Griffin does Michigan's Adventure!

Recommended Posts

On Independence Day my dad and I decided to head out to Michigan's Adventure for the first time, and we quickly found out how great of a park it is!

Our on ride photo that the park emailed us! isn't that cool? Overall, this park is awesome for it's size. I can't wait to go back and I hope that you go there too!

Wow, awesome pictures! You got me excited for my trip there on the on July 26!

I've heard that Thunderhawk is smoother then most SLCs...and since it will be my first one, that's definitely a good thing, lol.

Shivering Timbers looks really good...hopefully it will deliver. I seem to hold the idea that it doesn't rank very well or isn't really hyped because it's kinda out of the way, and not many people have ridden it (to an extent, the same idea looks to hold true for the park itself).

Thunderhawk was my first SLC too. I rode it twice, both in the back row. The first ride was bad, but the next one was better.

Shivering Timbers is best in the front, but in the back you will be jackhammered like there is no tomorrow. But I still found it fun!

These are great photos! Glad you had fun.

Did you go to the water park?

It's a pretty nice water park. It's so nice that, that's where the majority of the people end up. Which is a good thing if you ask me. They can stay on the slides, and I'll stay on Shivering Timbers.

I'm slightly skeptical of that notion. Shivering Timbers was once very "hyped," and was even the number one wooden coaster at one point, according to Mitch Hawker's poll. And it's still in the top 20.

I will say that The Voyage has probably stolen some of its thunder as the "must get out and ride it" out and back. But I also think it's true that the ride itself simply isn't quite as good as it used to be.

I went around the beginning of June with my brother-in-law and his friend while Melissa and I were in Michigan, and I felt the Shivering Timbers still delivered a great ride. I also liked how they did the landscaping and placement of Thunderhawk to the pond.

Good collection of pictures you have there!

To me, Timbers had the perfect combination of airtime, speed, and "non-painful" roughness that made it my #1 coaster.

I also thought that Thunderhawk looked great in it's location. I also noticed that they were making a new path that will connect Shivering Timbers to Thunderhawk/Grand Rapids. It takes forever to get from one side of the park to the other without it!

I felt like Shivering Timbers was a good ride when I got on it for the first time a couple years ago. It gave a smooth enough ride and the floater air during the first half of the ride was superb. The second half was pretty mediocre imo, the trick track was pretty fun but that was about it.

I had rode Thunderhawk when it was at Geauga Lake, and it was a bit rough, nothing too much to write home about. My other SLC is Top Gun, and I found it to be rather smooth. I will say this, I do love the SLCs for the sheer fact that it's nothing but leg choppers.

As for your pics, good job. One question, have they connected the dead end where Thundrhawk is? I have the park map somewhere, but I haven't bee yet. I did hear good things.

Keep it up the good work.

I thought MIA was pretty mediocre when we went - outside of Shivering Timbers, I didn't like any of the coasters, and the flat ride collection was bleh at best. Shivering Timbers was AWESOME, though!!! Crazy air! It was definitely the pre-cursor to Voyage in that it kicked the crap out of you a bit, it was really long, and had a boatload of hills.

Is the park EVER crowded?

Wow, that brought back a lot of memories. I grew up about 30-40 minutes away from there. I remember going to Michigan Adventure back when it was called Deer Park Funland. Only coaster they had for a long time was the Corkscrew. It used to be a white track and the trains were red and blue. Was my very first coaster too! Last time I went was in the mid 90's when the only other coaster was the Wolverine Wildcat.

I really want to go back sometime and check out the other coasters that have been built. Maybe within the next couple years I'll get back up north again. I want to go to Cedar Point again sometime too... haven't been there since 1990!

The coasters weren't terrible when I went, but the flats still weren't good either.

I spoke to one of the "higher ups" and they said that this was the most crowded that it's been all year, and there was nobody there! I felt bad for the park because it deserves so much better!

From what I understand, the park has experienced greater growth in attendence than most of the other CF parks, but it could be a down year for them with the economy of Michigan being in really bad shape. I would not be surprised though if it turned out that most of the people go to the waterpark on a daily basis as opposed to the ride side, hence the reason it may seem as though the ride side is never really crowded.

There used to be 3 or 4 water parks in West Michigan back in the 80's, but they're all gone now. So now the only one that I know of is Wild Water Adventure. Michiganders love their water parks. Also, I think more Michiganders go to Cedar Point or Kings Island for their rides and coasters. Back in the 80's we also had Boblo Island (I miss that place).

To me, it's just amazing how much that park has grown since it was Deer Park Funland. I can still hear the song from the old commercials in my head.

"Deer Park Funalnd... You'll have more fun... It's the good time place!"

Hey there, great pics on Michigan Adventures. I plan to be there during the first week of August when I go on my big road trip.

It seems you snapped tons of pictures of the Corkscrew roller coaster. Unless I'm mistaken, I believe that coaster is the last of it's type (one train and two corkscrew loops) when Busch Gardens Africa took out their own corkscrew coaster (called the "Cobra") last year.

I was there in 2001 when Cedar Fair bought the property and it looked like a little dinky park with tons of room for growth back then. I can't wait to see what the park looks like today.

I hope I get
