SIX FLAGS MAGIC MOUNTAIN

I am back from my Dallas trip for the opening of Six Flags over Texas. It was a pretty good weekend. I had not been to Six Flags over Texas in probably 10 years or so. I have to say while it used to be one of my more favorite Six Flags Parks, it is really starting to show it's age. The park is OUTDATED! The crowds were fairly small and thanks to the rain on Sunday, everything was pretty much a walk on.

Anyways the trip got me in a Six Flags mood (the new saying at Six Flags is "Have a Six Flags Day") so I thought I would do a Six Flags update, Since Magic Mountain was my home park growing up, I have a lot of things from the park. Here is an old souvenir book from sometime in the 90's. Z-Force, Spillinkin Corners, Mystic Lake, Metro, Dolphins and Condor where all staples at the park, not to mention a beautiful looking Revolution and Colossus and the newley added Ninja.

Magic Mountain...how can you not LOVE this park????

The Dolphin Show was one of the first attractions Six Flags added when they bought the park. So it would have been sometime around 1979 or 1980. El Bumpo bumper boats were removed to make way for the Aqua Theater which is now where the Batman Stunt Show is.

^^^ Metro hasn't operated since 2003, so you couldn't have ridden it in 2004 anyway. Also, it is not coming back, so says park management---and it comes up during every Q&A session, along with removing Revolution's OTSRs. I, too, would like to see something done with Metro, but...

It's. Not. Gonna. Happen.

^ I've thought the same thing, but removing that track is an expense that the company doesn't want to incur at this time (my guess). Also, at one of the events sometime back, I believe that it was Tim Burkhart who said that they've been "playing with some ideas" about how to use the track, but that's no guarantee that anything will be done with it. I've said many times that I think something like the Seuss Trolley at IOA or the old Rocket Rods at Disneyland would be a good idea, but only time will tell.

Honestly, I think once Six Flags is more financially secure, the track will disappear.

I really wish they'd have a transportation ride at the park because it'd be nice to take a load off and take a trip around the park in the middle of the day. And if you want to cater to families what better way than to provide mom and dad some walking breaks.

I think this photo explains pretty well the reason the park added the OTSR's to Revolution mainly for liability reasons. Look at the guy in the second car, what the heck is he doing with his arms? I can only imagine stuff like this went on all the time, guests maneuvering themselves around and probably putting themselves in danger thanks to the freedom of lap bars only.

^That pic doesnt looks too dangerous. A lot of coasters give you freedom like that because they don't have OTSR's and nothing serious usually happens.

SFMM does need some sort of transportation ride. It's a pain pushing people on wheelchairs through that huge park. I agree with EBL on the Metro tracks being removed when the park has the money.

^ Cost. I've already talked to Jay about that and he said that it would take $10 million or more to get Metro back up and running. Six Flags---even in good financial times---can't justify spending that kind of money to refurbish an attraction that they can't market as a new attraction. Would you go running out to SFMM because they got a NEW MONORAIL!? Didn't think so.

Of course not. I'm just saying, whats the point of removing it when you can update it sometime in the near future. I'm sure it wouldnt draw hundreds of new people to the park, but I'm sure it'd be a well appreciated by everyone. Of course that'd mean they'd have to hike up the ticket prices to cover the cost.

Oh, and I would so go running out to SFMM for a new monorail if it had fire effects and onboard audio

I love (actually hate, but love sounds better) how in movies they always use variations of "Magic Mountain" and its rides as the names of parks that the characters visit. Like in "Encino Man"- they go to Mega Mountain and ride the Vapor. I've seen TV shows that reference Miracle Mountain too. I am sure there are others but this is all I can think of off-hand. Oh wait...what's the park's name when it appears in the cheesy movie Roller-Coaster (you know your a coaster nerd when you watch that movie and sit there and describe, in detail, the reasons why that movie was impossible).

Its kind of lame that the writers of these movies couldn't come up with something that wasn't so obviously a rip off of their closest park.

One of my favorite fictional park names comes from a movie...Anyone remember "Sky's The Limit" in Detroit?

ROCKY MOUNTAIN CONSTRUCTION

(Texas Giant Remodel)

One of the most exciting threads I have been following is the Rebuilding of Texas Giant. I have long loved this ride (although I base my feelings on the first years I rode it, I have not ridden it lately) Anyways, the conversion from wood to steel is something that really might help the popularity of some of these old Giant woodies that are expensive to maintain and let's face it...their popularity is hindered by their roughness.

Gemini has always been a favorite ride of mine, it is fast, smooth and still gives your the feel of riding on top of a wood structure. Imagine how GREAT Texas Giant could be if it had the smoothness, speed and still the old wooden feel...well it is going to happen in 2011 and I CAN'T WAIT!

So who is responsible for this conversion? Well I am sure Six Flags has a lot to do with it but the construction company behind the engineering and building is a little company out of Idaho. Over a year ago I met with this company, Rocky Mountain Construction, with the idea of building Cowabunga Bay. We met several times, and although in the end we selected a local construction company I must give high praises to this company. They were detailed, concise and had a GREAT handle on what is involved in building these multi-million dollar attractions. I look forward to what they do with the Giant.

So for those of you that are not familiar with this company, here is the company brochure and a few pictures of the projects that they have worked on. I think you might be familiar with some of them...El Toro, Aftershock (formerly Deja Vu), The Villian (Geauga Lake) and T-Express in Korea.
