Theme Park Review's 4th Annual Coaster Video Contest!

Recommended Posts

Jeremy Kohrs’ Hoodie: The Movie

This video is one of the most original videos in the contest. It breaks away from the "music video" format found in the other videos. It was funny and had some great shots of Castles N Coasters. The only problem I found was that it did end a bit abruptly. Also, the last bit seemed to lose a little momentum. Overall, I liked this video.

9/10

Erik Johnson’s Dollywood

Overall, the video showed off the park nicely. It showed the different things you can do in the park, including a few shows. I would have liked to see more of the Country Fair flat rides, though. I think this is also the first time I've seen a POV of the Veggietales Coaster! The video is at a slower pace than some of the other videos in the contest (including mine), but that's not a bad thing. The only problem I had with the video was mashing two songs into the video. It's like Erik ran out of time on the first song, but he had more footage. The solution: use another song! I'm not a big fan of the music (I know, Dolly Parton songs are revelant to Dollywood), but it seemed to work OK in the video.

8/10

Tom Mueller’s Heide Park

First off, whenever I see Tom smile, I can't help but laugh! I liked the montage of people making goofy faces at the camera at the beginning and end of the video. I like how the video showed off the ride and the fun antics of the people that rode them. Maybe this video needed more of Tom's smile so we can all crack up!

9/10

Fredric Molitor’s Weekend Airtime

While I watched the video, I was really digging it. I was digging the music, the shots, the friends, and the shots of Black Mamba. I was really enjoying the video and how it showed off the park, then it ended abruptly! I was ready to see more of the park, but it ended suddenly. We see the credits and people riding the bus. The video was pretty good, but it could have been at least 2 minutes longer. I want more!

7/10

Jon LoCoco’s Cedar Point

I thought this was a pretty solid video and it showed off Cedar Point well. There weren't any people doing fun antics, but that's OK for this video. The great shots of the park made up for it. I don't think Jon showed every roller coaster and other flats, but it's difficult to do so with so many rides and coasters at Cedar Point. It's a fun video that shows off Cedar Point well.

Erik - I know the music was in keeping with the Dollywood atmosphere but it absolutely killed me.

I absolutely loved the first half of The Hoodie: The Movie. If it could have maintained its momentum throughout the whole 5 minutes...

OMG...I'm not the only one! Other than that Erik, your videos are always so good. I have to agree on Hoodie too. About halfway through the Castles & Coasters footage it loses it touch. It may be partly my fault to though, I've only watched that video about a hundred times in the past year.

Here's how I ranked this last round, (and it was the hardest round of them all!).

1) Tom Mueller - Your videos are always so much fun, they make me want to jump on a plane, and join you guys on a trip. 10/10

2) Jeremy Kohrs - As already mentioned...easily the most original of the bunch, it just loses it near the end. 9/10

3) Jon LoCoco - Just an all-around solid video. Good angles on Maverick, and good coverage of the other rides at CP. 8/10

4) Erik Johnson - Death-by-Dolly! But good coverage of the park nonetheless. 7/10

5) Frederic Molitor - Really like your video, knew it was gonna be short, but in the end, was still disappointed by how quickly it ended. I was just really getting into it when the credits began rolling. 7/10

Aww.... My video(s) didn't get in. Don't suppose anyone will enlighten me on what I did wrong? I'm guessing one of them didn't get in because I went past the 5min limit, but what about the other one?

Anyways, good vids all around. It is late so I won't be doing a list of the best now, but I just wanted to put this question up incase it went missing by mistake.

/Edward

Yeah, the 5 minute rule is a strict one. It would have been disqualified even if it was just a few seconds over the limit.

Round 6

Jeremy

I loved this video when you first put it on TPR. I just love how you throw in a lot of TPR inside jokes. I think this is one video that competes with Guy’s “It came from the 4th Dimension” video and most original and very clever. This is by far the most original video in this contest. I still don’t see why going to Castle’s N Coasters is fun though? But since that’s the only theme park we got here in AZ, we have to deal with it. Great video.

