If people would say , “The capital originally intended for CGA was repurposed for KI instead”, that makes more sense. But saying a coaster went to park A instead of park B... there’s absolutely no way

Oh yeah, no complaints alright. I just hope all this virus crap doesn't affect our 2021.

Just found out not too long ago the parks in our area can reopen but Santa Clara county is forcing them to stay shut. In other news, scbb might be the first to open under newsoms new guidelines.

If the park is going to inconvenience guests with metal detectors, is it too much to ask that the metal detectors catch people bringing f*cking tasers into the park? Otherwise, why have them?

On our way into Dorney last week I accidentally left my keys and phone in my pocket and neither of them set the thing off. Afterwards I joked that you could probably get a grenade launcher through a Cedar Fair metal detector. I've NEVER seen one go off at any of their parks since they got these new ones. They seem to be there to create the illusion of security and for no other reason.

As someone who has worked with the CF metal detectors, it's very hit or miss. There was one guy that came in early in the day, his belt set it off, he left the park, and when he came back in later, silence from the detector. Other times, the detectors have reacted to absolutely nothing at all. So yeah, the metal detectors are more placebolic CYA than anything.

Screening large numbers of people through security checkpoints takes at lot of time and effort. Just look at airport or courthouse security. I've heard rumors of places that have installed barely functional or even fake detectors just for the appearance of security. They go by the theory that most people will be deterred from attempting anything just by the mere presence of security. They justify their actions by saying that people who actually intend to do harm will find a way despite security measures. Now I doubt that CF or any other large theme park goes by this philosophy. I think it's more likely that these folks simply found a way around the system because they intended to do harm.

I used to work on repair/maintenance of metal detectors. The sensitivity levels are set per the users standards. Ie, a courthouse has a much higher setting than say, a Chuck E Cheese. There are other variables too such as being able to mask metal objects so what may not have passed once will pass the next time. (again, sensitivity levels) Another factor is that the detectors do need to be regularly recalibrated. Again, that depends on the users needs of how secure and how often they need or want it to be. Basically a courthouse wants tight limits whereas an amusement park generally would have a more relaxed standard.

Funny you bring Dorney into this...... a guest actually pulled a gun on an actor in one of the haunts a few weeks ago.

Okay yeah... so calibration and sensitivity levels aside, if you can get guns and tasers through the metal detectors are they even plugged in?

How is there even a setting on a metal detector that makes it that completely useless?

TASER-branded devices (the type that actually shoot out the probes) are probably 90% plastic and wouldn't set off a metal detector that was set low enough to not activate at pocket change, as most theme parks' are.

I use to work there and I know people who work there.

Did they use tasers or stun guns? Because a taser can't be reused unless you remove the prong cartridge and pop on a new one. Which means they not only snuck in tasers but also a handful of prong cartridges each.

While you'd have to put in a new cartridge to use the prongs/deployment, you can "drive stun" a TASER without a cartridge for pain compliance and to create that distinctive loud arcing sound commonly associated with electronic immobilization devices. Reading a few news stories on the incident, it looks like the suspects used a lot of strong-arm tactics, which would make the drive stun method more likely if they were in-fact TASERs.

It is common for the media to inaccurately report any electronic immobilization device as a "TASER" but it is possible the suspects used TASERs without cartridges.

So, basically the Dippin' Dots Guy. Cool.

I'll wait until the press reports it.

That's usually my attitude too, but in this case he generally knows what he's talking about.

A woman with a stun gun gets into a park and then numerous fights break out...at a f%cking amusement park...seriously?

Can anyone go have fun anywhere anymore without having to worry about fights, shootings or mass death? I know that this isn't the first time that a fight has broken out at a park, but this one just sickens me. Likely just because all of the other unnecessary evil that is slowly spreading over this world like the plague lately.

More and more people in this world just flat out suck anymore. Good grief, this violence is getting so over-the-top crazy in every way - it has to STOP!

The state of this world with violence today is so upsetting. I just had my first visit at Las Vegas in September and caught myself still looking both directions when crossing even though we had the right away due to cars just plummeting people (exactly a week before that horrible mass shooting). Very scary times today.

Bay Area has had problems like this. We have plenty of transportation options, allowing teens & young adults access to almost everywhere in mass. One of the things I love about living here is that it’s easy to get around with friends. We recently had at least two mass robberies in the past few months and sad to say I’m not shocked, only upset by this story. I came from a rough neighborhood & thought we were bad, but I realize we truly have nothing on these younger ones today. Great America is what we would call a “teenybopper” park too, although greatly transforming, and I can totally see why Great America was the place for these sociopaths to let out their rage.

I’m sure they had the plastic tasers as some have explained on here. I honestly don’t know much as I don’t own one, but I have plenty of friends who do. You can separate then device & just hook the thing that powers the device with your keys. Therefore, the metal part would be blending in with your keys & the taser/stun gun would just be mostly plastic. I want to say be careful of your surrounding, but it’s absolutely sad & ridiculous to feel this way at a themepark where you’re supposed to be enjoying time with family & friends. I remember security randomly following my group around as a teen just by profiling, they might have to start doing that again.

^ Just a side note to say, I visited the Bay Area recently and was truly shocked that drivers actually paid attention to crosswalks. It took me a while to get used to the fact that I actually had the right of way, walking, in a crosswalk. In most parts of the US a crosswalk means- make the sign of the cross when trying to get to the other side and hope you make it.

^ For the same reason someone brings gun into a church or school. To cause trouble and mayham. They probably would have snuck in guns if they could have. SFMM was one of the first parks to start installing detectors because they had problems with gangs bringing weapons in and causing trouble.
