Airtime&Gravity
PORTLAND, Ore. -- A Portland mother shared her anger Sunday after her 11-year-old son brought home a Playboy poster from a school field trip. Kristine Severn said her son, Trevor, won the poster while playing a dart game last Friday on a field trip to Oaks Park, an amusement park in southeast Portland. When her son brought it home, she called Oaks Park and asked why an 11-year-old would be given the poster. Severn said she received the run-around and that Oaks Park told her that they do not run the games. "I wanted the poster only because of the rabbit," said Trevor Wilson, who won the Playboy poster. "I didn't want it because of what it symbolized." The poster of a Playboy bunny had no nudity and had the words "Members Only" on it, but Severn said she doesn't want her son exposed to what the poster represents. "There's too many things that happen too early for kids," Severn said. "That doesn't need to be encouraged." Phone calls to Oaks Park were not returned Sunday night. On Monday, Severn said a representative from Oaks Park called her and said they have removed all posters that could be considered inappropriate for children. cal1br3tto
I'm guessing this won't negatively affect my home park, especially since they completely resolved the issue. I do think it was an inappropriate prize. But isn't it possible that drawing attention to this issue and involving the kid might make Playboy more intriguing to him? Teacups Make Me Sick
People are so sensitive....what ever happened to the good 'ol days when people used to win cigarettes from boardwalk games (eh-hem...Seaside, NJ)?? If there was no naked chick....the kid probably thought it was cute b/c of the bunny. Orr...he was just telling that to his mom so that he doesn't get in trouble. netdvn
I remember reading this on CB not too long ago An 11 year old who doesn't know what Playboy is, must be heavily sheltered by his parents. Heck I was sheltered by my parents and I knew what Playboy was when I was 11. He probably knew what Playboy was and thought it would be fun to freak his parents out with the prize he got. Sometimes I think that kids these days have it so easy and other times I feel sorry for them for having to deal with overprotective, conservative parents that never let them have any fun. cal1br3tto
Or how about winning a real bunny? I always thought that would be neat, but so unethical. I'm sure there's been a protest somewhere. I know they used to give out fish and ducklings as well. I would guess you can still win goldfish, but I'm not sure about other animals. (I'm not referring specifically to Oaks Park in my post. I'm talking more about fair/carnival prizes.)
Carnage
Was there even a girl on the poster? I'd like to see the poster itself. It almost sounds to me like it was a poster of just the playboy bunny logo.
cal1br3tto
I got curious and googled [ playboy poster "members only" ]. The second result, an Ebay listing, might be it. (Sorry, I'm too lazy to try posting a picture for the first time, if it's even allowed.) If so, then it's quite simple. White on a black background. It doesn't actually look suggestive, but I can see where the just the brand could be offensive.

