Music, Music, Music

I just don't like indie music. I also hate how real talent is being replaced by computers (see dubstep, rap, and most pop artists). Bands like Rush (who still sounds great live even though the guys are 60), Evanescence (whose lead singer is one of the last women whose natural voice is the one heard on the albums and concerts), aren't as popular as the artists who really have no talent at all.

You can't really call bands like RUSH and Evanescence "unpopular" when they already have a relatively large fanbase and still get airplay on radio stations. Sure they're not as popular with todays teens so you're not gonna hear either band on a top 40s station (unless they play older top 40s hits), but you can't say they're unpopular.

Nothing wrong with moving "talent" to computers. There are plenty of talented electronic artists out there that pump out great music. They're just using a different medium from regular instruments.

That's just 2 bands. Shinedown, Halestorm, Saliva, Alter Bridge Thousand Foot Krutch, And RED are some of the best rock bands out there but almost nobody's heard of them because of the musical trends. The great bands aren't getting the recognition or fanbase they deserve and it's saddening.

The problem with Shinedown is that I heard a live version of "Second Chance" and it sounded pretty bad. Maybe it was because there wasn't any energy on the chorus, but I don't know. And I wouldn't say no one has heard of Shinedown. "Second Chance" achieved mainstream success on both rock radio and the mainstream radio. So, yeah, rock musicians use stuff like that. I mean, "Come Sail Away" by Styx prominently features the synthesizer and it sounds great.

Also, on a somewhat unrelated note, I believe that country musicians and classical musicians deserve the most credit. Country musicians sounds amazing live and amazing in studio with nearly no change, if any at all. Classical musicians do not use electric instruments in any way, which is what makes them, in my opinion, more TALENTED than rock musicians, but not necessarily better sounding, IMO. It all depends on what you enjoy.

Thousand Foot Krutch is the least known of the bands I listed, but IMO they are the best. I've seen their live DVD, they sound almost exactly the same live as they do in the studio. Their music has an awesome beat and almost every song makes you want to move, they combine a little bit of rapping really well, and they have some of the most positive messages of any rock band.

Most older indie rock from the 80's don't use techno, and have much more history than Evanescence. Don't get me wrong, I used to love Evanescence in 06. Going Under was the first song I ever downloaded on my I-Pod. I really liked their fallen album, and I still like metal. It's nice to listen to some music that doesn't scream 24/7, or get all heavy.

I also just recently found this new song which has an instrumental :

There are plenty of bands out there that are talented musically, but don't have much recognition. That's just how things are. No matter how much recognition a band recieves, there will always be other bands that are more popular, regardless of talent (unless they're the most popular band in the land).

In the end, it doesn't matter what instruments you use, it matters how you use them. Like I said, there are plenty of VERY talented electronic composers out there. There are people that can produce better music in Mario Paint than people with actual instruments.

There's some bands that use synthesizers that I like. Within Temptation's newest album uses some synthesizer and it sounds amazing for a "pop" metal style. I like their older gothic stuff like their album The Heart of Everything much better though.

And ^, Within Temptation and Epica are really good, Amaranthe and Lacuna Coil are decent. Epica is the only band out there where I can tolerate the growling, which I usually hate.

Cool, Clockwork Angels is the first album of theirs I have bought aside from a £3 best of from my local supermarket, so now I am working backwards through their discography! Not too keen on Vapor Trails though, it's a little too rough and ready!

They are on tour in the UK in may, so I am hoping to get to a show.

I love Mika. Love the songs he wrote. Lyrics are great.

Grace Kelly (excerpts):

I guess I'm a little bit shy

Why don't you like me?

Why don't you like me without making me try?

I try to be like Grace Kelly But all her looks were too sad

So I tried a little Freddie I've gone identity mad!

Should I bend over?

Should I look older

just to be put on your shelf?

Say what you want to satisfy yourself, hey!

But you only want what everybody else Says you should want, you should want

Lonely Alcoholic (excerpts):

you're a lonely alcoholic with a tendency to wine

well you speak it and you drink it and bore us all the time

say you drink out of your sorrow for you've got no one to love

but tell me who could cuddle up to a lonely alcoholic

My favorite band, Red, released their 4th album, Release The Panic, earlier today. Honestly it's a disappointment. Anthony and Randy Armstrong said it was going to be their heaviest yet, and it is, but they changed their style. I was optimistic that it would be for the better, but it isn't as good as their older albums. Maybe it's the fact that they got a new producer than they had for the last 3, or maybe it was just some experimenting, or both. The most disappointing thing is the fact that they got rid of the string orchestra they had for their earlier albums and replaced it with electronic stuff. But don't think I'm bashing the album, because I do like it, it's just my least favorite from them. I'd probably give it a 6.5 or 7 out of 10.

Maybe not the most musically talented fellows, but one of my favorite bands(maybe even becoming my favorite band) is Masked Intruder... and I am probably the only person on TPR who knows about them... at least one of the few. Anyway they are a "modern" pop punk band taking ques from some great bands like The Ergs, Screeching Weasel, and The Queers. Anyway I am posting this here because they were signed today by Fatrecords... aka Fat Mike from NOFX's label featuring some of the best in punk rock. Please please please give these guys a listen... they are TONS OF FUN and smiling and air guitar/finger drumming are 100% guaranteed.

Check em out here... not the entire album or anything but 25 to life and Heart Shaped Guitar are on here and in my opinion they are the two best songs on the album. maskedintruder.bandcamp.com/album/masked-intruder Give em a listen and remember... support local music/your scene!

PUNK WILL NEVER DIE!

I'll give them a listen for sure. It's been a long while since I have listened to some good punk rock music. Oi Polloi, Antischism, Aus-Rotten, and Toy Dolls; all really good 80's punk that I used to love. I even liked some punk from the 90's; Leftover Crack, and even some Anti-Flag. You just brought back a flood of memories. I may have evolved my punk rock taste, but you're right, Punk NEVER dies.

Now a days, I find myself listening to much softer music. I'm listening to The Avett Brothers, Famous Flower of Manhattan.

^^^ I dig it! Though I'd expect it to have a bit more oomph given the power of the instruments, the singer's not bad, and it comes together pretty well.

I'm sure I've brought these guys up in this thread before, but I think you'd like Cobra Skulls. They're punk as well, but with a more political/rebellious edge and a more traditionally punk singer. All their albums are on Spotify, but here's one of my favorite songs of theirs:
