You will kneel to the Claus!” Ulp! Guess I'm getting coal in my stocking this year. More photos to come.

Time to see how festive the rest of the park looks.

032.thumb.jpg.8943ba764b018baab2582fbfa8e7fdb8.jpg

I escaped the wrath of Kris Kringle by crossing the bridge into Germany.

033.thumb.jpg.f565e5d4259ee38c6d3a2b2a200905a3.jpg

The Festhaus is looking even more festive than usual.

034.thumb.jpg.2e0718bf64d12cb5a909bf26ef083cda.jpg

“Deck the Halls” runs here. It’s like those Christmas specials they used to run on TV when I was a kid.

034a.thumb.jpg.08745f41aae9116f32f62cadeb156573.jpg

I missed the show, but I did have a sirloin sandwich and some gingerbread cheesecake--and beer, of course.

035.thumb.jpg.88d02429122b379a6fe9642d60359926.jpg

“O’ Tannenbaum” is a music-and-light show that takes place outside the Festhaus every 30 minutes. It’s nice, and always draws a crowd.

036.thumb.jpg.a22a57220c9d08b7495b43f1a64e58b9.jpg

Once again, Ludwig has been forced to rent out DarKastle--this time, to Santa.

037.thumb.jpg.2a2abcef4300f5cd702d5b9b6b7ea3d9.jpg

They moved the North Pole to the DarKastle queue. This knocked the Earth off its axis, and now we’re hurtling toward the sun. Nice one, Claus.

038.thumb.jpg.6a5504fc110a99705d929db414654962.jpg

DarKastle has never looked so festive. Somewhere, King Ludwig is crying out his rage.

039.thumb.jpg.26906a233dae782ec603a9494bd2745f.jpg

If the line is too long to see Santa (it was two hours when I was there), Saucy, the Elf, has a gift for you to unwrap.

039a.thumb.jpg.e70e57d182ec38dcfd9e6db4b5bbfdae.jpg

Being as I had a great time at the real Oktoberfest this year (thanks, again, Robb and Elissa), I must buy this ornament.

040.thumb.jpg.ef3c79a310b87bcbd144a163df4ecd81.jpg

Santa’s Workshop and the North Pole used to be here.

041.thumb.jpg.7047706fcb235593c8813d6467cd0fb2.jpg

They’re selling cookies and hot chocolate there this year. Works for me.

042.thumb.jpg.b32228e435b9ee73ac16c362dcfa39e3.jpg

And now, time for a little religion. You’re welcome.

043.thumb.jpg.a2f41c823d9c2dea292d6f3b011c3d99.jpg

Bring me the head of Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer . . .

043a.thumb.jpg.87739e45508d639e1baa60e09273f533.jpg

. . . and his skin, which I shall wear as a onesie! Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha!

043b.thumb.jpg.c870283d058d47655267ebcf1800065c.jpg

It wouldn’t be Germany at Christmas Town . . .

044.thumb.jpg.d03d4d65aae79c696e037b935d6504b9.jpg

. . . without Creepy, the Psycho Elf.

045.thumb.jpg.639e2fa89f1e0fc0e0be2a336a58181b.jpg

As usual, Fort New France is all red and green.

046.thumb.jpg.444b44d7af1151bdb0e719d19b97e68b.jpg

Even InvadR is feeling a little festive.

047.thumb.jpg.367e3c174527fbb1bcbd3e44408071b0.jpg

Deer Crossing. Caution Advised.

048.thumb.jpg.015c107a0dc4e89bd0593f31b616919f.jpg

Welcome to France.

538446148_049-Copy.thumb.jpg.8817240ae21e85bd8e331424ddb34922.jpg

It’s all about the “12 Days of Christmas” here.

108423470_050-Copy.thumb.jpg.a095e0cd4f49676752fa19897ab910bd.jpg

I like the subdued colors, too.

786839105_051-Copy.thumb.jpg.600cb1418bdee77713ea6eb6b62449b1.jpg

It’s a long walk from France to Ireland.

748229705_052-Copy.thumb.jpg.abbeacec537fbd0b651e2fefc4fd8bcd.jpg

Ireland isn’t green this year, for some reason, but you can still partake of Santa's Fireside Feast in Castle O'Sullivan.

860567587_053-Copy.thumb.jpg.06557e7f7d4ea0ac1870bbb5ea91c870.jpg

I love the use of “candles” on the Abbeystone Theatre. This makes sense as it’s the home of the “Gloria” show.

If you’re curious about the park’s new attraction for 2018 . . .

055.thumb.jpg.a15d3a6a11924fed1b0540412807f69f.jpg

. . . just wander into the preview center (it’ll take all of 30 seconds).

056.thumb.jpg.5eeadede950511c482a4c55b642f9d2c.jpg

Time to go.

057.thumb.jpg.ca92f6bc0f89c1e107fbc7282a0188ee.jpg

England bids you “Happy Christmas.”

058.thumb.jpg.8654b29c84b651cb1836fbc8d3782644.jpg

That’s all from Christmas Town. Thanks for reading.

Great report as always, Chuck - thanks for sharing!

Busch parks really know how to bring it at their holiday events and this looks like no exception. Can't wait to experience Christmas Town at BGT in the coming weeks!

Awesome report Chuck! I miss having a park close to me,

that does the holidays like Busch (and others) does.

Also - great ornament find!

P.S. Yukon Cornelius is The Real Hero, in my humble opinion.

Awesome report of an awesome event! I like the idea of a preview center for new rides, so curious guests who don't constantly scour the Internet for new ride rumours can get excited about the new attraction. Makes me wonder why more parks don't do that.

^It's my favorite Christmas Town dessert. The donuts on the Polar Pathway are good, too, but they have trouble keeping up with the demand.

I'm surprised the website doesn't have operating hours posted for 2018. Anyone know the schedule for March and April?

Ditto

I have tweeted BGW twice with no response. I'd really like to know their April hours since Easter in on April 1st and King's Dominion is open that entire next week. I am hoping to fly up and marathon ride Twisted Timbers but also bop down to BGW if they're open as well.
