Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom Discussion Thread

p. 149 - Cars Frontierland expansion, new nighttime parade, and new Villains Land announced at D23!

^I Agree. Would have preferred less detail in the queue/building, and a more complete version of the ride. But at the end of the day, the detail is incredible and I'm just happy Magic Kingdom is getting something new!

An E-Ticket themed building for a C-Ticket ride!

I must be the only person who thought the DCA Mermaid ride was a really good dark ride! Not sure if it's just the pathetic California passholders that have given it a bad rap or whatever, but I have a feeling this ride will do insanely well with the WDW audience who aren't jaded and obnoxious.

It's not a bad ride, and certainly higher quality than any of the older fantasyland attractions. It's just that it focuses more on the musical scenes of the movies rather than telling the story and it misses some of the key moments because of that, then the ending is just kinda slapped on there.

Of course all the hardcore Disney fans are going to like the classic rides better, because they are Disney fans.

These ride are made for kids though, and when people review things like this they always seem to leave out what kids think of it. I guarantee kids prefer the music over compressing the whole story of a Disney film into 2 minutes. Kids don't recite random dialogue but they certainly always seem to know the lyrics.

I liked it too. Feels like it might be missing a scene or two, but the 'under the sea' section is spectacular enough on its own.

I honestly was not trying to be mean. If I recall, all the other Fantasyland rides in the area were all C-tickets back in the day. The Little Mermaid will fit in perfectly with all of the other attractions in the area. It is just that the queue looks so much more extravagant than the actual ride (if it is an exact clone of the DCA version). It is not a complaint by any means, just my observation.

http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2012/09/ahoy-changes-are-afoot-at-pirates-of-the-caribbean-at-magic-kingdom-park/

In honor of International Talk Like a Pirate Day, I’m excited to have a bit of news to share on one of my all-time favorite attractions, Pirates of the Caribbean here at Magic Kingdom Park.

This classic Disney attraction, which inspired a four-part film franchise, has undergone a few changes in recent years due to the success of these movies. First, Captain Jack Sparrow made his debut at the attraction, then Captain Barbossa (pictured above) appeared aboard a pirate ship. More recently, the ghostly apparitions of knaves Davy Jones and Blackbeard have materialized.

Our friends at Walt Disney Imagineering dropped us a line today to let us know that something from the most recent film, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” is about to be added to the attraction here at Walt Disney World Resort. Can you guess what it is?

Updates to the attraction will be made overnight, so Pirates of the Caribbean will remain open to guests during park hours.

Keep a weather eye on the Disney Parks Blog for more details!

http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2012/09/guests-can-now-meet-tinker-bells-sister-periwinkle-at-disneyland-and-magic-kingdom-parks/

Tinker Bell’s newly discovered sister, Periwinkle, is the newest fairy friend to meet guests at Disney Parks. Introduced in the upcoming film “Secret of the Wings,” the “frost fairy” Periwinkle is intrigued by the other seasons once she meets a warm fairy (her sis Tinker Bell), and she becomes eager to make new friends beyond the Winter Woods.

The newest Disney Fairies movie, “Secret of the Wings,” comes to Blu-ray and DVD October 23.

Scheduled for appearances during the fall and winter months, Periwinkle joins Tinker Bell at Pixie Hollow at Disneyland park and inside Tinker Bell’s Magical Nook at Magic Kingdom Park. (Be sure to check the Times Guide when you visit for the current schedule.)

And while you’re visiting their magical home, be on the lookout — when Tinker Bell and Periwinkle get close to each other, their fairy wings illuminate in magical fashion.

In addition to Periwinkle’s sparkling winter-wear, Tinker Bell dons new cozy clothes to welcome guests for these special meet-and-greet opportunities.

  • 2 weeks later...

On Friday I had the chance to stop by the Magic Kingdom for a few hours to check out the latest progress going on at New Fantasyland. As December 6th rapidly approaches, the land nears completion excluding the Seven Dwarves Mine Train Coaster and the Princess Fairytale Hall which will open over the next two years.

DSC09455.thumb.JPG.4fe29897de08b5301e031021d6f480e5.JPG

Seven Dwarves has received a good deal of additional progress since my last visit. The show or queue building beneath the main structure is mostly sealed and more work has been accomplished on building the structure that will support the outdoor terrain for the new mountain.

