coasterdude5
It's funny, until today I hadn't heard of microbursts. I knew of straight-line winds, though.
terrancew_hod
Yeah, but a microburst it still pretty intense. One time we had one that downed a tree as thick as my car and my neighbor never found his grill. My pool was black at the bottom due to leaf coverage and a branch crushed my other neighbor's car. I also had a tornado touch down two houses away from mine, but it was only an F1 or something. It went down my street and I saw it. We didn't have any power in the house and I had no idea there was a tornado warning in effect. It was cool. So I've had my experiences with intense storms. Everybody's battening down the hatches but me, I'm not scared.  Well luckily, you'll be fast asleep when the storm comes running through, so I guess the argument is moot. I doubt you'll be running around outside at 3am, so I guess that's a good thing. And now with it running at 33mph, it will be out of your area in no time. It may be waking you up about now though.  But it's no fun when you have 70+MPH winds howling for hours and you hear lightning taking out the transformers then you hope the roof doesn't fly off because the windows sound like they're about to blow out. Then you have to make the plan to run downstairs into the small bathroom if the roof comes off because that becomes the safest place in the house.  Terry
Kalepi_Konei
^ So true, I remember during a hurricane my mom shoved me and my sister in the closet (hallway closet) and put a metal lock on it so we couldn't open it because our house was bout to blow down! It was one of the scariest experiences of my life. Even a tropical storm is no laughing matter it can cause ALOT of damage, that's why my school was closed during Fay. It may sound small, but the small things add up fast!
krazekiddd
So apparently I have two neighbors that have put up their hurricane shutters. No idea why since the storm is clearly hitting Cuba and going south. Hrmm, maybe they went to the future and know something we don't? Â I would give them the benefit of the doubt, however, I see no need for them to do that when the Broward County EOC clearly said not to for the past several days being that it is a fire hazard and all. terrancew_hod
^Maybe they're leaving town for a while. Â My roommate is upset because he wanted to get Monday and Tuesday off for the hurricane since he works for Miami-Dade. Â "Hush your mouth." was what I told him. I want to have the day off too, but not like that! Â Terry
astroworldfan1
Hey Guys! Â I survived Gustav, and I will post pictures of what happened around my house/damage. It's great to be able to be back on TPR! Â -Tatum
Hikaru-chan
Ugh gas is down to $100 a gallon but gas is going to $4! What's even funnier to me is the pres. put a state wide alert for his home state but didn't do it for the midwest floods and Katrina? My mom keeps telling me to watch for the bald guy on the tv, bad things are coming.
spaceace12
With the midwest floods in June, there wasn't really a big warning, I went to bed the night before with wet pavement, and 4 hours later I had a island as a apt. And the midwest floods were spread out not all over .

astroworldfan1
Here are some photos of the damage to my house. Â -Tatum The wind blew my Kiddie Playhouse thingy down and into the neighbor's yard! Here is the other down powerline towards the front of the street. We also set up Direct TV to keep us occupied! Right after Gustav hit, my family got hungry, so we started to make a Spagetti! Yum! We needed a new fence, it was 20 years old. I'm surprised it took this long for it to fall down! Our fence fell down. Just look at all those shingles on the grass. I still never picked 'em up yet! We lost the tree that was planted when I was born. That tree was 14 years old, and held a special place in my heart. You can see 1 of the 2 down power lines on my street. Closeup on roof damage. You can see here that there are a lot of branches/leaves in our front lawn. Â See that Birdbath with the three ducks in it? That never fell down during Gustav! Amazing! Here is the damage to our roof. We lost about 85% of the shingles on the front of the house!
Kalepi_Konei
^ Man when Charley came threw it was KILLER picking up all those shingles. EXTREMELY IMPROTANT NOTE: PICK UP THE SHINGLES WITH GLOVES ON! You will really hurt yourself if you don't.
astroworldfan1
^ Thanks for the heads up! I probably won't do it tho. I'll have the yard man do it! Â -Tatum
Kalepi_Konei
^ Pshh. Lazy son of a...oooh dinners done gotta go. Â Nah, just messing with ya, but at this point people are probably going to be hiring lawn people to do there lawns, heck I wish I was there to start a hurricane clean up service I made BIG bucks doing that when the 2004 storms came through, I charged 10 dollars front yard for shingle clean up and depending on the backyard size it was 10-25 dollars. And since they were duplexes I had DOUBLE the chance of making good money!
astroworldfan1
^Good idea! You deserve a cookie! Â -Tatum
coasterdude5
What was left of Ike came through Memphis earlier and it took down a tree at my grandma's house. The other half of the tree. Pwnage. Well I know what I'll be doing for the rest of the day!
Kalepi_Konei
^ I read the other half of the tree thing and was thinking of the other white meat! Oh that gave me a good laugh...sorry bout the tree though. Â ^ Good idea, you deserve a cookie! Â I've got cookies bitch...I've got cookies... Â Nah, but if you do do it don't charge 25 dollars per backyard do it more of like 20 bucks whole house because the way the economy is, that's just taking advantage, and I kinda felt really bad for doing it.... astroworldfan1
^ I'm far too lazy to do that. I already have a job at a resturant as a cashier. Oh well, I can sell that idea to someone and make money! Â -Tatum
terrancew_hod
I had some pictures of when Katrina and Wilma blew through. Katrina knocked down trees but we had our power on afterwards so we were fine. There wasn't as much damage with Wilma but we didn't have power for a week! After about 2 days, we went the airport and flew to New York for the weekend. I had a LED belt buckle that I programmed to say various hurricane related sayings... some them very naughty. Subsequently I had a very good weekend! Â Terry
Moose
With Irene projected to hit much of the Eastern Seaboard of the US , I figured it was as good as time as any to bump this thread. Â What are you doing for to prepare? Post pictures (stay safe getting them). Or tell us your gripes and Rants. Â Â Persoanally I stopped construction on enclosing my porch (no use putting in more windows that could be broken) and will put all the misc yard stuff into the garage. I alwas have canned food and bottled water in case of zombies butbill prob make some extra ice to keep food cold if we lose power.
osm
Well I live in NY and am on vacation in Michigan at the moment, and I'm scheduled to come back on Sunday. So my mom has decided that it would be a great idea to come back before the hurricane hits instead of after, for some unfathomable reason. I just have to hope that all the flights today and tomorrow are fully booked, or someone talks her out of it.
Moose
^ Homeatly I would do the same. That way you'd be at home rather than Michigan if air travel shuts down.
cfc
We're under a "tropical storm warning" in Williamsburg for tomorrow. The last big hit we had was Isabel back in 2003. It was quite a mess. I lost power in my neighborhood for five days. BGW had to hurry and stash all their Howl-o-Sceam decorations indoors and had about 120 trees down over their train tracks. Â The 'Burg is in kind of a weird spot for hurricanes. Usually, people get worked up and nothing much happens--but Isabel was an exception. As for Irene, I guess we'll know soon enough. I have some canned soup, crackers, Nutri Grain bars, and a camp stove (if I can just remember where I put the damned thing), just in case.
osm
Well it looks like we're waiting for it to end here in Michigan, my parents changed their minds. If air travel shuts down, my dad has done the drive from Detroit to New York before, though I hope it doesn't come to that for his sake.
VinTheAttendant
Tomorrow, I'll be heading from "Tropical Storm Watch" north Connecticut to "Hurricane Warning" Philadelphia. I think I'm going to have a fun weekend