Erik

I must say that I am beginning to really like your videos a lot. At first I thought they were kind of boring but I just love how you show the entire atmosphere of the park and you do that in every video you make. Some people choose to do TPR antic type videos, other do straight coaster videos, but you really do a great job at showing the atmosphere of parks and I love Dollywood. Maybe change the song next time.

German Tom

Great video! I think this is probably my favorite out of the entire bunch. I love the people mixed with coaster shots and the quick edits to the music. Not a fan of that song at all but you edited your video nicely around the music. I like the end where Colossos is going backwards and the music sounds like it rewinding…nice touch.

Frederic

I wish your video was a little longer. What you have, though, for the short amount of time was very interesting. You had some nice edits and some great shots of the park and especially Black Mamba. I just wish that there was a little more to it. Great job showing people having fun at the park while showing great coaster shots.

Jon Lococococococo

Nice video. Love the song, love the shots. The only thing that seemed a little off was the editing to the song. It looked like you wanted to chance shots when the music changed notes but it seemed the shots were a tad late to the music (maybe it’s the rum talking). Anyway, this video really makes me want to go back to Cedar Point. As I said with Erik’s video, I think you really do a great job at showing coasters at parks and that’s what I like about your videos. Good job.

i actually liked the "Wetter" video. it was different. Showed off those great water rides that never get there justice of Fame. Dudley Do Rite Rules! and it showed a collection water rides from different parks, instead of 1 video of 1 park

^ I actually thought you did a really good job with the re-edit. I'll be honest it doesn't end as good as the original...BUT the idea and theme is still there and it comes across perfect.

Odd. Darren Baily's was 5:03.

Btw, even if one of my videos didn't make it through because it was 5:57, what about the other one that was just 4:32? What happened to that one? Why didn't that one make it?

^ Please read the thread. Your comment about Darren's video was already addressed on page two:

I noticed that the play time was 5:03, but that's probably my computer playing at the wrong speed. Covered the Midwest trip fairly well

The video ended at 4:59, but there was a little credit thing on the end that I made the judgement call to leave on there.

Thanks for pointing it out, but leave the video moderating to us please!

Which two videos were yours?

EDIT - Ahh, yes. I found them. We encountered a weird error where opening them in Premiere or Movie Maker only opened them as audio files.

As you can see below the properties for your video matched against other videos were very different.

We had so many videos to go through that if we ran across a video that didn't work, we simply had to skip it, sorry.

Well I decided to give my $0.02 on all the entries that have made the cut. This is just my critique. Please don’t take offence to anything I say.

Round 1

Barry Hom's Alton Towers Video

First off, personally, I hated the song. I made a bad impression on me, so bad that I would find my self unconsciously singing it at work. It also made the video feel like it was dragging along. Other than that, it was good. The video was cut well with the music. Though stalking Elissa, as everyone else said, was getting old near the end.

Darren Bailey's TPR Midwest Trip

I liked the video, it had some really funny parts to it. I think the song you picked also fit in very well. Your editing was good but you need to turn down the music when people are speaking. I found it difficult to understand what they said.

Kevin Aglione's Cedar Point

I though this video was well put together. I was a little disappointed to not see House come out at the beginning and say that the disease was autoimmune. Just kidding. I liked how everything was slow for the first half but I think your should have made it all black and white. Then your transition to the second half was great. Though I didn’t care much for the song, you cut the video to it very well.

Dave Thomas' UK Randomness

I though the video was fun and funny. I liked the “I’m a tree! With a camera!” I found that very funny for some reason. The commercial in the middle was a funny touch but it really broke the flow of the video. I would have stuck that at the end.

Pam & Brian Kanal's Knoebel's PPP

Sorry, but I found this slow and kind of boring. If the song was a little faster it would have probably made a difference. Also the editing really didn’t match the song. There where random cuts all over the place.

