My Comic Strip- Rib Roast

Awesome! Your strips are hilarious...

#1 reminds me of my 3 y/o nephew. So demanding, it drives me nuts.

#2 overall funny

#3 is possibly my favorite of the three. I totally remember seeing those on TV around 9-10 years ago and now I've got the jingle stuck in my head.

More Fun Than a Pillow Fight, that commercial was amazing, especially during captain planet(how many people actually know what that is anymore?) anyway, these comics are amazing. You should show people TPR, because I dont think you've gotten a single bad review. If you ever get a comic book published I will totally buy it.

Ok, so I haven’t gotten as many done as I promised, but in case you caught some of the drama in my White City/ Willow Grove PTR, I'm having some trouble concentrating, and just getting strips done period. I have a bunch that I half finished, so I should be able to get those done quick over the next few days.

Now, I have five strips until I can mail the packages. The problem with these is that I need them to show certain characters or interactions between different characters that I haven’t shown yet. For instance the following two strips were meant to show Peter and Hunter interacting with their teachers. I have most of the 5 strips planned out except for one which I’m having a great deal of trouble writing, since it involves Hunter’s actual mom, not Janet (Aunt Janet).

Well, enough talking, this is what you really care about:

Hunter's Tweety Bird question is something that's always boggled my mind.

  • 2 weeks later...

So I managed to finish three strips today, however I've been working on all of them for a while before. Theirs been too much stuff this week for me to really concentrate on completing the package, but the good news is I only need two more strips and a cover letter before I can send it in, so probably within the next 3 or 4 days I will be mailing!

Two of the following strips have new characters in them, because I need to show certain aspects of the strip to give an overall view of my strip’s potential to the syndicates. I sort of feel I force wrote these instead of letting the jokes natural come to me (which usually are funnier), so I’m not sure how funny these ones are. I’m most concerted about the one with the bottle rocket because I feel it’s lacking a real puchline. If you feel any of these are stupid or unfunny don’t be afraid to tell me. I wouldn’t be mad.

^It’s funny, I originally wrote that strip more than a year ago with only the first two panels. I couldn’t think of an ending I just drew a sketch of Hunter kicking the doll house and laughing at the dolls “dying”. That strip didn’t have a punch line until about a week ago.

Ok, so here are the last two strips of my syndicate package. I printed out everything today and wrote the cover letter. Now the only thing left to do is go to the post office tomorrow.

Then I’ll just have to wait for a reply. Problem is that I’ll probably be on the West Coast tour then.

For anyone interested, this is what my cover letter says:

As a whole, Rib Roast is about life with dysfunctional and high-maintenance people, however in the case of this strip, these people are depicted as anthropomorphic pigs rather than humans. Although all human characters are pigs, the jokes rarely revolve around that fact, rather dealing with mischief, antics, articulations and arguments between different characters. The fact that the obnoxious five-year-old Hunter can never learn from his foolish mistakes only makes it more impacting when he tries to blame someone else or threatens to take legal action. Peter, the older character, manipulates or annoys people with his moody, smart-aleck personally and abuses his easily-taken-advantage-of friend, Tyler, who has respect from virtually nobody. Janet is Peter’s mom, however she also watches after her sister’s children, Hunter and Janine while her sister works a full time job. This complication is what allows Hunter to get away with much more than he could with a structured, functional mother. Finally there is Ricky the Dog, who has to watch and endure life with the people around him, however earns his respect using mostly his teeth, or occasionally a bat. Ricky is an independent thinker and does allot more than others can acknowledge when they aren’t around to see.

I have been a devoted cartoonist since a young age and have practice pen and ink drawing over the years. Rib Roast is an evolution of some of these earlier cartoon attempts. Several of the Rib Roast Sunday cartoons have been printed in the high school publication “The Springfield Chronicle” and after only one year of running, Rib Roast was awarded first prize in the state of Pennsylvania PSNE Keystone Scholastic awards for Cartoon/Graphic Illustration. A copy of the certificate can be seen in the back of this submission.

Rib Roast has been in the works for over a year and a half now, as I have been developing both the art and the writing since I decided upon making comic strip features. I keep a journal of possible gags for each strip and have many other finished strips which I can send upon your request.

------------------

I am still going to make some more cartoons in the meantime, however I also have to do allot of paintings and artwork for my college portfolio.

Stay tuned.....

Good luck, Josh! I don't know how easy the syndicates have it anymore, what with the shrinking number of newspapers and newspaper budgets, but I certainly enjoy the strip.

Are you aware of www.dummcomics.com? It's a group of animators who started their own Web comics site last year. They've gone through a couple artist changes lately, but I consistently enjoy their stuff more than what's in my local paper anymore ("Oh look, Garfield squished a spider!" "Beetle Bailey sure is lazy!" "Hey! Marmaduke's sitting in the big chair again!"). If your syndicate hopes don't work out the first time around, they have guest spots over there, and based on the comments I've seen, it's not a bad way to gain exposure.

For the record, I'm a big Kimbo fan.

^ Thanks. That's a cool site. I really liked the artwork and I could tell it was made by professional animators. That’s cool because I’m planning on going into that field after college. I'll definitely have to look into that if I don't get accepted, but for now I'm just passing time until I get a reply (not to mention passing time to get to the West Coast trip. )

I guess I'll just have to see what happens. If I do get accepted, I'm going to be very, very busy next year, seeing how long it took me to finish these 30 or so strips, however a good sign was today after being relived from all the pressure to get this in ASAP, I just sat down an knocked out two more dailies without even thinking about it. (I'm still finishing the second on the computer so I’ll post tomorrow.)
