TheHulk
Earlier I got back from the Florida International Air Show, which was held for two days. Saturday (the 21st) and Sunday (the 22nd). I went to Sunday's, and there was quite a bit of wind. Therefore, the jumpers in the parachutes and smoke cancelled their jump. There was still a guy with a handglider though...and he flew it paralized from the waist down. It's always great to see people like that doing things some people say they can't. Anywho, this is my first trip report, and of course, the camera had to spaz out on me and run low on it's batteries. Therefore, some of the pictures had these red spots on them, and I had to edit them out with photoshop. One picture in here isn't edited because you can still see what it is pretty well...and I got lazy after so many pictures. LOL! Not all the pics turned out like that, just a little less than half. Now on another note, I have more pictures and video on a seperate camera, and I already tore up my room looking for the cable to that thing. So....I'll post those later on once I find the cable. Those pics and videos include the Blue Angels, so they'll have to wait. Negative or positive, keep pulling those G's! One of the guns on Panchito Everyone's favorite, the bombs in the bomb bay of Panchito. This one was signed by some veterens who worked on the B-25. I'll show a bit more of Panchito...once I find that stupid camera cord. Then there's the F5 fighter, they were getting this and a second one tugged out to the taxi way so they could fly back home. The Alabama Boys threw out the comedy as a pilot flew this plane around...and even landed it on a platform sitting on top of a pickup. In crosswinds! Vertical dive Oh yes, the jets. Personal favorite of mine. First in line is the P-51 Mustang, followed by the F-16 fighting falcon, and the F-15 Eagle. Yes, I know the P-51 isn't a jet. Johnny, turn ya smoke on! Who doesn't love it when a plane dives down and comes close to the ground? Goin' up! The older aircraft got their chance in the sky as well. Not much to see with the planes edge on, just mostly smoke for the pic. Of course, the personal aircraft need to feel the love as well. This Cessna wanted its close up. More for the instrument panel junkies out there. These are the controls to one of the aerobatic planes. Even though we've already been introduced to the C-130 what would a Florida Air Show be without hurricane hunter? As you can see with the flag, winds were gusty. Notice anything different than the older C-130s and non hurricane hunters? In case you wanted to know, yes, these are the hurricane hunters. Says it right on the tail. For all you instrument panel fans out there.... Let's not forget other countries either. No fake here! An actual F-16 that'll look fake in the next shot. And the wings fold on this one for those Hollywood shots of a wrecked aircraft. Get to the choppa! Also shown is the refueling boom. One of my favorite shots, the rotors for the heli. Yea, this one was kinda edited crappy as you can see at the back of the helicopter. Better than a bunch of red spots. Not to mention this thing was a monster up close. And here's that pic I didn't bother editing. You can see how the camera screwed it up, but it's an inside view through the back of that helicopter shown in the next pic. paintballer
Shweet! Nice to know theres another plane junkie out there. Now whats this about the '16s wings folding?
TheHulk
Shweet! Nice to know theres another plane junkie out there. Now whats this about the '16s wings folding? Â Seriously, I have no idea. All they said through the commentary about this perticular F-16 was that its wings fold to make it looked like a wrecked plane for Hollywood scenes. I know they do in fact fold up though, saw 'em like that as we were leaving the place.
BeemerBoy
^ I'm fairly certain that particular F-16 Thunderbird is a decommishioned plane that they now use for static displays. I'm pretty sure I remember seeing that same plane at the 2001 Fort Lauderdale Air & Sea Show. The wings were altered in order to essentially fold the plane up and haul it from city to city. I think they were messing with you a bit with that "Hollywood crash scene stuff." Â Anyhow, nice first report. Â <----- Big Blue Angels fan. AllenA07
I always thought the foldable wings were so the plane was easier to store on aircraft carriers.
BeemerBoy
^ That's true in the case of some fighters such as the F-18. But I don't believe the F-16 was designed like that. And on this particular example, you can tell by the hinges that this was just a low level modification. If there's a military aircraft enthusiast out there, please feel free to correct me on that one, but I'm pretty certain about it.
mcjaco
It's been awhile since I considered myself a full fledged military aviation enthusiast, but I believe all F-16s have foldable wings. Â I'll have to look at my "library" when I get home.
mrhambone
Interesting about the F-16 with the folding wings - thought only Naval aircraft had the folding wings. Could this one be a static display, and the wings fold to get it into a trailer? Â Â Funny story - Flew off of an aircraft aboard a C-2 Greyhound for Ft Lauderdale. As we taxied up to the terminal for charter flights after landing, the pilot folded the wings back. Got off the plane, there was a family with a little girl in tears. As I walked by I heard the little girl tell her Mom that she didn't want to fly on that plane because the wings were broken! In the terminal I asked our pilot why he folded the wings - his response was "To get a better parking space."
mcjaco
^ Most military aircraft have foldable wings, not just the Navy. You can cram more into a smaller area. Â Although it looks like I was wrong. I swear I'd seen other 16s with foldable wings.... Â
TheRapidsNerd
I always thought F-16's had wings that didn't fold up. Hey, it's all good, and whether it's Thunderbirds or Blue Angels (yes I like both) you're in for a bloody good show.
paintballer
I've done some research and it turns out there was a small project by Locheed that tried to make the 16 a carrier bird. The project was scrapped because the 16 just didn't have the right thrust to weight ratio to make it off the carriers catapult runway.... Weird huh?
