Carowinds Discussion Thread

P. 417 - Fury back open now with 100% less crack!

^I pretty much agree with this. Most of their coasters are amazingly average. I think Vortex is good for a standup but that's not saying much. I like Vekoma flyers but most people don't so don't listen to me on that one. Intimidator is a good ride though and Fury and Afterburn are OMFG spectacular. Make sure you get some back seat rides on Afterburn. That pretzel is insane. If you spend most of your day on Fury, Afterburn and Intimidator and mix in things like the Top Scan, Plants vs Zombies, Southern Star, the Flyers, Windseeker and Enterprise nobody would fault you.

If you can, hit Nighthawk and Ricochet early. If you get Fastlane, ride Ricochet first if you want to ride it at all as I don't think it's on Fastlane.

The Flyers are a must as they encourage snapping. Also if you ride Woodstock Express, ride in the back. It has pretty decent airtime for a small coaster. As far as crowds go Saturdays are usually pretty busy. Sunday mornings are not as bad. You might want a Fast Pass for Saturday, but you can wait until you go and judge the crowd for yourself to see if you want it or not. If you do, be sure to buy the Fast Pass Plus because it Includes Fury, Intimidator and Nighthawk and PvZ. And if you like having ride photos, the FunPix is a good deal. 20 dollars for one day for unlimited Digital Photos.

One could almost compare Carowinds to Canada's Wonderland - I refer to Carowinds as "Canada's Wonderland South". A couple of good B&M coasters and after that, the quality of the rest drops significantly.

Thanks everybody for the responses! It's all helpful and appreciated. Depending on how busy it is we'll most likely try to mix in some of those other coasters/rides that have been suggested (besides Ricochet - I have never really enjoyed a wild mouse and I don't care for credits much). Can't wait for Fury and Afterburn though!

I've been on a couple and they've been sort of hit or miss for me. I rode Nighthawk when it was at CGA and I didn't care for it much. I rode Kings Island's Firehawk when it was at Geauga Lake and I didn't like it then, but when I went to KI a couple years ago I loved it, so I don't know what the deal is with that.

Things all Musik Express/Himalaya rides should really have:

- Loud music

- Running at full intended speed (both directions preferrably)

- Tons of lights in good working order

- Strobe Lights/Siren/Foghorn for when ride hits full speed

- An operator that talks up the ride and asks if the rubes want to go faster

- Oh, and a "tunnel" backdrop.

I appreciate that Carowinds is adding a classic Musik Express to their lineup, but as others have pointed out, with this being Cedar Fair, this will probably be as basic as Cedar Point's ironically-named Super Himalaya. Compared to Waldameer's insane Music Express, there's nothing "super" about it!

Casino Piers musik express is epically insane. The DJ is incredible and when he pushes it full speed he sounds the foghorn and the fog machine and strobe lights go crazy. Yea this won't be at Cedar Fair parks hell they don't even have the back tunnel section and loud music. It'll be ran in a cycle like every other flat ride.

^The music express at Casino Pier is the best one I've been on. It runs a ridiculously long cycle, goes way faster than most ones I've seen, and has all of those (except I don't remember if there's anything special when it hits full speed or not.) I still need to try the indoor one at Knoebels.

The one at Knoebels is pretty balls out as well. The indoor aspect elevates the whole experience in my opinion. It's like what a Gravitron should have been.

Music Expresses aren't that much of a priority for flat rides for me at most parks. But it is kind of ridiculous that I haven't been on Cosmotron. I've been to Knoebels 5 times, but there's so many other must-do rides!

Has anyone been on a Top Scan at a park? I've heard the one at Thorpe Park for example runs a tame cycle. So I think the one coming here will be that way, too. I haven't even been to any place that has a Top Scan, but they look really cool.

I've been on Shockwave many times at my home park, Canada's Wonderland. In my opinion, it has a decent program which allows for quite a bit of flipping. But, it isn't crazy like the programs seen on Mondial Top Scans among travelling midways. But, for an intense (or more so thrilling) ride on any Top Scan, I suggest sitting in the outer seats of any gondola, and have your arms up throughout the entire ride.

Ugh they took the lights off the colored sections.

I'm guessing they will put lights back on once it is in the final location. As far as I know, all four rides will have beautiful lighting packages installed.

Agreed. It's easier to install a ride and then install the lights than to install the ride with the lights.
