Six Flags America (SFA) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

We're obviously going to go for all the credits, even though I am leary of the spinning mouse, I'll probably even ride that (maybe last of the day - I hate anything that spins). Also are the Batwing restraints that bad? It will be my first Vekoma flyer as Ive only otherwise done Ultimate Flight, which I think are insanely comfortable (save for hanging on the break run). Any recommended flats? I wanna try the flyers and the Drop Tower, anything else I should make a point to check out?

^ Vekoma flyer restraints are, IMO, god-awful. This was reaffirmed at my recent visit to Carowinds when riding Nighthawk. On a B&M flyer, I feel 100% secure and will stick my arms out like I'm flying. At Carowinds, I was gripping and pushing up on the fiberglass sides of the seat to ease up on the restraints because they feel so flimsy.

Ragin Cajun won't be bad, you'll be fine on it. It doesn't spin that much - at least it didn't when I rode it at SFGAm.

^^^ Well thats good to know. Ive heard good and bad. I dont like the idea of going up the lift on my back, seems weird to suddenly flip over for the drop. Ill let you guys know what I think come Monday

Honestly, the only thing I do not like about Batwing is that I don't like hearing the 'loud' clanking of the lift chain. Though,..at the same time being flipped a little after the apex makes for some fun. I wish I could meet you there; gotta work

Yeah the thing I enjoy about batwing is the surprise element of being flipped over at the top and realizing how high you are. I do not mind the batwing restraints but the inline twist are much more forceful that the one on SUF and so you might want to brace for that part... I don't think they are centerlined so you are flung around. Overall I love the ride... also the brakes are pretty strong so brace yourself. I agree about the lift ... I wish there was a way to have a silent lift like on superman... but i've gotten used to it now. Overall its my second favorite ride at the park.

As far as flats.... Voodoo Drop and French Quarter Flyers are definitely fun. You will be good on Ragin' Cajun... but if you don't want to spin a lot watch out for car 4 (for some reason it spins way more than the others).

Speakin of... does anyone know why they only load 3 people max per car... Did they do this at Great America as well? Do the other reverchon spinners that were built around the time as RC have the same limitation (I.e. Exterminator at Kennywood, etc..)?

I think it depends on the size of the passengers. I saw four kids ride at once. As far as flats, the flyers are an automatic ride. I've figured out the best way to turn the fin for optimum speed...took me all season to figure out . Also hit Rodeo, Voodoo Drop, and Zinger. Depending on who's loading u on Rodeo, the loading time may piss u off. Don't be fooled by the small drop on the tower. It's a pretty intense fall.

I agree with the twists on Batwing. Feels weird on your chest.

Yep...they operated it the same way at Great America. I believe they did load 4 if the group was just kids, though. The one at Beech Bend operates like that as well. I can't quite remember how Opa at Mt O operated, though.

I always liked Vekoma flyers and never understood the hate. I prefer the standard Vekoma model to the SUF clones personally but I'm in the minority.

Put me in that select few as well. I rode Batwing and I was never the same. I found it super intense, It really put Superman Ultimate Flight so shame for me.

Thanks for all the tips and advice, guys. I'm really looking forward to Sunday simply because its going to be some firsts for me. Since I never got to do Chiller as it was closed the few times I was there when it was around, JJ will be my first Premier launcher (tho it sounds like its not up to snuff with the others), S:ROS will be my first Intamin hyper (yes, true rookie status here), and my first Vekoma flyer. Wild One sounds awesome and the others I'm kinda meh about, but I hope to get on everything we can. I'm keeping my expectations of the park itself low so hope to be surprised. Weather is looking great.

One top about Wild One by the way... each car has 3 rows. I really suggest riding in the middle row of any car. Riding in the other rows leads to a much rougher ride. It's great in the middle rows (like a lot of woodies... when in doubt sit one row from the back).

And I think you'll like JJ. It's a solid coaster. Don't base your opinion of Intamin Hypers on Superman though. It's good but not great.

Yeah I certainly wish we were going on Skyrush or Bizarro over this but its close and its free entry for everyone in our party (we all have passes/memberships) so this is our best and closest option. Trying to get up to Hershey sometime in Oct and saving my SFNE trip for late 2015, now that WC is coming.

Coasterbill that's a good tip about Wild One... I never thought about it that way. I'm going to try out the middle rows ... I always went for the front row (thinking that it may offer slightly more leg room).

Boldikus- I am going to PM you... I might be at the park Sunday. That's awesome that you will having some first. If it's your first Intamin hyper... I think it's a good one for starts. I love the 3rd hill on Superman! JJ has been noticeably sped up (there are time when it looks just a tad bit faster and there are times when it looks like Poltergeist... it probably varies by the weight on the train).

Yeah it looks like if there are any one in the yellow (where they are required to ride with an adult) that they may put 4 people in... but if its all adults above the height restriction they only allow 4... but then I saw this picture of kennywood's exterminator here on TPR and it made me

wonder. kennywood_49.jpg.ffa52362be5f0a8d0de09c18c98b2c25.jpg

You should! I'll be with my bro-in-law and his brother, and maybe one other friend is he decides to come. Leaving Philly at 7am to get there before opening.

Those are at the top of my list. ^^ I hate Green Lantern so I have low expectations for Apocalypse, from what I read ROAR seems awful, but from the POV it looks interesting, Ive done SLCs so not looking forward to Mind Eraser and as stated, I'm leery of the spinning mouse. We'll see how it all shakes out.

My only gripe about green lantern is that for a stand up coaster, I find it pretty long and the Gs going through my legs (after an long day of walking around the park) causes them to feel even more tired. I like the ride length for apocalypse however the trade off is your head... somehow I don't think B&M heart-linned this ride as well as the newer ones. Be careful on the pull out of the corkscrew!!! Unlike GL's which are seemlessly smooth, Apocalypse's on the otherhand... well lets just say your head will understand why it is called Apocalypse.

Roar is a hit or miss... I haven't found a sweet spot... some rides are good and others are not.

The special pricing comes at the perfect time for us as we are planning on going this Sunday. Hopefully it doesn't bring in a heavy crowd. Now all we have to do is find some inexpensive gear. I'm excited for my partner as he has never been on a hang and bang before and he doesn't fully understand the true meaning. Hopefully after making him ride, he doesn't want a divorce. lol

I'm tired as hell and not writing a big thing but park certainly exceeded my expectations. No crappy guests, no issues with employees or ops, park was dead (and actually really nice!!!) and we got a TON of rides in. I took lots of pics and I'll write more tomorrow. I'll end this by saying I rode S:ROS 12 times today and loved every second of all 12 of them. Obviously I need to get to SFNE now. And shouts to vacoaster for finding us and saying hello!
