Seattle and North California adventures

Now presenting the final park of the trip... (Dramatic music) Six Flags Discovery Kingdom!

Again, the other family members had their own matters to do, so only me and Dad went to SFDK. Even Mom, our photographer decided not to come (as she absolutely HATES roller coasters). We ended up having to take our own pictures. Nothing wrong with that, as I make sure I put the camera back in my pants pocket and close it before the ride starts. The crowds weren’t bad at all. The queues were barely packed and most rides were walk ons. Didn't need to get the Flashpass.

As we walked through the entrance gates, Medusa, Kong, and Cobra welcomed us. They also had some tribal/jungle music playing throughout the park which I really liked. It's better than the music selection at other parks. First credit of the day, Cobra. Bye bye Zierer virginity! Although it seems like a cute little family coaster, watch out for those turns! Dad usually doesn't care for kid's coasters but he enjoyed this one. For a kid’s coaster, Cobra is quite exciting actually. Very well themed too especially the train.

Next up, since it was nearby, Kong. I had such a bad experience with an SLC 2 years ago and I really didn't think I wanted to touch another one of those things. But Dad and I decided to do this anyways. When it was just about our turn, it had technical difficulties and had to stop for a bit. We didn't know how long it would be so we decided we might as well head for another ride. As soon as we got out of the queue line and started to leave that area, we just noticed that Kong was up and running again so we decided to go for a ride. Didn't have problems with Kong and it was smoother than I thought. Sure it's no B&M invert, but better than my last experience with an SLC.

Even thought Medusa was nearby, we decided to save it for last since there wasn’t much lineups all day. On our way to V2: Vertical Velocity (aka 45 degree velocity), we pass by various animal exhibits such as dolphins, penguins, birds, and seals. V2 wasn't exactly a walk on but pretty much a 5 minute wait give or take. I think I've officially gotten over my fear of hangtime and started to enjoy it. Where we sat we got some good hangtime on that inversion!

Time to head over to Roar to love my GCI virginity. Turns out it was closed. I was extremely disappointed as now I have to remain a GCI Virgin for some time. Because Roar was down for maintenance, we decided to take another lap on V2 since the wait was so short.

Dad doesn't like flat rides much, especially those that stop you upside down, so only I rode Hammerhead Shark. Hammerhead is a Zamperla Hawk (Kamikaze/Skymaster type ride with inverted seating). Again, great hangtime on this one! I decided to ride this one because I missed out on HMB Endeavor at CGA. Yeah, they're not the same ride but close enough.

Next up, Boomerang. Not a walk on due to the shuttle nature of the ride, but about a 15 minute wait in the nice hot weather. Unlike the other Boomerangs I've seen so far, this one doesn't run with an Arrow train. It runs with a Vekoma train (thought it was an Arrow at first until I saw the Vekoma logo on the backrest). This one wasn't rough at all, in fact it was smoother than Flashback at SFOT. Dad enjoyed it too.

Since there were literally little or no lineups for most rides that day, we decided to ride The Ark (Pirate ship) too. Although we sat at the very end of the boat, no airtime! Guess it's not really meant to be a thrilling ride. Is The Ark a heavily themed Zamperla Galleon? Looks like it to me.

Before heading to Medusa, we decided to watch the Shouka Celebration (killer whale show). Reminded me a lot of the killer whale that used to be at Vancouver Aquarium (R.I.P. Bijossa). When we got to Medusa, the weather was really heating up. Even frozen lemonade didn't help as I was really overheating. Good thing Medusa's queue area is enclosed. When I first asked Dad about whether he'd be willing to ride Medusa (I told him it's got 7 inversions), he said no way. But now, he decided to ride it with me and enjoyed it. I really think that the whole floorless thing doesn't really do much for me. Just felt like a normal sit down looper, or maybe because I don't like to look down? It's my first B&M floorless so I can't really compare it to the others. At the end of the ride, Dad was like "Did we just get flipped upside down seven times?!"

After Medusa, we decided to take a re-ride on Kong since it's not too rough of a ride and the line was short. We took the front seat this time and it was way more intense! Too intense as a matter of fact. I swear my vision went blurry going through that sea serpent roll! After I got off I couldn't really walk properly for like a minute. 3 high g rides in a row probably affected it (Boomerang, Medusa, Kong). Heat + 4.5 g's + hunger + not too good general health = problems with g forces. So glad the effects went away pretty fast and weren't as bad as the last time I rode an SLC. That re-ride was such a bad idea.

We ended up skipping Tony Hawk (due to my motion sickness, I have to remain a Gerstlauer virgin for some time) and Roadrunner Express (forgot all about it until I went home and looked on RCDB). Well, that's all folks for the Seattle and North California adventures.

I have enjoyed this thread, and it totally sucks about your "GCI virginity" hopefully you will lose it soon(I am still a GCI virgin until I ride terminator sometime in the future) anyways, its cool that on a lot of your vacations you go to parks, I wish my family was more like that.

It's a real shame that you couldn't ride Roar, but it sounds like you had a great day, I love the vekoma nerd shot, it's too bad I couldnt get a picture of the word "Intamin" on v2's wheel. This has been a really great thread though, awesome job

Arrrrgh. Roar was great. Not amazing but great. Not cool when coasters are closed.

Reminded me of my trip back there in 2006... had a great time. Enjoyed the coasters and the shows. But one thing I don't agree on AT ALL; Kong is not on my GOOD list, not even on my OK list. It's on the NEVER-RIDE-AGAIN-FOR-THE-REST-OF-YOUR-LIFE list.

Sorry you missed Roar, I missed Kong when I went. I'm just really surprised you skipped Tony Hawk for motion sickness, and yet you rode that hammerhead flat ride! I took one look at that thing after my dizzy ride on Tony Hawk and nearly fainted! You are truly brave. Also, I like that you research your coasters before you ride them, it makes me want to include more info in my TRs. Great job!

Haha thanks guys for all your comments. Hammerhead Shark is a Zamperla Hawk I think. I didn't notice the Intamin logo on V2's wheels otherwise I would have taken a picture of it.

The thing with my motion sickness is that I'm ok with looping and twisting, but NOT spinning. Spinning makes me sick.

Because I had to skip Roar and Tony Hawk, I get to keep my GCI and Gerstlauer virginities for some time to come. I won't be visiting another park other than Playland for quite awhile.

Was a great trip for me and the family. Me and Dad have never ridden so many coasters in such a short time before!
