Playland(PNE) Vancouver Discussion Thread

FRIGHT NIGHTS Tix are now available for October!

Recommended Posts

^ Well, I am glad I got at least two rides on it, before The Fair opened. But still. It's sad to see, that no matter what Playland does (re-tracking, seat belts, train configurations.....), it usually ends up like it's happened before and after Covid, by the way. I still don't get why they don't use off-season time for all that they do to Coaster. Oh well. Stuff happens. ☹️

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 🎒 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our day at the PNE worked out pretty good. We went last Thursday, and contrary to what was predicted earlier, there was no rain, the sun was out and it was a really nice day to be outside. We hoped to stay till 9:30 when that Pyrotech show happened. But once again, our age (and endurance) dictated we leave earlier... which we did around 8pm. Nonetheless, we got to revisit stuff, and get that ribs meal we always get every year. 🍺
The MarketΒ πŸ’΅ ... and Beyond Monet. πŸ–ŒοΈ
We did our usual circuit of the (what used to be called) Marketplace, checking everything out,. And when we passed by jewelry stalls, David was sure to show off one of his lit pendants (and brought another along to show the differences), and got some great feedback from sellers, and a few gp who saw what he had. Didn't buy much on this trip, except a couple of bags of salt water taffy.
The "Beyond Monet" exhibit was really, just a circle of floor-to-ceiling screens with projected (mostly) enlargements of Monet's work. When David and I were last In Paris (2015) we took in Monet's work, especially his Lillies collection which were actual curved canvasses on the walls of the gallery specially built for his work. In the PNE exhibit, we wished there were more 'displays' with photos etc. about Monet and his life. But a lot of people went into it, and stuck around, so I guess that's good for art's sake, lol.
The Taste Showcase (in the Rollerland Bldg.) 🍷
This was where the "Happy Hour" at the BC Wine Bar took place. I indulged with a couple of reds, both pretty dry. But cheaper than paying full price. This is where they also put the Cooking Demos for people to watch and enjoy (but no samples this year. Hmmmph.)
Superdogs Show: At the Barkade (in the Coliseum) πŸΆπŸ•πŸ•β€πŸ¦ΊπŸŒ
This was the usual half hour of canine fun, themed to video games of all things. A great assortment of dogs, large and small, did their thing to the delight of the large crowd, watching. Some of the racing challenges were really fun, and sometimes very funny when the dogs didn't do what they were supposed to do.
The High Divers πŸŠβ€β™‚οΈ
This made me think about the turn of the century (1900's) when this act was probably performed.Β  A lot of people filled the open area, and the divers did not disappoint. Especially that last diver, who dove from the highest possible spot on the ladder. Crazy, but every entertaining.
RIBS πŸ–
With only one actual ribs company to choose from, as we passed on the BBQ Truck, which was the only other BBQ spot available. Prairie Smoke & Spice we had eaten before, at previous Fairs. So we got a half rack with all three sides (corn bread, beans, slaw). It was perfect for us and the only 'leftover' we had, was some of the cornbread to take home.
The instant fatigue set in for us, and we decided enough was enough.Β  Took our exit through Playland, and found out that Coaster was down ... again.
<sighs> It was a good visit this year, But I think we're going to aim for visiting at a later time in the day next year, AND checking out which act/artist/band is playing the night we're there, in the PNE Concert Series. Thursday night it was Pat Benatar, and I would have loved to see/hear her perform. 🎀
Here's the photos of the visit....
After the canoe building exhibit, we headed to Rollerland, took in Happy Hour, got a quick snack, and then proceeded to the Superdogs show.
Oops. Too much sun on the entry sign...
But it's called The Taste Showcase. With a Happy hour!
While in line for the wine, I saw this up above.
Most definitely for the Rollerland roller skating nights, etc.... DISCO BALL!
My two lonely little cups of red wine. They were good, but very dry for my taste.
In the same building as the BC Wine Bar. Colourful.
We got two "mini dogs" that were a good and filling snack, before seeing the Superdogs show.
Usually there's two attraction events going on here. But Superdogs had it all to themself, this Fair.
I don't have the experience to catch sudden movements on my camera. Like dogs. But I tried.
The Bows (Wows?). It was a fun half hour.
They had a "train" touring around The Sanctuary for those who needed a break. We should have ridden this.
What we got. 1/2 rack of ribs with all three sides, there.
There were no leftovers, except some corn bread. Then we decided to be on our way home.
"Over One Month Later...." πŸ˜‰
^ Have you seen any more progress on The New Coaster, lately?
I am trying to get over there, and take what photos I can, from all sides, if possible. One day soon. I hope.
Been a while, so I thought I'd just ask you. πŸ˜‹
After some time ......
Looking (above) at the layout for ThunderVOLT, I am really REALLY hoping,
that you get not one, but two cycles on it.Β  Otherwise .... yeah, ok.