DSC09458.thumb.JPG.242d4df31573269b407642a651765958.JPG

Initial supports for the eventual installation of rock work framing have begun to appear.

DSC09461.thumb.JPG.094edb71eb8bf5a8e76fc8545a66d9d5.JPG

Over at Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid, the addition of faux grass to the top of the attraction's facade is nearly complete.

DSC09462.thumb.JPG.f2e6f3eb5e1fdb27d29c5663e6c75d4b.JPG

Believe it or not, Storybook Circus is now completely open to guests!

DSC09464.thumb.JPG.ead8793c18457453510ef64b22665c32.JPG

It is hard to believe that this was Mickey's ToonTown Fair a little over a year ago, but the new area looks great!

DSC09465.thumb.JPG.8b31c5d0e5db6b0ad0aa6b6a11882157.JPG

The new area has no shortage of character!

DSC09466.thumb.JPG.370c4c3fc78874fc50727bbe1c89bb62.JPG

Big Top Souvenirs has two entrances/exits to allow for easy access from within the "land."

DSC09467.thumb.JPG.c21217b6f65c7e508290638fce530d6d.JPG

Some of the character banners honor some lesser-remembered characters like Salty the Seal and Humphrey the Bear.

DSC09468.thumb.JPG.7e9d60e89c77f4f8e89a52c654089b91.JPG

The third tent ended up as a covered seating area that also plays host to the FastPass machines for Dumbo and the Barnstormer.

DSC09469.thumb.JPG.a0819e8b3c97b254228327fdb38ab801.JPG

The tent's interior is spacious and a great place to escape the Florida rain.

DSC09472.thumb.JPG.fbee534715307b933e2641a6c967d5e7.JPG

The new FastPass machines feature the new LED time displays found throughout Storybook Circus (the same ones that have slowly been installed elsewhere in the park as well).

DSC09474.thumb.JPG.80f529689c9cd489102cce1c5ec49d51.JPG

This artwork wasn't just designed for the construction walls!

DSC09481.thumb.JPG.88ade716e86357d8f36212752974395c.JPG

Between the third tent and the Casey Jr. Splash 'n' Soak attraction is a huge seating area complete with new hot dog and pretzel carts.

DSC09481.thumb.JPG.0f38a42c7647b3e07a4c9fba5ce7224b.JPG

Pete's Silly Sideshow is a new attraction taking up the tent formerly used in ToonTown for meet & greets. It is split in two with one line leading to a meet with Minnie Daisy and the other to Goofy & Donald. Both meets exit out into the Big Top Souvenirs tent using the former entrance path for the meet and greet originally used by the ToonTown meet & greets.

DSC09482.thumb.JPG.563ea7532f22b5cc2fd9c67e333321da.JPG

The Melody Time Brass Horn Band Calliope was actually taken from Disneyland Paris to be added to the Storybook Circus.

DSC09485.thumb.JPG.99b6bd109362fb91144740e2d0da46e2.JPG

If there's one thing that I found most impressive about the new aspects of Storybook Circus, it would definitely be the level of detail and aging work that went into making the story believable and immersive. This is one touch that I really love for the area.

DSC09486.thumb.JPG.41b84132e92e04f6cca4838c4a70ffe8.JPG

Let's start with Daisy and Minnie...

DSC09487.thumb.JPG.81e6497498296c9ca9e8ef7de79f51be.JPG

A bit of story for the duo...

DSC09492.thumb.JPG.18b5a4a92bd46c4f5463eeef75746b82.JPG

This looks fantastic!

DSC09499.thumb.JPG.c61526b0b00d7b0e8b30aa08b9fa1d53.JPG

Popcorn lights are awesome.

DSC09508.thumb.JPG.34f97239d6f8bb427a083e0d868a2329.JPG

Minnie's set features pirouetting parisian poodles... Sadly theirs names aren't Collette, Susette, Mimi, Gigi, Fifi and Josephine.

DSC09509.thumb.JPG.9c01ab93185ae0dcd5ef404f77167353.JPG

Since the meet & greets are linear in style with a family moving from the first character to the next, there are often delays between families getting to the next characters, so it isn't uncommon to see the second character interacting with guests in line in between families, which is awesome.

