Most Under-rated Dark Ride

Recommended Posts

I'm just interested in seeing what people think is the most under-rated dark ride at any amusement/theme park (anywhere in the world).

For instance:

Dinosaur... Animal Kingdom at Disney World Orlando.

There's never a line, yet its awesome!

Pinocchio's Daring Journey at DL. Never a line and such a great ride! Also Yosemite Sam's something Adventure (or something like that) at SFoT. It was fun (albeit a little old and basic, but still classic) and I had never heard anything about it.

Reese's Extreme Cup Challenge!

I had never heard any positive reviews of the ride, and the only shoot-em-up dark ride I had experienced before this was Gobbler Getaway at Holiday World, so needless to say, I was SHOCKED when I got off RECC.

With the humorous narration, coaster-like track layout, and fun competition between Team Chocolate and Team Peanut-butter, this is definitely one underrated dark ride.

Haunted Barrel Works, Centreville Amusement Park, Toronto Islands, ON

Stillwalk Manor, Casino Pier, Seaside Heights, NJ

Whacky Shack, Waldameer, Erie, PA (borderline underrated)

The Underground, Adventureland, Des Moines, IA (never been to Adventureland but POVs of this ride have intrigued me to say that it's a possible gem)

^Six Flags actually has many dark rides, and to my knowledge, all are impressive!

Scooby Doo and the Spooky Swamp (SFStL) is a great ride, and from what I remember, Monster Plantation (SFOG) was pretty good, as well. I'm sure it's even better now, after the update.

I think that mainly has to do with the ride's reputation...stories of crying little kids leaving the attraction have traveled fast, ever since it first opened as Countdown to Extinction.

One ride I'd like to add is The Great Movie Ride at Disney Hollywood Studios, or whatever it's called now. No one ever talks about it anymore, but back in the day it was quite an ambitious, and impressive project. I think if they gave it a little more TLC (and perhaps a major rehab), it could really stand out again.

My vote goes to Sindbad's Storybook Adventures at Tokyo DisneySea. No one talks about this ride much, but it's an excellent example of what a Disney dark ride is all about (right down to its catchy, even in Japanese, theme song).

Gobler Getaway - It's like a Thanksgiving acid drip!

Scooby Doo's Haunted Castle - It's really an impressive ride. I completely forgot about it! I need to visit it more often...

Indiana freakin' Jones!!!! When I went to DL, I hadn't heard a thing about this ride! I was soooo impressed with it. I couldn't believe such an AMAZING ride was packed so tightly away inside the park. I was blown away!

Movie World Australia's Looney Tunes River Ride. - So basically, you get in a boat and are transported to Hollywood through a hole in the floor or something?

Nights in White Satin-the trip...

Absolutely the greatest idea for a dark ride ever. I'm not exactly sure how they got away with it, plus its set to an incredible (and obvioulsy very trippy) song. I would almost go back to that park just for that ride.

Also, I don't know if it's technically under rated, but MIB Alien Attack is easily my favorite. I could ride that for hours straight. I am so determined to reach the elusive 999,999.

I agree with Chuck in regards to Sinbad's Storybook Voyage at DisneySea. We walked around for four days singing the only English part of the ride's song. "The compass of my heart!" That ride really blew me away and IMO is one of Disney's finest dark rides. (I was surprised because no matter how busy the park was, it was a walk on!)

Zach I agree with the Looney Tunes River Ride in Movie World Australia. My only complaint was that the ride lasted a bit too long, but it was quite an elaborate experience, like just about everything else at that park.

It may look cool, but it is a HUGE dissapointment when you ride it. It just meanders along its course and the story is boring.

Haunted Mansion in Rehoboth gets my vote. I think the only reason its underrated though is not at a popular park or beach for that matter. It is pretty old, but they take very good care of it and it has some pretty good surprises.

Wacky Shack (Waldameer) - Such a fun ride. typically everything works and 2 level dark rides are the best.

Ghost Hunt (Compounce) - My favorite shooter with the exception of Men in Black (which I would not consider underrated). Good audio and light effects.

Horror Hotel (Pavillion/Defunct) - The only Non-Disney dark ride I have experienced that really had that "in a house" feeling. Also, bonus points for being 2 levels.

Most overrated ...

Laffland (Sylvan) - The facade is nice, but the ride was .... well .... dark.

^^I missed the Rehoboth haunted-house ride the last time I was in the area, but I agree with Larry about Trimper's--a very good, traditional haunted house. Both are a bit off the beaten path.

^Yeah, I wouldn't exactly call MIB "underrated"--it's excellent and has been recognized as such.
