Kings Island (KI) Discussion Thread

p. 832: Camp Snoopy announced for 2024!

Recommended Posts

Here's what I've visualized.

A board split up in the transition into the loop, when the train passed over, it hit the underside of the train, causing almost like a reverse whip-lash, where rides bodies were jolted forward, resulting in chest pains.

Hmm. I thought it would be a OSTR.

Anyways, I heard this in the car on the way to see POTC (great movie btw). I'm both shocked and relieved about it. As far as relievage, its about time somebody put that SoB in it's place. Seriously the roughest ride I've ever been on (its at the point where it gives me headaches after one lap, no matter where I sit.) However, I'm shocked about the news since it just got reprofiled...

Alot of people around here do love the ride, it really is like nothing else roughness and all. This years tracking did help alot on the jack hammering those cars did but at the same time added a more constant small shutter to the whole ride, for me at least. The ride is a huge investment PKI put in not long ago, I really can't see them just closing the ride due to this. If anything I hope the park is smart enough to just get new trains for the thing.

Can someone describe what happened, was the train heading for the loop after the drop out and one of the "boards" came loose and got stuck under the train..?

It would be a great shame for "SOB" to be closed, King's Island should have it re-designed by the Gravity Group or GCI.

I think it is a very bad design for a woodie and with all the problems it has had, it's days could be numbered.

It's not the height or speed which is the problem but the Premier trains, why not use PTC trains..?

Why was it having finanial problems after it was built..? Who decided to have Premier trains on it..?

I travelled from the UK to ride it in 2000, a month after it opened and it seemed rough then, the lift-hill is the noisest one I have ever been on, I had to cover my ears.

Is it the "anti-roll backs" which make so much noise..?

PKI is my local park, and I'm a bit aghast about this. I find it hard to believe that they did a credible retracking this year. SOB is so rough. Last time I rode it the thing sounded like it was going to fly right off the track, and not in a good way. The stupid trains jackhammer even going downhill.

It's very sad they let it come to this, but it doesn't suprise me one bit considering how poorly SOB tracks.

Tearing down a newish 20+ million dollar ride seems a bit rash. Gravity Group should be hired out to fix it. After all, they're local.

I smell bad karma. I think Cedar Fair smells it too.

They should get rid of a ride like this. Granted, I've never rode it but about 8 out of every 10 opinions I've heard have not been flattering. Rides like this are a potential liability and should be replaced with more fun and safer rides. I know I loved my Viper at Great Adventure but will admit that it was one rough motha' that was becoming a potential injury liability for the park. So, I can't argue it's banishment from the park.

I for one would love for it to be replaced, but I'm highly doubtful it will be. The cost to tear it down would be astronomical. The other option is to take the six flags way and just leave it SBNO, and I don't think cedar fair would take that option, either. Whatever they choose they're going to have some tough choices for SOB, that's for sure.

Many said the same thing about what was then the worlds tallest wooden roller coaster (in the early thru mid 90s); Hercules at Dorney Park, and then Cedar Fair bought the park and tore that ride down.

That ride was rough as all hell but no one is complaining as Hydra is now on its former plot of land.

Please dont bash me but when did Cedar Fair take ova King's Island? I am not from there I am from the South and didnt know Cedar Fair took ova that park. Did Cedar Fair take over any other of the Paramount Parks?

You forgot one "ova."

And yes, expect all Paramount parks to now have 50% more concrete and 100% less character according to many experts.

But we are forgetting that technically SOB, however bad we may find it, IS a world-record holder. Cedar Fair isn't gonna let that go without a fight.

James "CF loves their records" Dillaman

I doubt they will sweat that. They have the resources to build a greater version of the ride and probably will somewhere along the line.

If bringing the ride down because the threat for future injuries can occur than I don't see how you can't keep that ride functional. Plus the bad rep. it gets isn't exactly causing people to flock to the park.

Cedar Fair wants money a lot more then they want the record breaking wooden coaster that the majority of the people that ride it compalin about.