There was a video posted a few days ago, of ThunderVOLT having a test run.
Unfortunately, it only goes through one circuit.... I am hoping it does two runs. We'll see, eventually.
Thanks to Playland(PNE) for the video.
Just checked with the site, and it appears Playland is going to be closed Mondays AND Tuesdays, from Opening Day (18th) through June. Then they'll go to a five day week, Wed-Sundays. And for the current weekends, it'll be mainly a 11am-5pm schedule.
Whee.Β  http://www.pne.ca
Opening Day at Playland ~ May 18/24
Rain had been falling on and off through the morning. No big deal. But my intentions were to just tour around the park, maybe get something to eat and drink, and just see what's changed (if anything) since last year. The first surprise was that all the games arcade was blocked off, and to be eventually rebuilt (the facades), assuming they're going to get it done by the time the actual PNE Fair happens, mid-August. The other surprise was that the entire row of buildings on the north side of the park, including my go-to drinking spot, the Ride Side Bar, was demolished, leaving space for the upcoming new concert amphitheatre being built. <grrr> Got a couple of rides done, food at the White Spot place, an onride pic from the Kettle Creek Mine coaster... and that was it.
Both Coaster and the new ThunderVOLT weren't open. And the new coaster wasn't going to be open until July. <sighs> Until then, here's my pix...
What's this? What's this? The young woman at the Snack Shack told me about the renovation
they're doing with all the facades of the Games Arcade.
IMG_5252.JPG.5d9f5fb01cf30c2c8e377a1d75765dfd.JPG
Still testing.
IMG_5253.JPG.df4f62cb35fba2331e138246ce84982b.JPG
All blocked off. Yay.
IMG_5254.JPG.adb01750ea709cf06c16a34211107fd1.JPG
And nothing's been done with this building since .... several years ago?
IMG_5255.JPG.f91bb2c0088523556cabb2a3f8b99968.JPG
The Haunted Mansion wasn't going to open, until the afternoon. I was there between 11am and noon.
This was the closest I could get to ThunderVOLT. And more green fences here.
IMG_5257.JPG.89fa5edd55f1ce5e2a5481158b36eebf.JPG
And the entire north end of the buildings .... all gone. Including my bar <sniff> I'm hoping they put it
into the new arcade being rebuilt on the east side of Playland.
Does anyone use the word "fly" anymore? Sky Bender was open.
West Coast Wheel wasn't open - and missing a few ride buckets, too.
I think the Kettle Creek Coaster sign needs a bit of a touch up, yes? No?
All things considered, it's a pretty good coaster for anyone, kids and adults alike.
They re-opened the Scrambler in it's original spot. Was down all last season.
In Canadian $$$. Pretty reasonable in American $$$, I thought.
What I got: a bacon-cheese burger, fries, and a nice thick blueberry milkshake.
Lots of bacon and cheese.... yum!
After eating, a bit more strolling. This is the free Mini-Golf attraction. Not too busy right now.
IMG_5276.JPG.f07318915b1b34a5702d498d54308e9e.JPG
And Coaster. "Closed until further notice." Okay.... time to leave.
Forgot to add to the TR. They give you a Digital Copy # of the onride photo, taken.
So here's a better look at myself - and check out that caption. The t-shirts came out when AtmosFEAR first opened. The gift shop, sadly, is no more. But with ThunderVOLT opening soon, who knows?
Maybe they'll actually open a new gift shop, with the revamp of the Games Arcade .... along with the Ride Side Bar 2.0 πŸ˜‰
Hmmmmph. Another very VERY RAINY weekend, here. I wouldn't be surprised if Playland closed early today, because of the torrent of rain (almost like a monsoon, truth!) falling now. So I skipped this visit. Hopefully we get back to the sunshine kind of day we all love, next weekend, lol. 😎
EDIT to add: Haven't gone back to Playland since that first day visit. Rainy weather these past few weekends. I did it in the rain for TPR tours, but not this time, heh. Will probably wait until the schedule expands to five days a week, starting in July.
Additional EDIT: "And then he fell down..." On the 9th I "kissed the pavement" with my whole body, and have been recovering ever since. Very painful, and NOT for coaster riding at this point in time. Hopefully, maybe, this coming weekend (29-30th) I'll be better to visit the park. Maybe. 🀞
It's The Day Before our annual fair, The PNE (Pacific National Exhibition), opens. And it's been a good couple of months, between now, and 'back then' in May when Playland opened for it's 2024 season. I ended up visiting it a few times, though not as many as I've done before, in past seasons. It's an "old age thing". And I'm dealing with it, LOL.
Here's the pix from my Visit(s) to Playland, after all the rain we got in June. New coaster to check out; new drinking 'huts' to get your beer from; and a LOT of DIRT!
Β
This was what the line looked like, 1/2 hour before the park opened.
Glad to see they're still flying the Pride Flag.
Many many choices...
IMG_5367.JPG.17ad62dcd2feb57fd20a5aeb4023d411.JPG
I decided to go the carnivore way, lol.
IMG_5370.JPG.5d819eb2c4a3b2a75051a801cfd119cf.JPG
Wasn't too bad. I'd had it before, so I knew what I was getting. And that finished up this visit there!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The other visits were varied and random. Crowds were actually GI-normous, way more than I'd seen before.