Round 2

Cody Kempema's Tatsu

The video was nice but it felt a little too long. The pace was very slow and it felt like you showed the same thing over and over and over and over and over…. It felt like you stayed on the pretzel loop for 20 mins. I did like the 4 or 5 quick cuts you did with the music though.

Matthew Tentnowski's Six Flags Great Adventure

I didn’t think this one was that great. The music was too loud and because of that I could hear or understand what anyone said. Also, I found the editing to be horrible. It just seemed like your let the editing program sort the clips out for you and your just through is a music track. Sorry.

Ryan Vesely's Disneyland2

This was a good video. I liked the effect at the beginning with the trail thing. The pacing was good too. The editing was also good, it went well with the music but I think you might have stayed on some things a little too long, like the creepy guy in the black hoodie.

JimmyBo's PortAventura

I very much enjoyed this video. I liked the song, and your editing to the song was impeccable. You also combined stills with the video very well. The audio balance was great too, I could under stand everything that was said, including when you said “mierda” on the stopped coaster. I found that to be really funny too, but that may be just because I understand Spanish.

Justin Saxe's Dollywood/Six Flags Over Georgia

Another video I enjoyed. And another I feel had excellent synchronization with the song. This one also had an excellent balance with the audio. I also found the end funny, “Kiddy coaster...whores” and for some reason this video made me hungry.

Round 3

Peter Davies' Camping & Coasters

This video was pretty good. I think some of the shots could have been executed a little better, such as having the subject (the coaster) centered. With the “All of this can be yours” or how ever it goes, part I would have shown different images and video from around the park(s), not just the overview of a lake. Also the timing with the “yeah” at the end was off. But other than that it was pretty good. I really liked that graphic at the end too with the coaster going through the tent. One thing I didn’t get though what the thing after that. Just sounded like a laugh and a fart to me.

Adam Roth's Theme Park Entry 2006

First off, I don’t know if that’s how you filmed it or if that just how it’s displayed, but to me this video seemed like it was filmed on a digital still camera. The editing was good but I found the pacing slow, so it felt long and drawn out. And for some reason the music at the opening and ending credits reminded me of Super Mario Sunshine.

Matt Jacobs' Indiana Beach

Again, I don’t know if that’s how you filmed it or if that just how it’s displayed, but to me this video seemed like it was filmed on a digital still camera. I found some of the shots to be kind of boring and uneventful. Also, I think the transitions where a little overused. A simple wipe or fade will do just fine in most cases.

Jordan Ryle's Disneyland

Uhh, I didn’t get most of it. I just couldn’t grasp what was going on. The whole West Side Story snapping thing went completely over my head. The editing wasn’t all that great either. I think this could have turned out a little better if I could understand the inside jokes.

Jan Andreen's Europa Park

First, I think the song choice was not the best. Honestly, I don’t see coasters and theme park stuff fitting with that song at all. That having been said, the footage was pretty good but I feel the audio balance and the editing could have been executed a little better.

Round 4

Bruno Lancetti's Expedition GeForce

I felt this video was very uneventful and extremely repetitive. I don’t know how many times you showed the first drop one after the other in a row. It was also a very slow moving video in my opinion. And the music was kind of weird. It started off porno then went Incredible Hulk like towards the end. I did like some of the effects, though, that you threw in at the end, like the old film style effect.

Kevin Gillan's "Opening Segment"

Wow! I really don’t know what to say other than I want to see more. It was a good mix of footage. And the dancing security guard was very funny. Good Job with this one, I really enjoyed it.

Nicolas Chavance's Parc Asterix

This was another video I enjoyed. The editing was great. I thought the speech bubbles were cool, even though I couldn’t understand what they said. I thought the thing with the tunnel, looking forward going in then back coming out, was really cool.

