Coaster Firsts

Recommended Posts

What is one of the first types/elements of coasters that you can think of? Name the coaster, its location, and why it is/contains the first of it's kind. Please limit one first per post, and do not double post unless there is an extended amount of time without posting. Here is an example:

^ That's actually incorrect. MBB made the first one.

From another thread at TPR, in which I also found this info elsewhere on the net...

^ The Bat was actually the second suspended coaster, MBB made a suspended coaster called "Alpenflug" for Oktoberfest in Munich, that failed for the same reasons, it only operated for the 2 weeks of the Oktoberfest, But Arrow didn't care/know of these problems.

Also, Schwartzkopf had a working model around the same time, and one was planned for Busch Gardens in 1984, but never took off. (The Schwartzy-one looked awesome!)

I may or may not be correct, but the very first coaster to be launch forward and backwards (and have a single loop in it) was the Schwartzkopf's creation King Kobra in Kings Dominion. In other parks, they used the name "Greezed Lightin'", but it's the same ride.

When King Kobra debuted in 1978, this coaster was the first of its kind. No other coaster launched the riders through a loop and then sends you backwards.

First dive coaster in the world: Oblivion at Alton Towers

First tubular steel roller-coaster in the world: Matterhorn Bobsleds at Disneyland, probably one of the biggest innovations in steel coaster engineering.

First 'modern' vertical loop: Revolution at sfmm, Schwarzkopf perfected the design of the loop and made it possible to ride without suffering 12 g or other problems

What about Bisby's Spiral Airship, from 1902?

Actually, it did take off in a way. Big Bad Wolf had a big involvement by Schwarzkopf and Stengel, however Arrow produced the ride for the park.

Sorry to say that this is a common misconception, there are older coaster that uses tubular steel track. No one as large as Matterhorn but there still is some older, check RCDB.

First interlocking corkscrew element: Kumba, Busch Gardens Africa, 1993

Actually Drachen Fire's corkscrews interlocked before one of them was removed

not as tight of an interlock as Kumba's but I would still call this an interlocked corkscrew.

^I think those are more intersecting than interocking. Interlocking corkscrews go (essentially) parallel to each other, and the track leading into one travels under the other. In Drachen, it was just more one corkscrew going over track which happened to have a corkscrew as well. Kinda like how coasters have corkscrews that go over walking paths.

First (and only as of 2008) inverted interlocking corkscrews--Nemesis Inferno, Thorpe Park
