Poker Players

Recommended Posts

Did a search, and the only thing that came up was poker meet up's online.

I didn't know if I should continue that one (Which was in 2005) or not. Since this is a different subject...

Anyone here also like poker? My favorite poker game is Texas Hold'em.

If you do like poker, what are some of the best hands you've ever got? Do you like to play in casino's, online, with friends, or against family?

I play online sometimes, and with family.

Anyone else?

Best hand I have ever had is a straight flush to the 8 of spades.

I only play with friends, never online. I don't see the point of online play unless it is to practice. It gets rather boring if there is nothing at stake and when playing for money online I don't trust it. You could be playing against bots, friends working together or someone using a program giving him the odds.

I have played at casinos a few times but the people are way to serious for me.

That's also my highest hand I've ever got. I don't remember what it was to, but I do remember it was Hearts and was lower.

I only play online if it's people I know. But your right about how the computer pretty much chooses who wins.

The first Saturday of every month my family and I play poker, it is part of a year long tournament which the winner will get $5,000. It is Texas Hold'em tourny that usally lasts 7 hours. I have only played online poker once, and it wasn't for money. The highest hand I have ever got was Royal Flush of Spades, and that beauty won me $350.

Great thread! As an avid poker player, I could literally talk about this topic for hours. I've only been playing about two and a half years, but I've managed to gain a tremendous respect for the game in that short time. I play both live and online.

The live games consist of a poker league hosted by a couple local sports bars/restaurants, and naturally private invite-only cash games. Online, I mostly play at PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker.

As for the live game, last year I was voted Best Hand for Hand player out of a couple hundred people who play regularly in the league. Basically, that means I was most respected for the knowledge, skill and ability to play each hand optimally based on poker theory, odds, and feel. It's what I was most proud of.

I was also one of three players nominated for Player of the Year. I chose not to vote for myself, which ended up costing me in the end. I just don't believe in voting for oneself....but that's just how I roll.

As for the online game, to date, I've managed to play close to one million hands in just over two years. I'm usually playing 4-5 tourneys at one time. Fortunately, I've been pretty successful playing generally low stakes games. I don't talk about what I've made, but I've gradually moved up in stakes over the past year, and I'm consistently in the black at the end of each month. I'd like to play some larger tourneys, but just haven't been able to yet.

The reason for it is just the nature of poker, and how incredibly time consuming it is. To be good and profitable, it requires a ton of time and concentration. If you're not completely focused after you pay your buy-in, you may as well just hand your money over. Therefore, I can't dedicate myself to it as much as I'd like due to time restraints. There's no reason to risk bigger money if you're not comfortably committed to what you're playing.

My plans for next year include playing in the World Series of Poker if my schedule permits. I've already lined up many folks willing to stake me in at least one of the 55 Bracelet Events. Buy-ins range from $1,500 to $50,000, with the most well-known being the Main Event which has a $10,000 buy-in. Both this year and last, I've barely missed an opportunity to win a $10,000 seat in the Main Event through online satellite tournaments. Both times I've come with 9 people in large tournament fields.

I hope to play in at least one, possibly two different $1,500 events as well as one or two $300 Mega Satellite tourneys into the Main Event. As I mentioned, I have a number of friends lined up willing to help stake me in these events, with a percentage of any possible winnings coming back to them. Should I open it up to TPR peeps as well?

No limit Hold'em is my favorite game, but I can also play Omaha and Razz pretty well. I'm constantly reading about and studying the game from every angle possible (TV tourneys, poker books, and poker websites such as Pocket Fives). As for best hands, after playing that much online, I've had about 8 Royal Flushes, and a couple dozen straight flushes. It's hard not to see just about every scenario possible with that kind of volume though.

Anyway, I warned you I could talk poker for hours.

I only play with friends, never online. I don't see the point of online play unless it is to practice. It gets rather boring if there is nothing at stake and when playing for money online I don't trust it. Bob, indeed, some if that is very true. However, I must say that the bots and "teams" are not as likely as imagined. After all I've read and encountered, I'm inclined to rule out the "bots" thing. "Teams" will always be possible whether you're playing live or online, so I can't deny their existence. Although, you're much more likely to encounter this at the higher stakes online.