Chris Charles' PortAventura Halloween

This was a nice video. It had a good combination of stills mixed with the video. Some of your effects were great. I especially liked the trails behind Dragon Kahn. The footage of the fountain with the colors changing in the background was a little long though in my opinion. And to top it all off, the soundtrack fit well with the theme. Halloween event, Halloween song, Whoda thunk it!

Dave Madore & Tomi Zandshtein's TPR Midwest Trip

This was a pretty good video. It had some nice editing though it was had to hear some of the stuff said. I found it to have a large element of fun in it. One thing that really bugged me was that you were just about to say something on the shot of Top Gun and you cut it off. I didn’t get the little animation at the end and I would have gone with e completely different song.

Round 5

Andy Korb's Parc Asterix

This was a good video. The editing was well played and I liked how almost every time the song mentioned cartoons your showed cartoon characters or costume characters. It felt a little long and drawn out though, but it had a good pace.

WillMontu's "Wetness"

I liked the little intro at the beginning for the different types of wetness, but the main video was a little long. The song made it seem longer than it really was. Plus you cut near the end with the music was a little off beat. I liked the “This is an unacceptable amount of wetness” part when you showed everyone saying it while they here soaked. Sorry to hear about your camera too dude.

Matthew Hicks' Drayton Manor

I enjoyed this video. The editing was really good and went well with the music. There where a couple of times were I think a fad would have been appropriate rather than a quick cut to the next clip. I liked how you pointed yourselves out on the rides but my favorite park was the slow motion switch from black and white to color, that was cool.

Norman Snook's Déjà vu (My own video)

The only thing I have to say about mine with the twin spike thing. I got a tripod for next time I try something like that.

Mark Owens' Hong Kong Disneyland

This was a well executed video. Your timing with the music was perfect. Even some of the clips you showed went well with what was going on or being said in the song. The only thing was when you where showing the Tarzan stuff and the music was kind of slow I would have used some fades between clips. Good job.

Round 5

Jeremy Kohrs' Hoodie: The Movie

This was very original. It was a really good concept, reminded me of The Matrix in a way, but I think the editing was a little poor. The sound quality was pretty bad too. I couldn’t under stand what was being said most of the time. The IM’s where kind of hard to read to, some of them went by too fast. I though when the guys where screaming in front of their computers like they where on a coaster and the one guy disappeared from the ride was pretty funny, but I was expecting the sister to put the hoodie on when she took it off.

Erik Johnson's Dollywood

I’m sorry, but this has to be one of the most boring videos I have ever watched. The songs just made it seem to last forever. The editing was good, but the music, that was the failing point. It was better when I watched it the second time…on mute. Sorry dude.

Tom Mueller's Heide Park

This was a good video. You followed your cuts with the song perfectly and I could tell there was a large element of fun. I liked your editing style too

Frederic Molitor's Weekend Airtime

This was a pretty good video. The cuts with the music were good and the editing was nice but the song made the pacing feel a little slow, though it did finish a little quicker that I expected.

Jon LoCoco's Cedar Point

This video was good. The pacing was great. The editing was a little off. Some of the cuts between clips with the music were a little off and some clips had too much lead in or out. Other than that is was pretty good.

Like I said earlier, this is just my two cents. Please don’t take offence to anything I say. I’m just saying what I thought and what I would do to make some things a little different. All of them had their ups and downs (no pun intended, ok, maybe it was a little), some more that others, but some people maybe just starting out with video editing. If you are then with some practice you’ll just keep getting better and better. Just make sure to have people watch your videos and get their opinion so you know what to do differently on the new ones you make.

-Norm

Adam Roth's Theme Park Entry 2006

First off, I don’t know if that’s how you filmed it or if that just how it’s displayed, but to me this video seemed like it was filmed on a digital still camera. The editing was good but I found the pacing slow, so it felt long and drawn out. And for some reason the music at the opening and ending credits reminded me of Super Mario Sunshine.

I'd like to thank you for the honest comments, as that is exactly what I look for when I make my videos. I actually didn't submit this year's video (the edit that I had ready by the time entries were due) because I wasn't satisfied with the pacing or clips--essentially the video overall.

