coastercrazy216
This is incredible. I actually used to live in Utah and go up there every summer. I already have plans to come visit the park. It looks great and I am so excited!
hphappy
Shane, Got a question on Volcano. I think I remember artist renderings of the ride (before it actually opened) that displayed the ride with Flying Dutchman trains.. ie X-Flight, Nighthawk. Is my memory incorrect or was that just a marketing mistake? Or were there some secret plans to actually create the ride with those type of trains? A flying Volcano coaster? Now that would be cool. Â No, Volcano was never planned to be a flying coaster. The original Vekoma Flying Dutchman was always intended to go to PGA. The prototype was actually designed to maneuver around the train (when it existed)
Mark Rosenzweig
The prototype was actually designed to maneuver around the train (when it existed) Â Which makes the Great America Railroad's removal even more puzzling (prior to Stealth's removal). Let's design some funky columns to span the railroad (still visible at Carowinds) and then remove the ride we built around just a year or two later. montezooma
ASTROWORLD  Well it is that time of year again, time to get out and see the "new" rather than looking back at the "old" ...Yes it is time again for the Season Finale of Shane's Amusement Attic. Another year has gone by and it is hard to believe that this thread has broken into the top 8 viewed threads with over 360,000 views. Thanks to everyone who keeps sharing their thoughts and interest in my thread.  I wanted to save this multi-day Season Finale for something Special and I can't think of anything better than AstroWorld. Of all the parks that have closed over the years this is the park I miss the most. AstroWorld was the first park I was ever employed by. At the age of 16 I moved to Houston with a family friend just so I could work at AstroWorld. I started of on the 610 limited then went to Greezed Lightnin and finally ended up on the opening crew of Thunder River.  Over the years AstroWorld was known by many different names.  - AstroWorld - AstroWorld a member of the Six Flags Family - AstroWorld Houston's SIX FLAGS theme park - AstroWorld a SIX FLAGS theme park - Six Flags AstroWorld - Six Flags Houston ...and finally back again to -AstroWorld a Six Flags theme park  Whatever you want to call it AstroWorld was a park that died an UNNECESSARY death. And along with it's untimely closing we lost some GREAT coasters including one of my all time favorites GREEZED LIGHTNIN'.  I hope this look back at AstroWorld brings back some great memories, and I hope you all have a GREAT season out at the parks.  See you again in the FALL for Season 3 of Shane's Amusement Attic!  -Shane  PS- and don't forget to check out Cowabunga Bay, my new waterpark in Salt Lake City, Utah...it opens in just a couple weeks!!! good ride...shi$ty trains another Schwarzkopf favorite...the Viper the #1 Roller Coaster of it's time Of course the park had other coasters, as a matter of fact this is the ride that put the park on the map! love this pic My favorite ride at the park, but of course I am a HUGE Schwarzkopf Shuttle Loop fan! and now for some facts another great AstroWorld icon, the AstroWheel The TRUE symbol of AstroWorld...the AstroNeedle Edited April 17, 2010 by montezooma

jjeerr
I always think $13.50 for a ticket is really cheap, but I can get a SFDK ticket for $29.99 online. Â After 20-30 years, that really isn't that bad.

Thanks so much Shane! -Tatum "1968-2005" G,  Yes Tatum, I know you have been patiently waiting. There is a lot more to come. You have 4 months to catch up with me. You may get close...but I have one more secret up my sleeve. You keep all the TPR-ers entertained during the season, I'll entertain them in the off season. Erik Johnson
I was lucky enough to visit Astroworld back in its hayday in 1978. Even though I was only 5 years old I still have vivid memories of this park. While the only coaster I was able to ride was The Serpent, I was able to ride several of the classics such as the Alpine Sleighs, River of No Return, Bamboo Chute, The Astrowheel, and so on and so forth. I do remember standing to simply watch Greezed Lighnin' do its thing as well as Dexter Freebish (It really looked bigger than a mine train to a 5 year old). thrillerman1
Great season finale Shane! I too have always loved anything to do with AW. It amazes me that Randall Duell was able to cram 12 themed lands into this park! Has any park ever exceeded that many lands/themes at once?! montezooma
AstroWorld Souvenir Books  I love Souvenir Books from parks, they are such a great way to keep track of the parks as they change through the years. You can really see some changes here in the souvenir books of AstroWorld.

paintballer
Question Shane, I saw a youtube video of a guy claiming Wildcatter at SFoT to be the relocated Sky Screamer. True or False? It's false right?
astroworldfan1
^I'll answer for Shane. Â It's false. It was sent to Six Flags St. Louis (was then SFoMA). Tough it was sent; it was never rebuilt. The trains, however; were sent to Six Flags Great Adventure. Â -Tatum
megamatt
Astroworld looked cool. Too bad its gone now. They could of sold off a worse park in the chain.
