'Wheel of Fortune' announcer Charlie O'Donnell dies at 78 By GARY LYCAN FOR THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER Charlie O'Donnell, the familiar announcing voice on KABC-TV's "Wheel of Fortune" for more than 26 years, died overnight in his sleep, his agent confirmed Monday to the Orange County Register. O'Donnell, 78, lived in Sherman Oaks, with his wife Ellen. He has four children and two grandchildren. A family spokesperson said, "They are too upset to talk right now." A woman who works on "Wheel" at Sony studios also confirmed O'Donnell's death. The cause of death was reportedly heart failure, according to family friend and longtime radio personality Johnny Hayes. "Charlie was by far one of the greatest show announcers ever," said his long-time agent Fred Wostbrock. "He gave life to that copy on 'Wheel.' Even the way he said 'Wheeeel of Fortune' started the excitement in the first two seconds of the game. He was as much a part of that show as Vanna White and Pat Sajak, and Charlie was with the original 'Wheel' with Chuck Woolery and Susan Stafford," he said. "I am very lucky that I have had such a wonderful home base at Wheel of Fortune," O'Donnell was quoted as saying in his Biography on the Wheel of Fortune website. "Throughout my 40 plus years working as an announcer, I have had the honor to have worked with some of the leading entertainers in the world." In 1987, O'Donnell was chosen to announce the arrival of Pope John Paul II at the Papal Teleconference at Universal Amphitheatre. He was the announcer for the Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl and Dodger Stadium in 1965 and 1966; announced the Rolling Stones at the Long Beach Auditorium in 1965; and was the voice of Dick Clark's "American Bandstand" for 10 years. According to his biography, O'Donnell's other credits include: "The Dating Game," "Everybody's Talking," "The Gong Show," "The Guinness Game," "Hot Potato," "The Joker's Wild," "Let's Go Back," "Monopoly," "The Newlywed Game," "The Parent Game," "Stompers," "Tic Tac Dough," "To Tell The Truth," "Trivia Trap," "Wedding Party," "The Wizard of Odds" and "Wordplay." Legendary funny man Leslie Nielsen died today of complications of pneumonia in a hospital near his home in Fort Lauderdale, this according to his agent. He was 84. His agent tells TMZ Nielsen passed surrounded by his wife and friends at about 5:34 PM ET. Nielsen was best known for his roles in "Airplane" and the "Naked Gun" series. Very sad!! He was hilarious! Here's a picture from when I interviewed him several years ago when they re-released the Pirates 4-D Movie at Busch Gardens Tampa. I think I'm going to go watch Airplane! on the Roku! Irvin Kershner, the man who took on the risky role of directing the first sequel to "Star Wars," died today, his goddaughter Adriana Santini told AFP. He was 87 years old. Many of his sequels, including "The Empire Strikes Back," were questioned by critics as departing too much from the original movies. His versions were much darker and spunkier films that found public appreciation, if not critical appeal. In a fascinating interview with Vanity Fair in October, he imparted the depressing news that he should have helmed one of the "Star Wars" prequels in hindsight. I wish he had. He was 83.Callas died Thursday at a hospice, according to his sons Mark Callas and Larry Callas. Callas was a rubber-faced, wiry framed comic whose rapid-fire delivery drew laughs and made him a frequent guest on variety and comedy shows. "Everybody that met him, he left them with a smile," Mark Callas said. For years, Charlie Callas made Johnny Carson laugh on the "Tonight Show." But Carson banned him from returning after Callas shoved Carson off his chair in a bid for laughs in 1982. Mark Callas said his father knew every member of the Rat Pack, a group of actors that included Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford. Callas toured with Sinatra and Tom Jones, had a role with Jerry Lewis in the movie "The Big Mouth" in 1967, and was a guest on TV variety shows hosted by Jackie Gleason, Ed Sullivan, Merv Griffin, Andy Williams and Flip Wilson. Callas guest-hosted on the "Joey Bishop Show." He also played restaurant owner Malcolm Argos in the 1970s TV series "Switch" with Robert Wagner and Eddie Albert, and had roles in Mel Brooks' films "High Anxiety" and "History of the World: Part I." He was 58. Manager Adam Parsons told the BBC that Moore was found dead Sunday at a hotel on Spain's Costa del Sol, where he was on holiday. The cause of death was not immediately known. Thin Lizzy drummer Brian Downey said Moore's death was a "total shock," and guitarist Scott Gorham said he was "a great player and a great guy." Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1952, Moore was a member of Dublin band Skid Row before joining Thin Lizzy in 1973, playing on tracks for the "Nightlife" album. He left after four months, but rejoined four years later and played on the band's "Black Rose" album before going solo once again. He had a successful solo career, and his accomplished, bluesy playing won plaudits from other musicians. Thin Lizzy had global hits in the 1970s with songs like "The Boys are Back in Town" and "Whiskey in the Jar." Frontman Phil Lynott died in 1986, but with a different lineup the band continues to tour today. Funeral details were not immediately available. This is very sad.
