California Great America (CGA) Discussion Thread

Oh then I'm not interested in going. I thought all the rides would be open. But look forward to reading your report!

Yea I won't be going either, I'd rather take that $30 and put it towards next year's gold pass. I'll see plenty of inflatable Christmas decorations on my (free) stroll through Candy Cane Lane in Pacific Grove this December

Wow, this thing is getting massive! Those last two photos before the final one with Star Tower are really awesome.

Massive? GCI compact coaster? Does not....compute.....

This looks (well to me atleast) like it may become my #1 favorite wood coaster if it's anything like the animation. Fast, Twisty, head choppers, bunny hills. Perfect equation for a coaster. This thing looks surprisingly forceful, maybe a bit too forceful.

Is it me or does this look like it could be a little more intense than what was shown in the animation? Agreed, this ride is going to be packed with them throughout the ride.

Just imagine this...you've just come down the drop and you are floating in your seat as you whiz by the station. Just as you are coming back into your seat, you have 3 sections of track overhead (2 track sections from 'midway turn' and 1 section from what is coming out of the station) passing you by! This looks like a pretty tight space that the train's going to fly through!

I'm glad that after 2 weeks, I'm able to get my virtual Star Tower gold porn credit. Time to clean off my screen and take a nice shower now

Seeing those pictures made it hard for me to work today!

As promised, here is my end of season highlights/predictions for next year. I dug through my posts, and apparently I didn't do this last year, so I can't compare my predictions to what actually happened.

Highlights:

- Gold Striker construction! I'm sure this is everybody's highlight. The first time I saw that picture of land clearing back in May was probably the best moment I've had yet as a CGA fan.

- Five-person raft on Didgeridoo Falls (with my brother, Angry_Gumball and his cousin, and Robman). Never before have I felt a near-death experience on a ride. If I hadn't held on, I would have certainly fell out. Easily got a foot or so out of my seat!

-Trying out the body slides for the first time. Can't wait to go on these again!

- Five-person Logger's Run.

- Kiddy ride takeovers: Pumpkin Patch, Woodstock's.

- Haunt!

- Mini-ERT session on Drop Tower to end the season.

- Firefall open for the first day and whole season. Also, getting a backwards flip and flying over the water, Stealth-style.

- Getting addicted to Flying Eagles.

Predictions for next season:

- Gold Striker opens in late April/early May, and the ride consists of 50 percent tunnels. My goal is to be there on media day (please be on a Sunday!).

- That ugly blue on the Pictorium gets repainted to at least match Gold Striker.

- An older flat ride is removed. Amid all this excitement for Gold Striker, it wouldn't surprise me if a ride is ripped out for no apparent reason (remember, this is still CGA, after all).

- Demon's red train returns, orange gets sent back to rehab.

- Cabin #1 on Drop Tower returns, another (I'm going to say #4) goes down for the rest of season.

- No new mazes for Haunt, but Werewolf Canyon gets the next "Revamp'd" treatment.

- New shows.

- An announcement for a 2014 water slide, but nothing more.

I had a feeling UA and MMMM would have gotten zone/maze of the year! Those 2 were definitely solid spots in the park. It was nice however to see Gauntlet improve towards the end and was nice to see more effort in Werewolf Canyon. Sadly I can't say much about Deadman's Cove (or No man's cove)... Maybe next season it will get some TLC.

I don't know if this has been discussed before...but since Six Flag Kentucky Kingdom has been closed, why not see the return of Tidal wave/Greased Lightnin'? I'd honestly think that would be a fresh improvement to the park, the return of an original Marriott's ride.

My extremely high and unlikely expectations for the next following years after putting in Gold Striker would be:

-A launched coaster similar to Pony Express @ Knotts wrapping around Rip Roaring Rapids utilizing the old railroad right of way, a launched train type themed ride would be a nice tribute to a classic ride. I'm aware the Water tank, the railroad trestle, and the track bed between the Rapids and Flight Deck still remains there. So that space can be easily utilized

-A Windseeker in Inverti-Garden.

-The return of the Pictorium.

-New Water Slides.

-New Mazes/Scarezones for Haunt.

-The return of Tidal Wave/Greased Lightnin in the same location, or a Intamin Impulse.

-Removal of the Go Kart track/Psycho Mouse in favor of a Euro Fighter.

-New trains for Vortex.

-New Vekoma trains for The Demon which use the Lap-restraints.

-And one that will probably never happen Rocky Mountain Treatment on Grizzly.

These are the only things I could see happening honestly. It would be cool to see an extended Pony Express as it's already super short.

If CGA does get a Windseeker to put in the Invertigarden, they'll have to shorten it to meet the height limits due to nearby SJC. I'd want it to at least be taller than Drop Tower (225' tall), maybe in a 240-270ish range. I don't know what the exact height limits are for the park though...anyone know?

Is the height limit really due to the airport? I mean, I don't doubt that it is, it's just that it's not like I've ever witnessed planes just barely missing the tops of rides. The tallest rides in the park could be 4 times higher than they are and the planes still wouldn't even come close. How much buffer is considered enough?

As for the Rocky Mountain treatment not being likely for Grizzly, I couldn't agree more. It doesn't need topper track since it actually runs pretty smooth now. It's still a turd, but at least it's a smooth turd. A full Rocky Mountain makeover, along the lines of NTAG or the new Iron Rattler, would make little sense considering that they're adding Gold Striker. There would little in the way of marketability for it since the majority of park guests would think it's just the same old ride. Besides those points, Grizzly still gets pretty decent ridership despite being a pile of crap ride experience. Add all that up and you're left with the only hope for ever getting rid of Grizzly being someone acting carelessly with fire and flammable liquids in close proximity to the ride.

-Not likely but LOVE the idea of Tidal Wave, with that name, making a comeback to its original location, or an Intamin impulse

- Eurofighter would be perfect in the Invert-I-garden

-Pictorium probably will never re open, so get rid of it and use that space for another coaster or some awesome flat ride

-New trains for Vortex

-And somewhere in the park where the height limit is 200 feet+, and they can totally do it, a nice big mega coaster or Intamin Blitz coaster. There is still a good deal of room in this park to add more quality coasters and if they really wanted to they could always make room for them

Looking at a map, CGA is in the flight path of the airport. But it also varies from day to day. As sometimes the planes will land facing southward thus going over CGA. While most of the time the planes take off north. The only weird instance i've seen was while walking past Xtreme Skyflyer, I saw a plane flying in from that direction. Never seen it happen before. But i'd say for a safe buffer of at least 200 ft.
