California Great America (CGA) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Haunt only lasted two years at Geauga Lake under Cedar Fair and the season was cut back to opening on Memorial Day weekend so that WWK would also open with the park, The season ran through mid-September when the final weekend would be the park's annual Oktoberfest (which was always a popular event that CF sort of screwed up after taking over).

GL's last season ran from memorial day to labor day. I'm not sure if they ever had haunt or not though. GL was doomed as a full scale amusment park the moment CF bought it. It was simply to close to Cedar Point. In my opinion CGA's problems have a ton to do with the neighbors and the fact that the park sits on leased land.

GL was doomed from the moment Premier parks decided to aqquire SF & rebrand the park only to neglect it just a few short years later.

I came across this on Screamscape today, more Invertigo parts leaving...This picture however looks much like a giant banana on a flatbed.

After reading some extremely hard to read post on CGA's Facebook (See my post in GP thread about GIB's), someone else posted this:

It's the movie, Getting Even with Dad, where there's a few shots of CGA in the 90's.

It's cool to see with all this stock footage of CGA in the past that at one point this park was popular. Sad to see the state that its in now. Even though the underlying theme of this particular thread had been for the past few weeks to wait for the park to close, it's still sad to see a park that could be so much more than it is.

Honestly, I'm not sure. The only images we've seen are from a couple employees nabbing pictures from the lot, or followers getting pictures on the street. I wouldn't be surprised if most of it is already disassembled. My guess is that when it opens on the 27th, it could either be completely gone, or have a few loose ends to take out. I'm sure the station platform could be still standing as well as the queue...though I'd rather see the site completely flattened (hopefully ready for a new attraction).

Just to irritate the GP, I say that that pic should be posted on CGA's Facebook. Speaking of which, I don't think one of the users liked my comment as they were 'recommending' that CGA should get a Giant Inverted Boomerang/Deja Vu. I stepped in and said that honestly that would be kind of pointless especially with the reliability issues they often are cursed with...and really, it would be awkward to replace a coaster with another of the 'same/similar type.' It's somewhat like "Let's replace Flight Deck with another B&M Invert with a strikingly similar layout!" (Actually, please don't!)

I agree, actually that would be kind of stupid.

Link me to that page, I want to see what you are talking about so I can laugh.

On CGA's facebook a person wrote on their wall saying they had a current picture of Invertigo and what was left. I couldn't believe what was left it was just all rubble. I have included the picture down below. I know it is not the best photo but it shows us whats left.

Well, one post starts as this from a pic I posted:

Kid"

N000000000000000000 i luv dat c0aster itz numba 1 in ma r0ller c0aster list...PLEEEEEEEZ bring it bakk dont take it to dorney park all da way in pensilvania by da way!! datz a pretty l0ng distance. All 0f ma cusins luved dat c0aster n dey are scared 0f r0ller c0aster fine u can take away invertig0 but u guys shuld put the giant inverted b00merang from vek0ma it l00kz like invertig0 but itz bettr..TRUST ME!!!

Me:

^To be honest, a Giant Invertigo/Inverted Boomerang would be a huge mistake. Those coasters spend most of their times as lawn ornaments as they are almost always experiencing down time. It would be 'Deja Vu' for us anyway, pun completely intended (SFMM in So Cal has a GIB named Deja Vu).

Kid:

aktually i dnt kare wut ppl think if dey SHULDNT put a G.I.B. (like billy d anju) all i kn0 iz dat i wuld like f0r dem tew put a giant inverted b00merang n i dnt kare if derz 0ne in sfmm kalld deja vu.

(Gah, he could have atleast spelt my name right...it's right in front of his face, lol!)

So then later, he posts this as a new post:

U guyz i meen.....You guys should put a GIB (Giant Inverted Boomerang) from Vekoma because in almost all of the amusement parks there is some type of boomerang (from vekoma) there's either boomerang, invetigo, or gib.....N0w if yew agree wit meh den k0ment et 0r klik da "like" thingy, n0w if yew dizagree wit meh den dnt even sey enythin 0r k0mnt it. Thank yew very much.... 0h n i h0pe great amerika lisenz tew meh.

Ok, so he started on the right foot with the above quote then he suddenly got the 10-year-old "I think I'm cool" typing going on. Do kids really think they're really 'cool' "fur typeeng lyike d1s"? Um...no.

I had seen that earlier when I was on facebook, he's posted the same thing twice so far on there, the wording (or lack there of) is slightly different in the two posts, the first of his is above, this is the other one, and to me it was quite painful to read, never quite seen spelling or sentence structure on a level like this before....:

"I hav a great ride f0r great america itz da GIANT INVERTED B00MERANG fr0m vek0ma!!! actually it may l00k like invertig0 but if u ride it itz bettr kuz itz higher. F0 REELZ N0T J0KING PPL....N GREAT AMERICA ahahhaha iz it 0k 2 call great america n tell dem great ideas f0r a new ride 2 replace invertig0??? ANY 1???? ehehhe pleez k0mment bakk ppl n great america by da way my 8th grade class is k0ming in june 8th n i hav a great (funfair) ride2 put wile weer der n aftr dat u can put ma idea!! kuz itz sad if we g0 n ders n0 ride 2 replace invertig0 u could put da ride wile weer der n itz E-Z 2 put kuz itz a funfair ride n E-Z 2take it 0ff 2!! S0RRY IF I RITE 2 MUCH IM JZT S00000 INTERESTED IN GREAT AMERICA!! ahahah"

And I agree also, it would be stupid if they did replace Invertigo with something similar to it, I don't get the logic behind that kid's posting on facebook, I highly doubt Cedar Fair would do such a thing as pointless as that. As for the picture, I should put it on the Great America facebook page, since there seem to not be many of it toward the end of the removal.

As much as I've seen those posts, rereading them has made my eyes vomit... well, not really but the typing/structure is very poor. Shows what our future generation is retaining in school (or lack thereof). And really, I doubt Cedar Fair/Great America would take much of any words from a post like that. I'm certainly not convinced that the park should do such a request. Maybe I should phone the Cedar Fair headquarters and tell them that I made this awesome RCT track inspired by Maverick and would be tickled to see my RCT coaster become a reality.

More back on topic, I'm a bit surprised that efforts were made to demolish the concrete pad, especially when Triple Play, Tidal Wave, Stealth, and Whizzer to name a few still have some remains left over. Perhaps I'm being too positive but maybe that's an early indicator that the site could be getting prepped for a future addition. We'll see how things go as the season rolls along.

Well, when it comes to the concrete at Triple Play, Whizzer, Greased Lightning, and Stealth, it's not out in the open like Invertigo was. Sure they're visible, but not quite like the Invertigo location. Just leaving a huge concrete slab from the queue line and station would look really awkward.

Actually, the Triple Play queue is right there out in the open complete with the roof entrance. Part of this now however is somewhat used for season pass processing. I'm curious as to how Invertigo's plot will look once the season starts, or if it will just be a huge dirt field with covered cyclone fencing surrounding it.
