Kings Island (KI) Discussion Thread

p. 832: Camp Snoopy announced for 2024!

It could be a State of Ohio or OHSA thing also. Unless you know someone on the inside, there's really no way of knowing the true reasoning. Maybe CP sent out a questionnaire and asked people what they thought would make them feel safer. Who really knows, but these 5+ pages of whining about seatbelts is getting old. Would you rather that they have taken the coaster out instead of adding the seatbelts? I bet not. Just go enjoy the ride and the extra 5 seconds it takes you to get into your seat and relax.

Anyone who thinks these rides are unsafe wouldn't pay for admission.

Exactly. They stay home and voice their opinion through Yotube comments on POV's.

So much truth to that! I feel that every roller coaster and flat ride out there has had "someone die" on the ride, according to the YouTube comments! Glad I can trust them!;)

^^Facts being what they are, I have been known to walk the precarious line of what is punishable here at TPR from time to time. Not that I'm bragging, it's just that sometimes I don't see it until I go overboard. So I am going to take the initiative this time and show restraint.

And now I return you to your regularly scheduled programming. Kings Island.

Dang It Guy! Now my Fun Just Ended! Do you go around yelling to small children that Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, Pumpernickel, etc. aren't real? That's how I feel now! You just Ruined My Life!

^Oh fear not comrade, the childish imp inside has not gone away. Trust in this, that he will often raise his ugly head. But I am going to be more cautious about over doing it. You know, kinda like actually seeing when I have reached the end zone and scored a touchdown. Instead of running straight throught end zone, into the lock@r room, taken a shower, gotten dressed, got in my car, driven home, sat down, turned on the TV, and still thought I could catch a replay on ESPN. My mind says to still do it, but do it and relish in it's glory. Savor the moment if you will. Then move on.

Consider it Guytard 2.0

Just got to say after 40 rides i think Banshee is perfect. Pacing, speed, theme, forcefulness, length...it does everything right. It's so good that all the other rides in the park seem boring now. It has a WOW factor. Everyone seems to love it. The ops are getting better and loading also. Only saw them stack three trains once this evening when someone had to do the walk of shame.

Same here. Took a KI newbie there today and put him on it 7 times and he loved it, literally everything about it. I think I was around there when there was that stacking, or it could of been another time. With that small exception everything on that coaster was moving like lightening today, was great to see.

^Nice to hear that, overall, there hasn't been much stacking as I thought that having three trains on a ride of that duration would make it very difficult to avoid it. Hope it continues like that

I ran to the park for a few hours last night, and was pleasantly surprised. There couldn't have been more than a couple hundred cars in the lot, and nearly everything was a station wait. Firehawk, for which I've never seen a line shorter than forty five minutes, was literally a walk-on. Unfortunatey, it felt a bit more rattle-y than usual. Most other lines were station waits or under fifteen minutes. Banshee had what looked like a twenty minute line that didn't take any more than eight. After I was strapped in, one of the operators started cheering because the train the just despatched was still on the dive loop and it was their "fastest cycle yet". Glad to see they're learning the ropes so magnificently!

On the other side of the spectrum, the Diamondback crew seems to still be struggling with the new seat belts. The wait was about thirty minutes when I rode. Good news to those of you who are upset by the new seatbelt rule, though: they do not affect the ride experience in the least, and if you're really that opposed to them, the clamshell restraint does nothing to prevent you from taking it off.

Now, as for ride experiences, I think I've been to the park enough this season to determine that good or bad rides on coasters that used to deliver the opposite haven't just been flukes. The Bat (Flight Deck/Top Gun for you name purists out there) feels quicker and more intense, but rides with an awful squeak the entire time. The Beast was recently retracked and delivers a (relatively) smooth ride, but suffers from a similar violent squeak-- more like a scream-- in the tunnel over the 540 degree helix. Flight of Fear has always had a rattle, but it's slightly more pronounced. I didn't get the usually Vekoma headache after riding Invertigo twice in a row. The only ride I'm really worried about is Drop Zone. I haven't seen it running since the middle of last season, and I know I'm probably jumping to conclusions but I'm afraid they might be taking it out. I mean, think about it; The ride is low capacity, a lot of the general public is too afraid to go on it, and the Action Zone is currently undergoing a major renovation and (I'm presuming) retheme. I was heartbroken when they tore down Son of Beast, but I guess I understand their reasoning. I just don't think I could forgive the park if they removed BOTH of the attractions that made me an enthusiast so soon in their operation.

