Rim Runner Leaving Las Vegas

Recommended Posts

I believe any talk of imploding the Circus Circus always involved leaving the Adventuredome intact and integrating it as part of the new hotel. I think this is a mute point for now given the state of the economy and MGM Mirage's outflow with their current projects.

This park has been extremely successful (unlike MGM Grand Adventures)and they have continued to add rides over the past several years. I have been travelling and haven't been since early 2007, but didn't they add a discus ride last year in place of the clown show?

I also agree that they will need to be careful in the construction as to not mess up the "theming" inside of the dome. My guess is that they will have to reconstruct parts of the mountain in order to make everything look right. Either way I am excited about this news.

No, Canyon Blaster never received new trains, they were just painted pink and one car was removed per train. The original trains had 7 cars. The trains now have 6.

I also believe that Rim Runner was made by Arrow. Can anyone else confirm that??

^ I did a little research (which I really should have done first). Wikipedia says that Rim Runner is an Arrow Dynamics ride. I thought "Vekoma" because of the final drop's similarity to the Jurassic Park rides with the conveyor belt thing before the drop. I didn't think Arrow did that on its flumes---regular or large ones. Research will continue.

But I think that the Adventuredome should still have some sort of water ride, even another flume---just not a splashwater type.

I just visited the Adventuredome yesterday and while Rim Runner was closed, they appeared to be doing maintenance work on it. There were absolutely no signs of it being torn out or of any new rides going in. When I asked one of the employees, she told me that Rim Runner had been open very recently. My guess is that they have postponed any major additions given the state of the economy.

Has anyone heard any other news about this at all?

This is boat 5 from the Rim Runner at the Adventuredome. It was sitting in the parking lot behind Circus Circus next to Industrial Road. It had markings all over it that said cracks, and there was a note saying major crack in the hull. It looks like it was here to be scrapped. I haven't been inside the Dome in quite a while, I will head over there tomorrow to see if anything is going on with the ride.

Aww, this is sad. I really liked the way it was, right in the canyon. Everyone would always watch the huge splash, and it was definately one of the Adventuredomes major rides. Hopefully something decent replaces it. And good thing I got to ride this.

I'm still not convinced that they are taking it out. They have several boats and the dome is seldom busy enough to warrant them using more than just one or two of them. When I was there in early November it appeared that they were doing maintenance on the lift.

MGM Mirage is in some trouble financially and I just don't see them progressing with what would be a major construction project inside of the dome until business pics up again. With that said, I hope they rip that thing apart and add another good coaster, because they have run out of room to add small flat rides inside. The park needs some change!

I agree with that as well. I will head to the park tomorrow and see whats up.

The most I have ever seen them run on Rim Runner is 3 boats.

I do remember back in the day when the front and back rows were open. That is when no one on the boat would stay dry. The only people who seem to get wet is the people who sit on the right side of the boat.

I just find it interesting that the boat is sitting in plain site.

I say good riddence. Adventuredome was in desprate need for a new coaster and I am jumping for joy! The new coaster is most likely going to open in june 2009. R.I.P. Rim Runner and welcome to the club Gerstlauer!

Yeah I pretty much agree, Rim Runner was fine for a coaster, but when you have an indoor park, you can't expect to have expansions and not take anything out. I'm glad their expanding, and it was probably necessary to make room.

Plus Gerstlauer spinners are perfect for indoor parks, small and compact, yet awesomely fun and family friendly.

YAY Gerstlauer!!!!

That boat has been sitting there for a few weeks. They recently replaced some components on the lift as well, so I don't think the ride is going anywhere so soon.

They had 5 boats, but (at least when I worked there) could only operate up to three at any given time.

3 boat operation was stressful enough due to the short distance between the drop and the station. Wait too long to dispatch and SPLASHDOWN in the station.

Yah I have seen that splashdown before. Like I said before, I can't remember them running more than two trains in the past few years. I am sure they probably have, but the park doesn't ever seem that busy. I agree that the Rim Runner will probably be there for a while as I saw them working on the lift first hand a couple of months ago.

On expanding the park with more rides. I haven't been there in awhile. But can't they put some coasters/flume rides outside in the parking lot with the cue lines and stations inside the dome? This could mean bigger and better coasters, etc.

I was at the Adventuredome to get my Canyon Blaster credit on the 22nd of December. Rim Runner was closed, but all of the signs and markings (i.e. the park map) still had it listed.

It honestly looked like they could just turn on the water and it would be good to go, but I didn't really take the time to stop and look around much. It was pretty much park, get credit, and leave.

The rumors that I heard about them tearing the Circus Circus down always involved leaving the Adventuredome in tact. It is a money maker for them. Of course, everything was just a rumor so who knows. This is the same company who butchered MGM Grand Adventures until there was nothing left!

I feel that parks need to value their water rides a little more. If the Rim Runner does indeed go another way to cool off in Las Vegas will be lost.

At one point, the strip had four water rides (excluding the Venetian's Grand Canal Gondolas)

Now they will have none.

To think that we've lost The Edge, Grand Rapids, The Nile River Adventure and soon the Rim Runner really sucks.

Not to mention Wet N' Wild.

I think water rides are an important part of a well-rounded ride collection and parks all over seem to be forgetting that as we see more and more water rides removed. (HersheyPark, Carowinds, Cedar Point, Kings Dominion, and more.)

I miss the old Rim Runner with all of it's theming intact.

Does anyone have pictures of the old theming? Or pictures of the ride in it's closed state?

Rim Runner was my favorite ride until I turned ten so it holds quite a bit of sentimental value for me.

Here's a small update from earlier tonight. I stopped by the dome just like I said I was going to do yesterday. The park was very empty and all of the kiosks and little stores in the park were closed. The park seemed very much like a ghost town. When I got into the park Disk O was broken down and maintenance got the ride going again. Inverter was closed with no power to it. So I decided to head around to check out Rim Runner. And it was closed. Here are some photos from my visit to the dome.

Does anyone remember the original advertising for Adventuredome? There used to be a catchy little song.

The park used to be called Grand Slam Canyon, and the tag line was Adventuredome. I like the original name much better!!

In the previous post, the mention of how Rim Runner used to be. I remember the Dinosaurs that used to spit water at the riders. They were replaced by Chaos. There used to be fog on the lift hill and bats. All that remains there are some cobwebs and LED lights to look like bats eyes. The rock that used to tilt at the top of the lift also does not work anymore.

Empty station, normally when I have ever seen this ride closed there was a boat in the station.

Sadly, despite being by far the worst major hotel on the strip, the entire property is a cash cow for MGM. Especially now that Excalibur and Circus Circus are the only cheap/family hotels left!

Unfortunately this is the truth. I believe the economy in Vegas would be doing a little bit better if there were a couple things for families to do as well. I really miss Wet 'N Wild. There are no real mini golf places only. The only major one I know about is inside Adventuredome. Scandia was closed for guess what? Condos. The only other family thing to do is far from the strip and that is the Las Vegas Mini Gran Prix.

The condo craze and moves by all of the casino owners towards drawing in more upscale clientele has really hurt Las Vegas in terms of being a family destination. I do believe they will some day soon have to do something about Circus Circus though. Excalibur is only twenty years old, but the Circus Circus is almost in complete disrepair as it just turned forty years old. Nothing has been done to the actual hotel or casino since I was a little kid.

I hope that Las Vegas can find a balance between upscale properties, with still some things to do for families. I think if they are going to experience the growths in tourism that they want, Las Vegas casinos are going to need both demographics. Who knows, Las Vegas seems to reinvent itself every 10 to 15 years anyway. Maybe the family friendly craze will return. One can only hope!