As for the odds programs that are available to all players, it continues to be one of those gray areas. Some of the larger sites like Poker Stars and Full Tilt have banned those which are blatantly considered cheating; however, there remains a large selection which do indeed help other players determine how to play their hands based on odds in real time.

I completely understand the common perceptions of online poker based on some of the recent scandals that have surfaced, and the general "unknown" element of the internet in society. With that said, I continue to fully back the overall legitimacy of online poker. There is a TON of money being made on a weekly basis by the top internet pros.....most of whom are below 25 years of age! I'm a firm believer though that the cream will always rise to the top over the time put in at the tables, regardless of odds programs, etc.

I have played at casinos a few times but the people are way to serious for me.

This is very true. Unfortunately, many new wave players already think they're at the ESPN feature table when they sit down at a casino. I take my poker seriously too, but I still manage to have a good time as well.

Hope that wasn't too much for you all.

I love poker, my favorite games are Texas Hold Em', and Blackjack! I play online on Myspace (since I'm not about to go out and buy chips online.) And I also like to play with my friend at his house.

The best hand I've ever gotten was a straight on the first turn in the game (playing live at my friends house.)

I would love to be 21 so I could play for free (with a money prize) at the local Smokey Bones, they do Texas Hold Em' games there all the time.

I'm not that great at it as I'm still trying to master what beats what, and still my spidey-senses don't tingle much so I just be stupid and go all in (on myspace only of course) and lose.

Largest lump sum I've made in one hand was 25,000 dollars from a total of 3 people. I'm more of a high-stakes game man myself, but honestly I don't find myself playing many because the buy-ins are WAY to high.

Chris, I'm really curious as to how you guys structure that, and how many people are participating? It's pretty interesting, and I'd like to apply to be adopted in just for the payout.

But I highly enjoyed reading that, very interesting.

Thank you. And as for yourself, if you really love the game, and wanna be WSOP material, all I can say is just keep playing constantly.

I started playing poker about two years ago and have come to love the game. No Limit Texas Hold 'Em is my game of choice although once I feel more comfortable with that I would like to learn the other variations. I started playing online at FullTilt, low stakes to start but gradually rising and to be honest I find the higher the stakes the easier it is to play a 'proper game' as people are less inclined to go with a bad hand and 'suck out'.

Eight months ago the largest poker room in the UK, Dusk 'Till Dawn, opened 20 minutes drive away from me and that has given me a whole new experience of live poker, in fact I rarely play online at all now. They offer a wide range of tournaments as well as cash tables with varying stakes and also sit and go's. I prefer to play the cash tables and have done reasonably well there.

My best hand came a couple of months ago in a live cash game - my one and only Royal Flush (hearts). Luckily for me there was another guy with a flush too so it paid out rather well I would love to play in the main event at the WSOP someday but it certainly won't happen for a few years at least.

Although I must have played countless hands over the past two years I still feel like I'm learning more in every game I play, especially in live poker.

Yeah, it certainly pays to play with better talent. You can't bluff idiots.

True, there's absolutely nothing worse than holding the nuts with nobody to come along and pay you off.

Same here, and that's what I love about the game.....I learn something new every time I sit down at the table.

YAY for more TPR poker players. Maybe we'll find enough to get some online sit'n go's together!

Well about 30 people play each time with a $30 entry fee, and the top 6 take home money and points. After about 10 months, the qualifying ends, and the top 10 people go on. Then it only takes about a day to determine the winner. I have won about 3 of the monthly games, and have came up 5th in the whole thing. Total, I have won $1,950.

I like poker a lot, but hardly have the time to play it any more. I play texas hold em home games, and occasionally will play 5 or 7 card stud. I play pot limit hold em on PS2 some times.

One game is enough for me though, I'll stick to No Limit for most of my fun.

Can't wait till I'm 21 and can play legally, or when I get to Europe and can play now!

ATTENTION ALL TPR POKER PLAYERS!!!