(I'm not referring specifically to Oaks Park in my post. I'm talking more about fair/carnival prizes.) My county fair (Christian County IL) had bunnies as prizes from the late 80's until I stopped going in 2003. They might even still do it. They also had fish you could win and baby ducks. They also had a betting game where you would put a quarter on a color. Then they would spin a giant circle and place a rat in the center. Whatever color the rat ran into won a prize. cal1br3tto
Wow, that rat game sounds a bit...disturbing for some reason. Also, I'd rather win the rat itself as a prize! My mom's family won a duckling once, and later we found a book about a duck who could've been his brother, or cousin, or at least from the same duck farm, since he was also a prize at a fair around the same time and place. SimpTwister
I don't think the mom should have objected because the prize was suggestive - she should have objected because it's ghetto! It's sad to see parks in 2009 giving out the same trashy prizes they were giving out at the crappiest fairs and carnivals 20 and 30 years ago. I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that they also have Lynyrd Skynyrd mirrors and Harley-Davidson 'tapestries.' And roach clips with big, colorful feathers. - Simp "loves amusement parks, hates ghetto-a$$ carnivals and everything about them" Twister
tanthonyam
Since when do 11 year olds use the word SYMBOLIZED?
Crazy_Behemoth_Lady_Jess
This is kinda ridiculous... I knew what Playboy was when I was 11, not that I had any interest in it or anything. Not from TV or magazines, but from just listening to other people talk. Was there even a girl on the poster? I'd like to see the poster itself. It almost sounds to me like it was a poster of just the playboy bunny logo. No there was no girl on the poster. It's just the Playboy bunny logo that says "Members Only" as already mentioned. ~ Jess "Knows that miday games give out more than just stuffed animals" Chan
moinab
Way to overreact, lady. Now, this poor kid will probably be teased relentlessly by his peers for a.) having a prude mom who would not only call to complain about something so piddly, but also go to the media about it, and b.) saying that he just wanted it for the bunny. scooterdoug
^^^That was my first thought. I'm thinking that mom coached her son on what to say. I mean, I've worked in plenty of elementary schools, and no kids that age readily use the word "symbolize". -Doug "Suddenly wants that poster" Heim
Crazy_Behemoth_Lady_Jess
Well the park shouldn't be giving away Playboy posters in the first place. There could be other kids like him that want it "just for the bunny" and think it's cute. Good for them for no longer giving away the posters. netdvn
Since when do 11 year olds use the word SYMBOLIZED? I knew what symbolized meant when I was 11. ^ I don't think an 11 year old would want a prize with the Playboy bunny on it "just because its cute". And I'm not that surprised that these parks give away adult-themed prizes because they want to appeal to the older set as well as the younger set. I'm pretty sure they had other "age appropriate" prizes that would appeal to an 11 year old, but he didn't want them. I said this once and I'm gonna say it again. The 11 year old probably picked this prize to freak his parents, or maybe he did it on a dare, or maybe he wanted to look cool in front of his friends. DarkStitch626
People are so sensitive.... LOL Never let that kids mom visit London. Women walk the street naked there for "art" purpose and among other things of course. Children are exposed to these things in middle school during computer class if they are given the internet for like 2 seconds. Atleast unlike a few select parks they returned her call, and actually took the posters down as asked, not many out there would due to "business it business". sam06pr
Big deal. The kid obviously did not know what it symbolized, His mom just exposed that to him. And sooner or later he will be exposed, is normal kids are growing much faster these days anyways.

(I'm not referring specifically to Oaks Park in my post. I'm talking more about fair/carnival prizes.) Some years back as part of their "remembering the past" series our local newspaper showed an old photo of the midway of our local county fair taken in 1958. Looking at the pic I noticed a game in the background that was giving away as prizes..LIVE CATS !! If that wasn't bad enough..the sign above this game spelled in these big letters "P*SSY" . Have no idea what the game was about muchless how to win those cats but it was kinda funny seeing that pic in the paper now. I guess the paper "censors" were outside taking a smoke break. I do remember as a little girl visiting the Shenandoah County Fair in Woodstock, VA and watching on stage with my parents this woman dancing to a disco song ( Leo Sayer's You Make Me Feel Like Dancing )..oh yeah she was covered with LIVE TARANTULAS..and this was located next to the fair's kiddieland too. I think I would have rather seen the Playboy bunny that this. Live tarantulas? Cats as prizes? Can't do any of that today without someone somewhere getting their dander up. coolhandluke
I'm guessing this is what the poster was, or something similar: I can't say I blame the mom for calling the park, as I wouldn't really want my 5th grader walking home with a Playboy poster as a prize. But I agree that it could have been worse. And I'm sure the mom would agree as well. At least the matter was resolved fairly quietly. Except for those crazy enthusiasts online who give it much more attention and discuss it in much more detail than it deserves...

We have plenty of "artful"/political statement nudity here as well. ^That was my guess as well. I wonder if the actual poster won was shown in the video segment to the original story (I didn't watch it). ^^Everything you described in your post is just completely disturbing. Wow. Fun stuff!
