California Great America (CGA) Discussion Thread

P. 476: Cedar Fair sells park land, CGA to close within the next 11 years

Recommended Posts

The Planet Snoopy area has been redone/remodeled so much I think the other areas were getting jealous. I'd rather have them invest along with the themed area music coming back, with bringing back the theming like the Orleans Place lettering back on the brick entranceway, the County Fair Archway sign, and the 1950s Covertible by American Cafe in the "50's area" (old school CGA peeps know what I'm taking about) to name a few, Pictorium back up and running, and yes new paint and new paint job for Vortex please!

^ I actually specifically spoke to them about the possibility of ditching Kidzville for a large Planet Snoopy since CGA is one of the last CF parks to have the separate kids areas next to each other. They were pretty frank with me and said that right now there hadn't even been whispers about that potentially happening. I don't think that combining the two is a major priority right now, the park has bigger issues that CF is working to right then that right now.

What other issues would Cedar Fair need to work with for CGA right now?

^ I take it you haven't been following the thread. They are fixing up deteriorating buildings, bringing entertainment back into the park, investing in large rides to fill gaps that have been created with removals, updating sound systems, improving food options, etc... Re-theming a kids area probably isn't a priority since it works fine how it is for now. With parks like KD, they have seen some huge installations with Dominator, I305, and even Windseeker. They can now look to those rides to entertain adults for a couple years and focus on the kids. With CGA, they are already incredibly kid friendly, they need to focus on other things like infrastructure and adult attractions.

^like better OTSR's or what? The only part that I don't enjoy is the corkscrew

If you're referring to Vortex, (The way you posted looks like you were referring to the Planet Snoopy thing), then yes. The corkscrew on Vortex is the part I dread . The rest really isn't so bad. With me, as I'm sure with most of you who rode it, there's very little head room and the excessive height on the restraints leave you with ears smashing into them. I often actually leave some extra room at the crotch but make up for it with shoulder crushing. Doing such, I can kind of stretch my neck and pull the head forward some so that my ears just clear the restraints when you go zooming into it.

I think that Vortex is probably the roughest stand-up I have been on. I really don't think it is good at all.

instead I see Vortex as actually being a decent forceful little Beemer, killed by its roughness. We can save the polished turd analogy for something else that sits in the back corner

How about Vortex being a newly themed (with new name) sit down, lap bar only ride? The "center of gravity" argument is moot. People have said "B&M would never ever ever do that" but those same people also insisted B&M would never allow one of their rides to be turned backwards. We really don't know... the stand-up coaster fad is long over, why not just make it a great comfortable roller coaster? Ok, I'll get my head out of the coaster-nerd-fantasy-cloud now. (But it's still a cool idea!)

I'm going to take a wild guess about Vortex's future, they'll give it a fresh coat of green paint for the track and purple paint for the supports and they'll renamed it "Mantis".

I'm going to be visiting this park the first weekend of April and I've never been, I have a few questions.

1. What would the lines be like on a Sunday?

2. I've never been on a stand up coaster before, would Vortex hurt my knees?

3. I hear you have to go through metal detector, do you have to take your cell phone, wallet out of your pocket?

Should be pretty quiet actually since its early in the season. Sundays are typically the quieter days.

Vortex shouldn't bang your knees up. But your head/ears, that's another story. Metal detectors...empty the pockets including cell phone, wallet... Sometimes I actually have to remove my belt depending on security. Believe it or not even my pack of gum tripped one of their wands, requiring me to take that out as well.

The lines should be light as it's not too crowded since it's the beginning of the season.

2. I've never been on a stand up coaster before, would Vortex hurt my knees?

I've never had a problem with my knees, I usually leave some leeway to bend a little, but it's your head that's another story lol, (be prepared for head banging)

3. I hear you have to go through metal detector, do you have to take your cell phone, wallet out of your pocket?

Yes, they'll ask you to take out your phones, keys, wallet etc that might set off the metal detector but they'll give you a bin to place it in.

Have a great time!

Anyway, I know this is only one coaster but the fact that its there and almost ready to open along with the other good things going on here, makes me really happy and hopefully means more great things are to come for this park.

I did the facepalm because of the name change of Vortex.

I know Vortex has never been super-popular, but I don't think it ever reached the level of PAIN that Iron Wolf did. The original green/black paint job was the best. Maybe I'm missing something, but didn't Vortex just get primer in spots?

Yeah, Wolf definitely was a lot worse. Vortex definitely is painful, but luckily it's super short.
