TPR's Ever Evolving Park Index

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, it has been a while since I updated everyone on the Park Index.

We now have almost 19,000 photos covering 6,000 coasters and rides, a huge increase from the 6,000 photos of over 1,500 coasters that were in the database a year ago.

There have been over 3,100,000 visits to the Park Index, I hope everyone finds what they need.

Continue to submit pictures of adult flat rides that are not already listed. Maybe I'll even get around to adding bumper cars, carousels, ferris wheels soon. (An inside joke for those who have submitted photos that have not been added to the database).

Remember to submit photos in the proper size so that we can use them. Before your next visit to your home park, check out the Park Index first and take note of the adult rides that we are missing and take pictures.

We are not looking to document every kiddie coaster out there, rcdb does a very good job in that area. However, at TPR we want to make sure you know everything there is to enjoy at the medium to large parks to make your trips even more fulfilling.

thanks

Wow, I can't believe how much it's grown in the last year! You guys have done a fantastic job of maintaining an updating the whole thing!

I've got a random question that's been on my mind for a while (yes, I spend way too much time thinking about things like the park index!): Do you intend on incorporating signs of park entrance signs into the index at any point? I think getting photos of all the ride signs has been a great addition to the index, the park entrance sign seems to me like a natural extension of that.

I'm sure it's probably been thought about before and I'm not quite sure where in the index such a photo would fit but I think it would be a great thing to incorporate at some point.

Anyway, I really should go through the rest of my photos and upload those flat rides that aren't in the index yet.

Thanks again Larry and the rest of the team for all the hard work!

Divv - that's an interesting idea. I'll suggest to Robb, maybe a picture of each park's entrance sign appears on the lead page for each park in the Park Index, in a future version.

The Park Index is ever evolving!

Of course, thanks for your hundreds of photo contributions also.

Many of you probably know there is an "In Development"update to the park index which includes actual reviews (OMG! Theme Park Review with actual REVIEWS) and a place for members to add their 1 to 5 star ranking of each park as well.

The front page for each park is still kind of a "work in progress" ride now and I do think we will plan to include a single park image on each of these main pages.

So perhaps if we have a really nice photo of the park entrance it could be that, or maybe even a photo of one of the parks signature rides. Or if we get really fancy, maybe we'll have a box that displays a photo and then magically changes into a another photo after a coulpe of seconds.

I hear that "slideshow" technology is now available for websites and we should look into it.

We'll see!

And for those who click on Robb's "In Development" link, but sure to select a larger/popular US, European or Japanese park to see where we stand.

Content had not been input for the smaller parks, all of this takes time.

  • 3 months later...

^thanks Chuck.

In the next couple of days, I'm going to post an updated list of pictures still needed for parks already in the index. The TPR community has done a great job supplying photos to the Park Index over the past 12 months. However, with the recent site hack, I visited each Park Page and developed a new list of needs.

We now have over 25,000 photos in the index. This covers over 6,600 rides at nearly 500 parks.

Improvements continue daily, as practically all of Shane's Amusement Attic submissions are now more easily viewed in the "nostalgia" section within each park's page within Park Index.

Thanks to everyone who helped and I hope you all continue find the Park Index useful.

Do all trip reports get put on the parks page and checked for any valuable ride index pictures when they get put in the archive?

Excellent question!

I personally view every PTR that is posted on the site. As the Obsessive Overlord of the Park Index, that's what I do. I guess I could put that in the "nerdiest coaster thing I have ever done thread."

For PTRs, I will select what myself or other moderators deem the best to be linked to the Park Index. It's all subjective, sometimes we pick one with great photos, sometimes we select one that is well written and tell an entertaining story. We can not link every PTR.

I will only link PTRs if the photos are downloaded onto TPR, if your photos are hosted on imageshack, smugmug or somewhere else we run the risk as have a bunch of Red X in the future.

Of course when there are fewer PTRs posted, the quality of those linked may not be of as high a quality. Hence why my PTR of Wild Waves is linked, we only have one other PTR from that park.

When it comes to ride photos, if I see an adult flat ride that is not in the Park Index in someone PTRs, I will create that ride name in our database and link the picture. We don't care if it is a Scrambler or a S&S Space Shot, if it is an adult flat ride we want it in the Park Index. Again this is a lot easier for me to do if the photos are loaded on to the TPR server, versus imageshack, smugmug, etc...

Larry already knows how much I love the park index, because I'm constantly pestering him about it.

And I really like the new(-ish) park map thing (though not every park has one yet).

So yes, indeed, keep up the great work, Larry!

Offhand, do you want picture for rides and attractions for kids? What about rides and attractions that are no longer in the park?

Kid's rides - No!

Family Rides - Yes!

Unfortunately, we have to draw the line somewhere and not completely overload the overlord. Along the same lines, not many FECs/Kiddie Parks are added. Smaller parks get added if they have enough rides for adults also like Kiddieland. Or these types of parks will be added if Robb and Elissa visit them.

We'll add defunct attractions if they are unique. Remember we are not trying to chronicalize the parks' history in the ride listing, but instead give people an understand of what they can expect at the park. We leave defunct coasters in the park index, because everyone loves coasters.

We try to leave the legacy stuff in the nostaglia thread and it can also "live" in older PTRs.

I know that this will take more work for the overlord, but has any thought been given to doing a little park history blurb, or separating the coasters/rides into existing/defunct categories?

Perhaps the overlord needs a minion or two?

Little history blurb may be accounted for in the next version of the Park Index, which is in development.

Separating coasters/rides into existing/defunct is a software development issue and up to the Big Guy. At present we can label a ride/coaster as defunct on the back end and if you click on that ride link from the park index it will tell you the "ride/coaster is defunct" above the pictures.

Robb has supplied me with a couple of minions, but there is a lot going on. He may be on the lookout for more minions n the future.

As promised a recap of photos that we would like to add to the Park Index if anyone has them. So as you sort through all those photos you saved during the off-season keep the following in mind. If you have a photo of a ride at a Park already in the index, but that ride is not in the Park Index, feel free to submit that also. Whether it is an old Eli Scrambler and new Huss attraction we would like to have it in TPRs Park Index.

We can't add all photos, especially for parks that are very popular, but all submissions will be viewed. In many instances photo submissions for popular rides are very similar to photos already in the park index, so try to make sure your submission is unique or new.

The photos and PTRs we link into the Park Index generally abide by the following guidelines. Remember we can't always link every Photo TR as we highlight the best, so we have to be selective.

1 - Photos should be downloaded onto the Theme Park Review server (not Imageshack, photobucket) that way we know a Red X will never appear.

2 - Photos should not exceed 800x600

3 - PTRs should contain a variety of pictures of the park, including multiple rides and areas. (Not just one or two rides/attractions).

4 - Entertaining captions always help if it is a popular park with a lot of PTRs.

5 - High quality photos (not blurry, distorted or out of focus).

6 - Lastly, we are not adding kiddie rides at this time

Larry,

I remember either CTU_Agent or BamaRob had shots of BGT Congo River Rapids from a year or so ago. Also, spaceace12 has several shots of Six Flags St. Louis Thunder River. Hope those leads are a help.

There's a slim chance I might get out to Six Flags St. Louis this next summer. If so, you'll have 'em.

Cheers!

Next time I'm at Phantasialand, I'll be sure to get those pictures.

Thanks - For the flume - I know there is a sign right outside the entrance directing people to either the Stonewash or Whitewash side.
