CP Opening Day Discussion: Downtime On Major Rides

Recommended Posts

Ouch, sounds like Canada's Wonderland today...about a half-dozen rides down (inc. Behemoth) and big crowds...

So CP and CW sounded like Holiday World yesterday. I got there and was waiting for the rope drop. They had announced that Legend would open late. So I was going ot make a dash for Raven. Rope drops and I walk down only to see a ride op standing at the entrance, gates closed and closed sign up. So I make my way to Voyage only to find ride ops standing out of the ride, mat. on the brake run, and a line forming. Ride ops said they didn't know when it would open. So 3/4 coasters closed right at opening. Twenty to thirty minutes later, the coasters are open.

On Six Flags St. Louis opening day, all the coasters were down at one point also.

See, this is why we pretty much STOPPED doing trips early in the season. It just seems that almost no parks have their act together early on anymore. Quite the disappointment indeed.

You are quite right. Couple that with the fact that the weather is so iffy in this general area at this time of the year and it could lead up to one big disappointment. I have been rained out of CP three times in May and eventually stopped going, waiting till later in the summer to make the 3.5 hour trek.

That is why I booked reservations at a hotel near Kennywood. I wanted to do something fun and I am having coaster withdrawl, so I went ahead and booked a room thinking that we could find other fun things to do in the city if the weather fails.

I have such bad luck with theme parks at this time of the year, and the forecast for the weekend in Steel City?? Showers every day with highs in the upper fifties. low sixties! Hey, maybe the park will be less crowded, if it's open!!! NO DOWNPOURS OR LIGHTNING, PLEAAAAASE!!!!!

Yesterday, TTD was closed all day long. At one point in the day, TTD, WT, Mantis, Raptor, Maverick, MaXair (which is still broken from last season and seems to be down long-term), and Skyhawk were all closed. They all opened slowly, one by one, except MaXair (of course) and TTD. They opened TTD with about 35 minutes left before the park closed, and kept the line open until 7:30 pm, a half hour after park closing. Such a great and courteous move by CP, I applaud and praise them for that.

Luckily, they did change their rain policy this season. The only rides that closed in the rain were Maverick (still don't understand that) Gemini, Cedar Creek Mine Ride, and Disaster Transport (the roof leaks), Wildcat, and TTD. I'm not sure if Raptor closes or not still, it was broken down already when the park opened that day. So, the rain wasn't really as big of a problem this time as opposed to on the MidWest Trip, where the park would shut down and they would have to wait for the track to dry....

Yea, nothing like leaving one coaster open an extra 1/2 hour, when 5 of their good coasters were down a portion of the day. Though, I guess it's better than nothing.

It's better than what SFMM used to do with X (they might still be doing it with some rides, I don't know, as I visited 2 years ago). They used to close it's line a couple hours before the park closed so the crew wouldn't be there 1 or 2 hours past closing. Cedar Point would never do such a thing, all rides' lines stay open until the park closes, with the exception of increment weather or mechanical reasons. If they have to run the ride 2 more hours after the park closes, then so be it. I never thought I'd still be walking around Cedar Point yesterday at 8:30, when the park closed at 7:00.

I was at CP on Monday, any hint of rain and EVERYTHING was down. The quickest to start back up.....Gemini. Go figure.

Aww, that sucks. But there may be a difference; the storm that went through opening weekend wasn't a lightning storm (maybe yours was?). Aswell, the policy that they used opening weekend may just be an opening weekend policy, or maybe just a weekend policy. I hope they dont go back to last seasons, that would really suck.

^From what I heard it was a lot of new employees that didn't realize they were supposed to shut the rides down!
I've heard it's a mixture of two things. I know the Raptor crew was entirely new, and they didn't know not to run it in the rain. But I think a high-up who recently moved into the park said the rides are OK to run in the rain this season.

Honestly, I lose more and more faith in the park, and I used to be one of its biggest fan boys. I still love the rides and the charisma the park has, but the operations have gotten stupid.

Do they not realize how many people they piss off with this crap?

I'm crossing my fingers this weekend.

With scattered thunder showers predicted for Saturday and Sunday it could make out to be a crappy weekend.

Though at least Monday looks decent, so I should be able to ride something.

More news on Maverick: Yesterday it valleyed during morning testing. It was after the first roll and before the second. They pulled the train through the rest of the course and had it back open yesterday, but that train sat on transfer all day.

I thought Monday was calling for severe storms...? They are here, anyway, and usually whatever we get, Ohio gets about twice as worse.

Nah, the forcast for Sandusky was scattered Thunderstorms Sat/Sun, Monday was supposed to be sunny.

That's pretty much how it ended up. Monday was cold, but sunny. Saturday it poured on the drive down, but nice in the evening. Sunday was cloudy, and started to rain mid-late afternoon.

It was supposed to rain our whole trip. It rained for about 10 minutes on Sunday and that's about it. The rest of the trip it was super sunny (I got sunburns to prove it), so don't be too sure about the forecast.

I know that.

I was there the same days you were.