I'm now able to create private tourneys on PokerStars. These private tourneys would be a simple $5.50 buy-in, and I could set them up as weekly, bi-weekly, or perhaps as a monthly event.

The ability to host a private online game eliminates any fear of collusion, etc. that may have kept you from playing in the past, and we'd all be able to play each other like it was a simple home game.

If you don't have a PokerStars real money account, PM me, and I can help you get started.

Seriously, let me know if you guys would be interested in getting together. I think it'd be awesome!

^ Ah, yeah, there's the rub. You know, that part didn't even cross my mind. I can tell you that undoubtedly there are a ton of underage players currently playing in the states. It's a gray area that simply can't be controlled.

You'll notice that sites like PokerStars and Full Tilt advertise as non-gambling sites where you can learn and play for free. While it's true, you can play for free, all you eventually need to do is deposit money into your account to begin playing for real money. And this is where so many of the underage players probably use a friend or relative of legal age to get started. You could also have someone transfer money from their account into yours, which is how I got started.

I can't tell you what to do, but I probably shouldn't be promoting the game in this manner either unless you are the legal age under your native country's law. I can still set up private games, but all players must be of legal age.

On a side note, and speaking of young internet players, ESPN has chosen to broadcast (tape delayed, naturally) one of the $1,000 rebuy events from this year's WSOP. It'll be on tonight at 8pm, and it'll feature 4 of the top young pros. One of which is a favorite "young gun" of mine to watch play. His name is Jeff Williams, and he currently attends the University of Georgia. He and his buddies made this "film" a while back. It's a documentary of college life as a poker pro. It should probably carry an "R" rating, so be assured that I don't condone some of their behavior. Either way, it's a good view of what the top internet pros all look like these days.

Sounds like a great idea BeemerBoy, I will check out PokerStars and make an account. Can't afford to put lots of cash onto it but that wouldn't be necassary once I started taking all the other TPR members cash!! (joking )

Only problem for me would maybe be the time difference. I'm sure it would be workable with East coast players but more difficult with any West coast players. I guess weekends would be the best time for a game with people from many different time zones.

Aweosme thread! Poker is one of my biggest hobbies right now, especially since I have turned 18 and can play online legally (or thats what I thought before reading this thread at least...anyone know what the actual age is for online and if it differs from Live?) My biggest poker performance was my first "legal" game online in which I came in first out of 300 people. Since then I've won about 4-5 online MTTs (ranging from 300-500 players) and have really come to love and understand the game. Unfortunately I play on Ultimate Bet, which has been considered to be the "worst" of all the poker websites (lots and lots of scandals...O and having to look at Phil Hellmuth everytime i log on makes me puke!) but I plan on making the switch to one of the "big two" sites.

Anyway I'm counting down the days until my 21st birthday and being only 20 minutes away from Atlantic City, I already know where I'm gonna be on that day! Has anyone played live at Atlantic City and if so how does it compare to Las Vegas and other popular poker cities around the world?

O and the biggest hand I have ever had was a slow played 7-6s straight flush that I flopped. Ended up going against AKs and check-raised my friend to bust him.

^^ Thanks. Yeah, the time zones difference is a hurdle, but if we're able to get enough people together to make it worthwhile, then hopefully we can compromise on a good time to play!

Yeah, I went ahead and said 21 because I was thinking of the live game in most states which house casinos and serve alcohol. "Technically, in the states, 18 is legal to gamble online in most states. I'm not an expert on it since it's never been a concern of mine, but you should check anyway if you're curious before playing.)

Yeah, tough to argue the annoyance of Hellmuth. I played at UB for awhile, but never really got comfortable at those tables.....even though, overall, the games were "easier" there (not to discredit your success though). If you switch, join us on Stars!

I've never heard anything but bad things about AC. I've never played there personally, but I don't have much desire to either. About the only good thing out of AC is Phil Ivey.

Hope you can join us on Stars for some private SNGs. It looks like we might actually be able to round up enough players here soon enough. Also, there's currently a 100% deposit bonus for first timers up to $50. The minimun deposit is $25 though. Here's the current information for those interested.
