Photo TR: Del Mar Fair 2008

Recommended Posts

I was able to check out the Del Mar Fair this past Sunday. The midway was abundant with beautifully maintained rides including the Mondial Fighter and Evolution rides. Check out the photos!

Thanks for checking out the photos, watch for other reports from other socal fairs as they come around.

Wind Surf was like a top spin on crack, they even had water fountains that sprayed riders!

Another shot of the Tango, it reminds me of my favorite midway ride, Mondial's Top Scan.

The Star Flyer, scariest ride ever, no joke, would definately do it again though.

Spin Out is small but packs a mean punch!

KMG Speed, I love these rides but they can be a bit expensive. The midway also had a reverse bungee shot ride and bungee jumping for upcharges.

The fairgrounds are so large they even have an aerial tram so you can easily cross to the other side

Lots of flipping and spinning, very disorienting!

Magnum, another rare find for an American midway. This ride is known as a "shake" and manufactured by Mondial.

This unusual ride is a himilaya-type spinning ride taht has fabric covers that flip over the cars halfway through the cycle

I had never seen a Mondial Fighter before! It was a really fun ride, I had no ideas these travelled outside Europe.

The two best rides on the midway, the amazing Evolution and the KMG Tango. Both are disorienting and intimidating!

I just might try and get down there this weekend or next. Amtrak is convenient, and there's a shuttle from the station directly to the fairgrounds. This may be my chance to finally ride a Star Flyer. Too bad it isn't the 200+ foot one, though.

I had no idea rides like this ran in America. I'm lucky to even find a Zipper at the carnivals around here. All of those Mondial rides are especially rare to find in the U.S. Does anyone know if the Airwolf or Flying Circus rides have appeared at any American fairs?

The Mondial Fighter-- and I believe, the Shake-- are both fixtures at the Minnesota State Fair. Very cool-looking rides. The Fighter is so big that it's almost jarring to see it on a midway.

Thanks for the TR!

Some quick comments as I need to get out the door for work.

Fighter by factory name is a Mondail Swinger.

Some of the major rides that are there are owned by independent operators who do book ins with the major fairs.

Fighter is owned by a Colorado company called Flight to Mars.

Magnum is owned by Wood Entertainment out of Texas.

Both of these along with others make appearances at the major state fairs around the US.

Biggest problem with the European rides is there weight, they are not legal to transport on US highways.

Fighter usually makes an appearance at the Minnesota State fair in late Auguest to Labor day. Last years ride list is still up on there web site

http://mnstatefair.org/pages/midwaykidway.html

Note that Space Roller is a Mondial top scan that usually gives some really good rides.

Some photos from last year.. http://rockopilot.com/mnsf/album1.html

The Del Mar Fair as well as the fairs in LA, OC, and Riverside Counties are done by Ray Cammack Shows.

Del Mar is actually an independent midway. RCS just happens to book the most rides. That is why you will only see the Fighter at the SD fair (along with some other rides, like the spinning mouse coaster).

RCS, however, does run the midways at all the other fairs you mentioned.

Great fair and pictures. What show was it exactly? Reminds me of Reithoffer, but doesn't seem completely like it. I love Tango's, there amazing. Top Scan isn't as good in my opinion. Again great report, and thanks for sharing. Much better then the fair I went to today, lol.

I've seen most of these rides at full blown amusement parks, but never fairs. Imagine how much it costs to transport these things!

That strange Musik Express-Catapillar thing is really weird, I've never even seen one before, or heard of one, for that matter.

For as long as I can remember the San Diego County Fair has featured the Hi-Miler.

If I can remember correctly the coaster used to be blue and silver. Does anyone have any pictures of the coaster in it's early days? How long has it been around?

I also remember another coaster by the name of Looping Star at the fair.
