Yea, enthusiasts bitch about the trim (I mean, those engineering types that designed it had no idea what they are doing, right ). But it's just a fun coaster that I could ride for lap after lap. Andersonville Man Dies After Riding Six Flags ‘Extreme’ Coaster An Andersonville man collapsed just moments after riding one of Six Flags Great America’s rollercoasters on Saturday. He later died at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, being ruled as a ‘natural death.’ The 50-year-old Scott Barnes, complained about being sick after leaving the rollercoaster named Superman: Ultimate flight. Soon after, he fell to the ground on the ramp that riders use to exit the ride. Barnes was attending the Great America’s yearly LGBT event “Out in the Park” with friends. The park’s communications manager, Tess Claussen, told the Tribune that the man collapsed Saturday evening in the walkway exiting the ride. She further added that there are warning signs posted near all ride locations warning people with medical conditions to be aware. The rollercoaster, which hurdles riders through twists and loops at over 50 miles per hour was shut down for a time during the incident. People experience ‘extreme’ forces when on the 115-foot tall steel coaster while flying face down and parallel to the track. The ride was introduced in 2003 and designed by the Swiss firm Bolliger & Mabillard. Barnes, an Indiana native, worked as a digital content specialist with the American Medical Association. His family will hold a visitation on Friday from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. at Geisen-Carlisle Funeral Home, 613 Washington in Michigan City, IN. His funeral will be held on Saturday. He was there for a "party" type of event, so narcotics being a factor is certainly plausible. I'm not sure we'll ever know, but its not unreasonable to consider, imo. I can say that I'm a proud member of that community and as a resident dj in boystown I can say just because you're a nightlife person doesn't mean you're like to party. It's funny how people think everyone that's gay automatically does drugs. I work at one of the most popular clubs in the country and you don't see that there. I really don't know what else to say. Don't put words in peoples mouths because you want to get offended by something that's not even there. I would have thought the same thing if it was a grad night, private party, etc. I am also a DJ and have worked in nightlife for over two decades. I know plenty of gay people and know plenty of them that don't do drugs or even drink for that matter. Literally no one said anything about anyone that is gay automatically doing drugs. This is about it being a party/nightlife event. When parks have events like this with DJs, dancefloors, additional bars set up on the midway, etc (whether or not its an LGBT event) there is absolutely a greater chance that guests may "indulge". bgtlover Posted September 14, 2017 Share Posted September 14, 2017 I am a same-sex loving individual and can say I "indulged" a couple times in my younger days (like 2002/03) on the unofficial gay day at Carowinds around pride time. Of course I would never do that now. I was in a different space back then and hadn't touched anything like that since. There were a few others that indulged as well that we knew, but the vast majority attending were clean & sober. Looking back it was pretty dumb, no matter how much fun I thought I had those days. I've seen plenty of gay people here and not one person has said anything negative towards them. This person's death is either health related or drug related obviously.. The ride itself didn't kill him. Not shocking or appalling that people would consider the possibility that he used drugs. Take an upper and your heart rate is off the charts. Get on a coaster and you're playing with fire. This would be true regardless of who you have sex with. It's funny how people think everyone that's gay automatically does drugs. I certainly understand your frustration. My apology was because my initial statement may have sounded harsh and may have offended or hurt someones feelings. I'm a gay guy. My statement came out of love, not condemnation or hate. This Pride event is marketed to the glbt community, with a big push towards the booze they offer. Which is perfectly fine. If people can have some drinks - or many - and be ok, then more power to them. Drugs or alcohol, it doesn't matter. Alcohol is a hard drug and kills more people than all illegal drugs combined. Alcoholism/drug addition abuse is very common in the glbt community. As a gay guy in recovery (I'm "clean and sober" from drugs - including the worst one I ever did and almost killed myself with - alcohol), I'm keenly aware of the issue first hand. It would be appalling and sad to NOT admit that the glbt community has a HUGE issue with addictions. And when I say addictions I'll confidently expand that to alcohol/drugs and what is usually at the core - depression/related illness. Every minority group has problems and we can't get better if we don't admit them. The gay community is well known to have over double the standard addiction rates. Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of glbt friends that have never touched a drink or drug. But I promise you, it's still a big issue. I had lunch with an old friend today, and he told me yet another one died. This guy couldn't keep sober so he finally finished the job himself... this happens way too much. It's natural to take offense when someone makes a blanket statement about a group. But the statement I made is coming from a gay person (me) who cares about his fellow brothers and sisters. It needs awareness and needs to be talked about. Addiction and abuse (and depression, etc. etc. etc.) do not make a person bad. They are illnesses that need to be addressed and hopefully treated. A few weeks ago, a friend who works for the group sponsoring "Pride Night" at Great America asked me if I was going. I said no, that I wasn't going to pay an extra $45 to watch a bunch gay men "act out" at Great America, in various states of intoxication... and that "I can see that at any bar at no extra cost." I base this speculation on the fact that his personal physician signed off on the death certificate as 'natural causes' right after the death, thus no autopsy or toxicology report will ever be performed...