This entry was my first original video that I entered in my school's film festival, so we were asked in our opening and closing credits to have some sort of audio to test the transitions before the following entry was shown so that the audio levels in the theater could be tweaked to a normal level. For some reason, I didn't end up removing it...

The footage was in fact completely filmed on my Pentax Optio S5i digital camera, and it shows. I do have to admit that when it comes to carrying my camcorder around the parks, I am lazy. I've gotten better about it but I'm still prone to pull out my camera from my pocket and just use that to film. When I have my camcorder on me, I will use it until my battery is drained, but something about carrying it around throughout the day has always had me beat. This Summer's trips will be a real test for me as I will be shooting footage using both cameras on the East Coast USA and RFII/Behemoth tours. I have essentially abandoned my previous edit for the year so that I may wait and collect all of my footage from the three weeks of touring that I will do with TPR, so that I may create a better video than the one submitted.

As for the pacing, I like to see what footage I have when I create a video, then pick a song that would work. My best friend, also Adam, while we were riding the Shinkansen in Japan showed me this song, as I had been piecing together certain clips in my mind on that long trip to Kyoto. After hearing Last Summer, I realized that it could work, so I rolled with it. It was one of those few times where during the editing process, clips just fell into place for me.

Just three little answers to questions previously posed (one wasn't asked, but I figured I'd say it while I can):

1. The credit audio is Waterfall, played in the former Wonders of Life pavilion as well as at the station for the former Skyway building in Magic Kingdom's Tomorrowland. I have a soft spot for the song, so I chose it for my sound check audio for the school film fest. Next time around, I will either leave the video without intro or credit audio, or I will pick something that flows better with the rest of the video.

2. The opening montage of three divers is actually my brother, my father and I diving in Epcot's The Seas with Nemo and Friends Pavilion (formerly The Living Seas). That was the dive that took place during my birthday that year.

3. The end clip right before the 5 minute mark is from the 2006 TPR visit to Orlando for Halloween. I was extremely lucky to be allowed to meet up during the day with the group and that scene was in one of the scare zones, where the group wanted a picture. Guy's camera wasn't working for some reason and the group wanted to go, so I said I got the photo, thinking my camera was in picture mode when it was in fact taking video the whole time. The clip while not as large as some of the others I took that day, was one of the few that had much of the group in one shot, so I included it just as a little "end clip."

Again to everyone that has reviewed my video, I have taken all criticism constructively and will use my lessons learned to make my next video (hopefully) better than this year's. To all video owners for this year's contest, I would like to congradulate you again for your hard work on these fantastic entries, and wish you all luck in the voting period!

I understand what you mean. Thats why I would invest in a small camcorder and a nice pair of cargo pants (or shorts if it's summer). The camera I used to use was a Sony DCR-PC109. Thats the one I used to film my Deja Vu video. It's a nice little camera, It takes great video and it's small and fits easily in a cargo pocket.

My new (and current) camera is a Sony HDR-CX7. It's a great camera. It films full HD 1080 video. And it's small and compact and easily fits in a cargo pocket.

I guess I totally failed with my Dollywood video.  I honestly think its one of the best videos I have done, as it is always my goal to try to show off what a park has to offer/atmosphere.  Yeah, the reason I decided to use Dolly Parton music is that it's simply her park, and I always found that typical pop music/techno used for a Dollywood video to be really out of place.  So I took a chance to try to add "theming" to the music used, that really reflects the atmosphere of the park.  Maybe I should have used gospel music instead.

And, if you have been there you will know this, it is a very laid back park especially when you compare it to a SF or CF park.  So I intentionally made this a slower paced video that included just about everything that the park offers, since this park is so much more than making a 3 minute video of coasters with thumping music.  Sorry that some of you felt it was way too boring, or that it is the most boring park video that you have ever seen.