But other seasons the park was open included Mondays and Tuesdays in the week. This season they were not.

So here's (at least) three days' visit to Playland.

Speaking of 40 seconds .... Wheeeeeeee!

^ And thanks for enjoying the pix! And yeah, after seeing the line ups for Coaster at the "front" of Playland, I have no doubt that Volt will be killer waiting times ....for a 40 second ride. Eh. I did get to ride it once, as well as Coaster in a couple of visits. I found Coaster to be be surprisingly rough, and felt thankful (ironic) that the seat belts I railed against, held me tight, and actually comfortably "in the seat". Honest, I didn't expect Coaster to be this rough. Without seat belts, it had been actually pretty smooth. Until now.

And as for ThunderVOLT, it's a one and done for myself. Very forceful through the rest of the ride, after being launched up the (what I call) "Little Top Hat." It is intense for the short time you ride it. But...waiting up to (probably) two hours for this coaster? Not for me.

Opening day photos I'll post tomorrow.

And for those who want to know more - https://www.pne.ca/

IMG_5481.JPG.aa7bca8736595610f4b2543267e0c142.JPG

The lineup for Coaster extended past/outside the shade tents. That is a very - long - wait. But the ride's longer, lol.

Opening Day on Saturday wasn't a big deal for me, compared to the crowds coming in. The only things I wanted to do was 1. Getting my Two Weeks' Pass to the fair and 2. Don't go into any buildings (except a bathroom, if needed) and just check the whole site out, to see where everything was, etc. Especially with the new amphitheater being built (and not open until 2026), a lot of space was lost onsite. But it was packed with food trucks, the nightly Concerts were moved to the Coliseum and the Super Dogs show moved into the Agrodome, which usually has horse events, knights jousting, etc. Not this time, sadly.

After walking roughly 15 minutes to get to the north end of the park, this is where I was to pick up my PNE Pass.

It took nearly 20 minutes to figure it all out but....

IMG_5443.JPG.98c134afd24285b9f77b102d4404b89a.JPG

I got 16 separate tickets, one for each day of the fair. A bit much, but hey - I can go every day, now!

Did Coaster ever get two trains?

I guess people wait close to two hours some days for Xcelerator at Knott's in the 33C 91F today's Buena Park's summer heat and I don't think the good parts of that ride last for 40 sec, then your Thunder Volt isn't too bad if you are allowed to start the line with a full beer or cocktail in each hand and if it is 20C or 70F outside in Vancouver todayΒ :-).Β  I would be soooo drunk by my 6th or 7th coaster. Enjoy the fair!Β Β

^ No, Coaster was still running one train only. I was really surprised, as I assumed they'd have two trains going by Fair time. Not to be, sadly.

And I must admit.... I too have waited for several coasters, on TPR tours overseas, for an hour (or much more at Fuji-Q in Japan), some of which only ran about as long as what you mentioned, Xcelerator and definitely ThunderVOLT.

So I get the thing, that everyone will wait tons of time, just for one ride on whatever, etc. etc. But I'm past that now. And for now, the only way to get a couple of rides on either coaster at Playland, is to line up at least an 1/2-1 hour before the park opens, during Playland's season. With your pass and/or printed ticket bought online with you. The lineup for the box office(s) don't open until when the park practically opens, at 11 am. So I did it twice, on one Friday and got in the second train for Coaster, and the first train ( ! ) for Volt on another Friday. I never tried to ride them together. Too much distance between them. And I stopped running a long, long time ago, heh.