DSC09517.thumb.JPG.bfeaaeeccba2cb5a11746c6821d51081.JPG

Here's Daisy...

DSC09527.thumb.JPG.6b0cd631a42e7dd467808673ea5527c5.JPG

These mannequins scare me.

DSC09528.thumb.JPG.c6ffbc012e63d5bb6640b9af91dba84d.JPG

Big Top Souvenirs definitely feels bigger than its predecessor, but that additional space is filled with extra merchandise and retail operations.

DSC09529.thumb.JPG.c02e0a071e4cbbfe01a397fb107ecbc1.JPG

Some of the newest merchandising trends have found their place underneath the Big Top.

DSC09532.thumb.JPG.9528a2376ca13d95b5364cddfcd835cb.JPG

Speaking of Under the Big Top...

DSC09530.thumb.JPG.556e4d9e81038cd3af3d410c3d490419.JPG

The entire tent is carpeted but the center of the ring has a different design to make it look like the canvas performance ring (still carpet though).

DSC09544.thumb.JPG.6692573054c42c6deda0beaebf37d9d1.JPG

Be sure to look up for some more subtle circus details.

DSC09545.thumb.JPG.b7722bb65cc19bb43147271582c63ded.JPG

Canvas carpet!

DSC09548.thumb.JPG.ad30164758bc224a294241da0ded49f6.JPG

Big Top Treats is located at the center of Big Top Souvenirs and features an on-stage kitchen to allow guests to watch their sweet treats being made.

DSC09550.thumb.JPG.075d7d27166e715a0763372259c120fc.JPG

And there are tons of sweet treats to be had!

DSC09554.thumb.JPG.33b1e2a730f903adae1e8aa6623380b5.JPG

Back outside the detail continues...

DSC09555.thumb.JPG.399933832c4ba34efafc4be8889dbb4f.JPG

Mickey pretzels!

DSC09557.thumb.JPG.f4ddda6fb3119c0e43e6d7a6be6ecc06.JPG

DSC09561.thumb.JPG.2fb13e140ebf704b121e09677ee25e62.JPG

DSC09564.thumb.JPG.15b9f8c095cc6b673bcfac9ed47cbe76.JPG

There's a banner for each of the meet & greets on the side of the entrance to each queue.

DSC09565.thumb.JPG.b056bb6c805a80378b23fa85a8c7bb29.JPG

Here's the other one...

DSC09568.thumb.JPG.d1c7871d8cae5a485a72c4bd0e1c480e.JPG

There's more story for the other side of Pete's Silly Sideshow...

DSC09569.thumb.JPG.83c2f8aae582ed7c65ad8c902474a189.JPG

And here it is!

DSC09572.thumb.JPG.5833eca7a35aae50255bac207ca4aea0.JPG

The Great Goofini has a neat background set including a smoking motorcycle from one of his botched stunts.

DSC09577.thumb.JPG.222f51d5e67c7a085bcb6343850fe03a.JPG

And here's Donald's location.

DSC09579.thumb.JPG.6092b644f6683a4b263bd64221c09d51.JPG

A look at the whole complex...

DSC09588.thumb.JPG.8b4bbc31a8184b5883923f05b77f7a43.JPG

Some more circus ads on the outside.

DSC09589.thumb.JPG.570c7c5521c7f47911cd43fbdc6541a7.JPG

Progress on the Seven Dwarves Mine Train is still speeding along.

DSC09590.thumb.JPG.1fe58f3cae8eb7b61744b88697a7490c.JPG

I can't wait to see this sign lit up!

DSC09601.thumb.JPG.4d35b6efa7e1eee06a28565f9afc833f.JPG

At the end of Fantasyland work continues on the construction of the new restrooms and rumored Rapunzel meet and greet.

DSC09604.thumb.JPG.bf14437c9a1e6dc9f9d91e93b77424b7.JPG

Honey, we've got track!

DSC09605.thumb.JPG.93e3c729f2e5da2c2c6b4ebb2652f5ea.JPG

It's just a lift hill right now, but that's definitely progress!

DSC09607.thumb.JPG.82974f640c295cc8a8408a0d63b406c7.JPG

FastPass+ entrances continue to spring up at existing attractions in the park...
