Hersheypark (HP) Discussion Thread

From the people I know who work at the park you better ride Canyon River Rapids while you still can!

I'll be hoping for something that "drops" the temperature... like a free fall tower!! yeah!! That's all I've ever wanted at Hershey!

But back to reality.. Hershey has all of the water attractions it needs at the Boardwalk.. and the Boardwalk has been a HUGE success (what was it.. a 9% rise in attendence?) so it makes sense that Canyon River Rapids would go.. it has a HUGE footprint easily large enough for a wave pool and a lazy river..

.... and drop tower... themed to a thermometer..

That is all,

Eric

hmm... Good thinking! Since it get's cooler when a thermometer goes down, it would make perfect sense.

Sadly... it'll never happen! It would be cool though! They could get away with a lazy river where Canyon River Rapids was.. and then get this.. a drop tower like Drop Zone at PKD.. only with an awesome red to blue gradient paint job!

It'd be beautiful.. *tear*

"Oh, let the speculations continue . . ."

Hmm, something cooler is coming to season 2009 at Hersheypark with an announcement on July 1, 2008. Already, Hersheypark has the hottest coaster called Fahrenheit and a new flat ride called The Howler coming this season, so what new attraction could Hersheypark add to be "cooler" and will it add or replace a ride in the park?

First clue: look at the location where the sign announcing that new attraction is located. If the new attraction was to an addition to the Boardwalk, then wouldn't the sign be placed there? Instead, the new sign is placed outside the waterway (used for paddle boats) that is between the Superdooperlooper station and section of track from the The Great Bear, possible meaning that the new attraction could be placed there.

Second clue: the Coal Cracker is missing its drop. Now, this could mean that the park is rehabing the log flume drop, or this could mean that the park is planning to replace the Coal Cracker with another attraction, maybe a water coaster.

Third clue: Knowing what attractions the park doesn't have. It does have a Kissing Tower, but not a drop tower, although I cannot see how a drop tower would fit into that area unless they are very crafty by adding a new addition.

In conclusion, I have no idea what the new attraction could be!

So I guess we all have to wait until July 1 and find out.

The reason why it was put there was that area is the busiest section of the park. More people will walk by that area more than back near Rodeo.

They are NOT replacing Coal Cracker. When I went on Saturday, it looked like the whole ride was repainted.

A drop tower would look better in Midway since it's not near the Kissing Tower. That way it won't interfere with the view.

Unknown to many, Hershey already owns a drop tower. It's just in storage. It is not a large one, so I don't see it going in at Hersheypark. dutch wonderland maybe. My first speculation would be to expand the boardwalk. it is immensely popular, but very crowded. They had talked about expanding it in the past, so it certainly is a possibility. I do not think they will replace coal cracker. It is an old ride, but very reliable and takes over a million riders a year. After seeing pics of them refurbing the drop, it shows that they are willing to put the money in to maintaining it.

^That's why I was wondering about a drop tower. But after trying to find a pic of it, the ride doesn't really seem like Dutch Wonderland material since it was 185 feet tall.

Here's a pic I found of it in it's old location down at Miracle Strip.

It all really depends on how far Hershey wants to take the waterpark aspect. There were *rumors* a few years ago that this was only sort of a "tester" to see if a full size waterpark would be worthwhile. Hershey got their answer last year with the huge jump in attendence.

Thats all a rumor, but obviously there's a lot of money to be made in a big waterpark... even a year round market if they did part of a big waterpark indoors. Everyone who lives in central PA knows that there's NOTHING TO DO HERE! (However the new casino at Penn National is pretty cool)

So maybe in a few years the waterpark, which really doesnt have anything that would be too too hard to move to a new location yet, will be located in a seperate park!

That's just something to make you go "Hmmm..."... In my opinion, the annoucement is so early because CRR is on the chopping block and they'll need to close it mid-summer for deconstruction.

And its been far too long with Hershey speculation without a map illustrating everything! Sadly, looking at it from above.. if they are going to expand the waterpark.. CRR is right next door. I just hope they leave some of the trees!

From screamscape.com

(4/11/08) In addition to some shots of the Coal Cracker being worked on, many readers have spotted a new “Something Cooler Is Coming” sign, listing that the 2009 annoucement will take place on July 1st. It seems that this may be the announcement that the rapids will be removed to make way for the new wave pool expansion previously rumored. We’ve also heard that Rodeo is also likely to be removed by the end of the season as well.

I can actually beleive this since they boarded off half of Rodeo's queue line last year. Last time I checked the blocked off section is still there.

(4/25/08) Screamscape sources have confirmed that the plan is still to convert the park’s River Rapids ride into a couple of new waterpark attractions for the Boardwalk. The general idea is still to add a large river attraction (lazy or swift) using sections of the old rapids ride and to turn the central reservoir area into a new wave pool. Apparently the area will also feature a new food stand as well as several cabanas for rent. I’ve added an aerial shot of the current rapids area for reference, though I’m not sure how they’re going to work in the Roller Soaker flying over-head, though it makes a perfect addition.

And it also seems like there will be a new Nantimi game for this attraction(s). CRR's future looks bleak, so get your last rides in before it's gone!

I've never been on the Canyon River Rapids, but Im gonna be at Hersheypark around the first weekend of July and want to make sure I get to go on it. One thing about it is I've never really been able to figure out where the queue starts. Like when you go towards the Midway and Boardwalk you pass by the really long switchbacks, but I never see the acgtual enterance...where is it?

And my other question, when will it close?

We have some new rumors fresh from the screamscape site:

(5/13/08) A little new information about the 2009 Boardwalk expansion has come my way. In addition to the new Wave Pool and Lazy River that we’ve been talking about for some time, there are plans to add one or two new slides to the Coastline Plunge. The slide(s) will leave from the top of the tower where Riptide and Vortex depart from and drop off into the same splashdown pool as well which was designed in advance with an empty spot for expansion.

This seems very likely since the area around the slides has empty footers and unused supports.

Sorry to bring back an old topic, but I just had a question. Im going to be there next week and its supposed to be in the upper 80's. But, does anyone know long does the line for Canyon River Rapids generally get on hot days? Like, is it really long?