Ugh. Stuff like this is what earns enthusiasts a bad name.

Stupidity of circumventing safety systems aside - if they don't hinder the ride experience, then why would someone break the rules and risk being thrown out!? Ugh.

^No one is saying you should take them off but the fact is that B&M have 12 coasters that use those restraints with no seatbelts (until now) some of which have been running since 1999 without a single incident. So I think it's fair to say that you're perfectly safe without them.

Don't mistake my post for one supporting the necessity of seatbelts on B&M hypers. I know the rides are perfectly safe without them.

I was merely calling out the comment that suggested one could simply take the seatbelt off if they wanted to - as if this is an acceptable action. What's the point of even bringing it up?

^It does go against the park rules, so you shouldn't obviously do it. But this was a question that had been raised here before and I think all foss123 was trying to do was to clear it, nothing more.

Regardless of intent, this comment only serves to cast negative light on the enthusiast community. It paints with a broad stroke and makes us sound like a bunch of entitled children.

I wouldn't want officials from a park to read nonsense like this. Especially in light of parks being more gracious than ever with events, media day invites, etc.

Yup! I realize that I could have worded that better, but the bottom line is there were people inquiring about it and I answered their question. In no way do I condone breaking park rules because you think they're stupid or redundant, but I was simply observing that the restraint does not cover the seatbelt and prevent the rider's access to it.

Seconded on the Diamondback comments. Theres nothing taken away from the experience from the seat belts but the crew is moving a lot slower. A lot of people friday morning didnt even put the seat belts on and the restarts had to be released again so the Ops could help the passengers with the belts.

The Beast does make an awful sound now, but I noticed it in the first half of the ride too, only when the ride is banked and turns right, which is odd considering the helix at the end is left. But the screeches where really REALLY bad yesterday, oddly enough with a less full train. At night/dusk when the ride was running full loads it seemed less bad. I'm not sure why that is.

Drop Zone is broken and should be up in june. My good friend from CCM works at the park and theres something messed up with the cable inside the tower, and they're working on getting it fixed asap. When she asked people they'd said mid june but can't give an exact date. Not going anywhere!

Do any other KI employees care to shed light on this?

The seatbelts aren't a huge deal. What is a huge deal is the fact that they need to put these on the ride to appease the GP.

Who ever said these seatbelts are to appease the GP? If B&M hypers had ridership issues because they are "unsafe" (they are quite the opposite), then this could be argued. My guess would be insurance. There haven't been recent occurrences on a B&M hyper that would lead to adding seatbelts, like when the New Texas Giant and other Six Flags coasters did last summer/fall.

The same argument can be asked for raising the height requirement for iron dragon as well.

I bet it was based on insurance as well. I'm not sure about kings island, but I hear that cedarpoint is self insured. That makes some of the recent changes kinda odd if you have control over these type of decisions.

Like I'm sure many other have as well, I've wondering what it could turn into if RMC turned it into an Iron Horse model. It might not be as nuts as some of the others, but it'd be interesting to see. However I wouldn't actually prefer that to happen, I like the beast as it! It was just screechy this past weekend. Can't change the classics. I feel the same way about Mean Streak. I like it as it, infact its a favorite woodie of mine.

It would be very interesting to see what RMC could do to The Beast. I just don't know if it would be "ethical" to do so. It is such a classic. I am starting to believe that other parks are not making the "world's longest wooden coaster" not because of money, but because of The Beast being such a legend. I would love to see RMC come to KI do their thing and continue the story line that is slowly developing with The Beast, SOB, and Banshee. I really hope that KI does a full out story line for these rides. I don't know but it would be really interesting for them to do so.

I am loving Nickelodeon right now because they are starting to do "backstories" to a few of their shows by bringing in past shows to make the back story extremely deep.
