Recommended Posts

Just saw this on the news!

I'm pretty sure this is legitimate.

Too bad its for sale, wonder what the fate of the rest of the pier is?

It says on Ebay that 50% of the money goes to the Special Olmypics of So Cal. So right now that means 25,000 dollars! Im sure Ellissa will be glad to hear that

Quote from Ebay seller

The Pacific Wheel debuted May 1996 with the opening of Pacific Park and was adapted as the world’s first solar-powered Ferris wheel in November 1998. The nine-story tall Pacific Wheel was later selected “Best Solar System” in the Reader’s Digest Best in America 2006.

Forever in the spotlight, the Pacific Wheel has over 300 celebrity appearances including 105 photo shoots, 71 television commercials, 69 television shows, 28 feature films, 13 music videos and top billing and appearances in television’s most popular programs.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a historical Ferris wheel of your own that has been associated with the Los Angeles skyline during local TV newscasts, sporting events, and programs like The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and American Idol.

You are bidding on Pacific Park’s high-flyin’, 90-feet-tall, famous Ferris wheel, which weighs 122,000 pounds, is 30 feet wide, reaches speeds of 3 RPM, includes 20 gondolas with a maximum six riders per car, accommodates up to 800 riders per hour and illuminates with 5,392 light bulbs. Please note: Base support structure of Wheel is not included in price and can be purchased separately, if buyer so chooses. One Pacific Wheel hub included in sale. Other hub donated to Santa Monica Historical Society.

Additional specifications include 8 AC motors; total power requirement is 110 kw with motor at 50 kw and lights at 60 kw; lighting at 120 volt programmed; and minimum/maximum line voltage is 440-480 volt, 3 phase wye, 60 hz.

The Ferris wheel originally cost approximately $800,000. It has become a Southern California icon over the past 12 years and has provided more than 3 million rides over the beautiful Santa Monica bay.

The reserve is set at $50,000 with 50 percent of the winning bid being donated to Special Olympics Southern California.

The wheel base is not included. Chance Morgan, Inc. (www.chancemorgan.com), in Wichita, Kan., is the original manufacturer of this Ferris wheel and the wheel base.

Buyer and/or winning bidder pays for all shipping and handling fees for Ferris wheel and/or supporting wheel base.

Payment must be made no later than 10 days after close of auction.

Financial arrangements to be made between buyer and Santa Monica Amusements, LLC..

No PayPal accepted.

Why are they taking this one of a kind Ferris Wheel out? And where are the solar pannels located?

Because it wasn't holding up too well with all the salt. The new wheel is made of a different metal and will have LED lighting as well.