^Erik, I don't think it's that the people didn't like your Dollywood video...I just think that some people may have saw your awesome Home Version of Toy Stury Mania and thought they were going to get something like that. As I said in my comments of my video, what you do in your video (which in your case is showcases what the park has to offer and the atmosphere) I think you did a really good job. I just think some people on this site are brain washed from seeing Robb and Elissa's videos and expect and fast paced video with faster music. You did an excellent job for what you are comfortable with in making videos.

Editing videos is all about what you are comfortable with and not what people expect your video to be. I just think some people expect more "TPR antic" style videos.

^ What editing software do you use to edit your HD footage with? I recently got a Sony HDR-FX1 and haven't yet tried to mess around with the HD part of it yet.

I use Ulead VideoStudio 11.5 Plus It's easy to use and works really well. But I would recommend getting a bump in memory for editing HD footage, if you don't have much. I have footage from a family trip I took up north and I tried editing some of it on my laptop while I was there and my laptop locked up. I tried it on my desktop when I got home (which has more memory than my laptop) and I could edit everything fine.

Oh dear...

Well, I did say what the format type was and if there was a big problem with it, "do get back to me with that and I'll change it."

^ Right. Sorry. When you have over 100 videos to go through and most of them got it right on the first try, we just didn't have time to go through and get fixes for those that didn't work.

Some people submitted videos via FTP, DVD, and DV Tape. All three formats to ensure their entry worked. And there were times when one format wouldn't work, so we'd try the next option. If there wasn't a next option, we skipped it.

Basically "If it didn't work, it didn't make the cut..." it's as simple as that.

Don't get me wrong about your videos, I've always liked your videos, (proud owner of the Jiggidy Johnson's Vol. 1). The relaxed music for your Dollywood video was very fitting...it really fits the mood of the park. It's just Dolly's voice, I'm sorry but she just has that nails on the chalkboard effect on me.

Hi there !

Thanks for all your constructive comments on my Week-End AIRTIME 2006 video which takes place at Phantasialand.

I do agree that it is too short and I would like to explain why we had

to do so : we had lots of video problems during the trip so that we came back with not enough good footage for a "full lenght" video. So I've chosen a short music from Alan Parsons Project to edit kind of teaser rather than a "regular" coaster video. In the end, except a few more Black Mamba shots, I've really put every good shot we had. I'm sorry if I frustated some of you who wanted more coasters, Phantasialand and fun antics

The contest have interesting and unusual videos. I so love Hoodie the Movie ! Moreover, I really appreciate this year all the comments and reviews on the forum, sharing points of views, ...

Again a nice contest this year !

BTW Robb, the last entries seems to not have been announced yet on the TPR website index.

It was filmed on Hi8. Unfortunately, I bought a camcorder right before MiniDV came out. I didn't research enough back then.

I also discovered that capturing video through Windows Movie Maker is really crappy. I now capture through Sonic, then move it over to Adobe Premiere. The quality is much improved, and I'm not sure why.

As I said, before. Completely agree on the overuse of transitions. I got a bit too excited about their use!

I guess I totally failed with my Dollywood video.

I don't think you totally failed. It had some good shots of the park and showed it off nicely. It's just the music that I really didn't like. It was two songs crammed together into one video. I don't think that worked, IHMO. I also think too much country music is used for Dollywood. Personally, I tihnk AC/DC works with Dollywood, oddly enough.

Just like to thank everyone for the comments on our entry- Chris Charles Portaventura halloween,

Sorry i could not do this before as we have been a in florida for the last 3 weeks, but 2 things i would like to point out.

It is in fact Cris Charles (no h in Cris)

and second, seems some people did not get the spanish music, or why we used the spanish version to "this is halloween". This version was the one they used for the parade and we think it fitted the feel for this event at this park, but if you want to see another version of the video with the english version of "this is halloween" please view youtube via this link-

Thank you all again,, and we are glad we made the final 30, good news to come home to.