Yesterday, I went to The Fair, and just toured around The PNE Barns. These buildings have been around for a long, long time. And they are a great way to introduce kids and city families to country life, etc. Unfortunately, since this was a Tuesday, with gray skies overhead, the crowds weren't there as much as the usual weekends. So I believe a few of the scheduled demos didn't happen, just because of the lack of .... people!

Thursday I went back to The Fair, this time taking in the dog show "Super Dogs", and an annual fave for a lot of visitors - "For The Love of Drag." Really. The 1/2 hour Rock Icons show, complete with ~air~ guitar playing and lip syncing, was pretty good, and not only had drag queens in the show but a couple of drag kings, too! One played 'Prince' and the other did 'Jon Bon Jovi' It was fast, quick, and less microphone talk. I think David will enjoy this, too. However......

"Super Dogs" was a lot of introduction of the dogs, explanation of the course, and challenges ..... it was a lot of talk. The "action" of the dogs charging through the setups was great. I think the audience especially enjoyed it, when two dogs were pitted against each other. Made for fun, loud cheering them on. But I really think that this may be the last time I see this show. It's always a themed variation on the usual challenges, and the only big difference here, was that the show was moved to the small Agrodome, as the Summer Nights Concerts were moved to the Coliseum, where Super Dogs used to be. And the dogs being in the Agrodome, eliminated a number of horse showings, and a great knights on horses show. And I think the setup won't change too much, since the Amphitheatre will still be being built,

But hey - the dogs really worked their ....um .....behinds of! πŸ˜‰ And the races are really intense for what they are, to and for the dogs. But I think I'll pass on next year's at least. Then, when the Amphitheatre opens in 2026, I'll maybe give the doggies another look-see.

And coming out of the drag show at 6:30pm, it was mobbed at nearly every food truck, so I didn't get my Henry's BBQ Chicken <sad>. But when I return on Tuesday, I'll sure to get my Henry's earlier in the afternoon.

My visit yesterday to The Fair, was mainly to check out the gardens and Sanctuary that reside on the PNE site. AND to get myself some chicken from Henry's BBQ! Unfortunately, the chicken I got turned out to be somewhat dry, and not very juicy. No matter. The order of fries was f-ing HUGE! So much so, IΒ  had nothing to take the extra fries home with me. The container was too greasy, so sadly, I dumped about 1/3 that was left, into the compost bin.

The first garden I visited was The MOMIJI Japanese Garden which was located beside the Garden Auditorium, where a (usual) themed display was installed. Past ones include, Game of Thrones; Hockey; The Beatles; Dungeons and Dragons, etc. But not since covid has there been anything there, except an ongoing circus school for young kids and teenagers. Which is great, all the same.

Anyway, this garden has been around for several decades. Not very many stone lanterns and/or stone statues to be seen. But it's a quiet place, with running water into the small lake the garden surrounds. It's amazing how The Fair sounds fall away, when you're here or in the Sanctuary. The Italian Gardens, not so much.

^ The un-used Garden Auditorium looming over the Garden. Fun Trivia: This is where David and I attended Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of The Moon Tour". In the centre of the building , we all sat on the floor. And then I remember this lemon-scented smoke coming from the stage, and 'wafting' (wafting?) over everybody! It was trippy. What I remember..... πŸ˜‹

The Italian Gardens are more out in the open space of the fairgrounds. And a somewhat orderly presentation of walkways and fountains, etc. They also share space with two 'attractions' for the kids. One is the Discovery Farm, which was usually found in the Barns. The outdoor setting looks much nicer, toΒ  me. Also, a performance space called Toon City to entertain the young ones.

(Flower)Pot-heads.

After this, it was on to The Sanctuary. And instead of walking around the whole place, for $2 I took the PNE Express train to circle the green space.Β  Which reminds me. This whole area used to be the row of three separate buildings, side by side, joined together by overhead walkways between buildings. Several decades later, all three buildings were removed, to create a massive green space on the fairgrounds, including a lake, and several spots to just chill out and enjoy the greenery. The train didn't get that close to the centre lake and other pathways. But it was a nice casual way to enjoy this as part of the PNE, with a lot of the noise from The Fair being muffled by all the trees, etc. We all agreed (on our train) that "This was the best ride at theΒ  PNE - and cheaper too!" πŸ™‚
