Stratosphere's New 'Ride'

Recommended Posts

I have to say, I have finally watched the videos on that site and there is absolutly no **** in hells chance you would get me on that ride, without a shadow of a doubt that would be my idea of a knightmare.....I get nervous just watching that!!!!

350ft Giant Drop Freefall, not a problem, leaving my life in the hands of a metal cable and making myself walk off a stupidly tall building......never gonna happen!!!!!!!

I'm mixed on this thing. If the price is right, I'd do it. Would pay $50-$75 for it, but not much more than that. Honestly though, I don't think it's worth $100.

It's a "controlled" fall, not a true "freefall". You're travelling down slower than the speed of gravity, that's the difference. You would be thrilled and scared, but wouldn't have as much of that true stomach in your throat feeling. That's what really sets SCAD Towers apart from anything else. It's just you, nothing at all holding you in place, dropping 150ft through the air. Biggest rush of my life and WELL worth the $25 I paid for it at the Dells.

Check out the one at the Macau Tower, that actually looks like a real free fall with nothing more than guide wires to keep you from smashing against the tower. This looks like you're attached to an elevator cable and lowered down beside a building. I'm sure it would be a thrill but it's like taking the bacon from a blt. Dare I say it, it's almost boring. Especially when compared to the old fashioned rubber band jumps. Just let people fall.

Oh, and check out the online video of the bungee out of a helicopter. Now that would make me lose a few fluids.

  • 5 months later...

Staff has not been given an opening date for the new attraction yet.

I know the OP said there was no opening date, but they also said employees were told...

construction on the newest ride for Stratosphere will begin this month.

... and that was back in June, so I was just wondering if anything had happened yet.

There was never an announcement from Stratosphere, and based on what themeparkman25 said it sounds like construction hasn't begun, so it looks like this project is delayed at best.

I see the tower erryday and they havent done anything visible to the tower since the announcement.

There have been many projects that have been announced over the years that have yet to come to fruition (even before the economy tanked). Thus, most locals tend to be skeptical till its actually open...por ejemplo CityCenter. Even though they start building it or even complete something, doesnt necessarily mean it will open.

As much as I love roller coasters, I am scared of heights like this. Going off the edge of a building... idk. my honest to God reaction would probably be to cry... knowing it'd be safe, yet still going through with it. I'd be trembling! That is an insane idea! Very cool... not at all for the faint of heart. I've gotten anxious just thinking about doing X-Scream or Insanity before. yikes!

http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2009/dec/17/new-thrill-ride-planned-atop-stratosphere/

The Stratosphere is looking to add a new attraction atop its observation deck for the ultimate thrill seeker.

It’s called Sky Jump and it’s more like bungee jumping than a ride. The attraction’s Web site describes Sky Jump as “base jumping while attached to a wire.”

A similar attraction in New Zealand features an 11-second free fall of 629 feet.

American Casinos & Entertainment, which owns the Stratosphere, said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday that $3.6 million of its $22 million 2010 capital expenditure budget would be allocated for the Sky Jump.

A spokesman for the Stratosphere said the property plans to make an official announcement on the attraction early next year, pending approval from the proper entities.

City of Las Vegas spokesman Jace Radke said the Stratosphere will need to file plans with the city’s building and safety department, as well as get a building permit, certification and annual inspection, which the Stratosphere has yet to do. The process could take weeks, Radke said.

The cost of New Zealand’s Sky Jump is $140 per jump. Prices for the Stratosphere’s three existing rides — Big Shot, X-Scream and Insanity, the Ride — cost $30 for an all-day pass.
