Categorising people

Hello TPR,

Well recently I have got into R.E.M, I know they are old but they are really good. But I know, If I show my mate, he won't like it because there isn't any guitars or screaming in it. I really do think this is quite sad. I mean, because I have glasses I would be known as a "geek", but luckily for me I have friends who respect me for who I am not what I look like. But most of my friends think they fit into one category of another. E.G my friend thinks he's grunger because he has long hair and listens to Nirvana, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and some other "grunge" bands which I have never heared of.

 

I think this is a big shame because younge people should have a much more wider veriety of music choice and not be to scared to listen to something more unusual just because their "friends" are listening to them. It really makes me sad when I show my friends the talents of some bands like The GO! Team, only to be told their crap a.k.a not cool enough for him to get into.

 

What is your view on this?

I don't mind categorizing myself. And apparently I'm a Grunger, I have long hair (Lets just say I can EAT my bangs) and I was just listening to Nirvana 30 secs ago, so yeah... Kidding, but I DO have long hair and WAS listening to Nirvana. But at my school there are categorizations, Like skater, Emo, Sean (Pronounced "Seen" meaning dressing/acting emo, but not actually Emo), Wigga, N*gga, Gangsta, and prep just to name a few. And as for not listening to certain musics because my friends are listening, we like most of the same music anyway, so it doesn't make a difference

^ Same here. I really don't mind catergorizing myself. Same as at our school, there are emos/rockers, nerds, more nerds, cholos, and then there is my group, the skaters/preppy. I would put myself more towards skaters. Even though I don't skate, I basically wear the same clothes as them. You could also call me a rocker because I listen to Metallica (and other bands) and I have super long hair. But, I really don't think catergorizing people is bad.

Me, I would be more of a "cool nerd." I am one of a very high intelligence, I'm one of the best Tuba players in the county, I like roller coasters a lot, yet I still have a lot of friends. I am (well, actually almost all of the smart people in my school) are actually respected for our intelligence, not picked on, for the most part. We tend to have cool nerds, outcasts, popular people, "skimpy" girls, (I'm putting it in a nice way) skaters, jocks, emo, "punks" (those who constantlyplay guitar, basically only listen to '80's rock and think that any type of music other than '80's rock is a piece of complete crap). Luckily there are no band geeks because heck some of the popular people play instruments and the music in our schools are actually pretty well respected, and those popular people are actaully pretty nice. The only people that really pick on me are the punks, but they are just losers. Since I am one of only two people in my school district that knows about NL (and since I've had it for three years) I am actually considered the coaster guru - my designs are well known to be insane, which in fact, I'm doing a presentation in Project Lead the Way for NL (high school engineering course.) So yeah, I guess I am lucky to be in a school where nerds aren't really nerds, we are considered a higher status.

I'm almost everything. I have no real category im in. And at my school we really make no big deal about categories cause basically everybody is friends. We do have our own little groups but theres no grudges or anything and when it comes to party everyone gets along so its all good.

 

I listen to everything. I listen to the odd rap music but I listen to hardcore but also stuff like Pearl Jam, The Tragically Hip, and I can go all the way to stuff like Aerosmith and a bunch of classic rock. I basically listen to something that sounds good instead of something that I dont like but listen to because its cool.

 

When it comes to clothes I wear Volcom and Hurley and Billabong etc and Billabong and Circa jeans but I will also wear Lacoste shirts the odd time and I also sport I guess "gangster" New Era 59Fifty hats but. Hey, I like who I am. People know I like computers and so on but im not considered anything.

I basically listen to anything from Backstreet Boys (yeah, I'm stuck in the '90s like my dad is stuck in the '60s) to Pete Warren (bet you never heard of him) to Autopilot Off to the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

The highly categorized phase of high school is apparent for most people around that age. Mostly, it is just people trying to fit in somewhere. Chances are your friend is not going to like R.E.M. if you have him listen to it. Years from now, that will probably change, and he will probably open himself up to different genres since life just isn't like that after highschool.

 

It's funny because, college is almost like the anti-high school... The more different/open you are about all sorts of stuff, the better, for the most part. Anyway, I would say just let your friend be into whatever music he is right now, and attempt to introduce things to him later down the line if it means that much to you.

Stereotypes are a HUGE part of high school. My high school can be summed up by the movie Mean Girls, with some exceptions.

 

I don't really have a problem with people labeling me, because I'm guilty of it myself. I don't normally let someone's stereotype affect my opinion of them though.

 

I've been called scene, and I'll own up to it. I have friends from so many different stereotypes though, I hate when people won't give people a chance if they don't dress like them.

I place people into one of three categories:

 

People whom I like.

 

People whom I'm neutral towards.

 

People whom I dislike.

 

Most people fall into the last category. All jokes aside, once you get out of high school the whole "group" thing does diminish to a large extent. Granted many people, myself included, has a core group of friends, even well beyond the end of my high school years.

"Oh my god gay people are so wrong" "They can't even help it mate, they are born with it, I have lots of friends who are gay", and then he moves to the back of the classroom because he thought I was gay! That really p!ssed me off.

 

Anyway, I guess (not in a boastfull way) I am a bit more mature for my age then some of my other friends.

Wow, I never thought that some schools would really fit that sort of stereotype! I always imagined the film to be a satire of how stupid teenagers are! There aren't as many 'categories' I guess you would say, here in Germany as there are in the USA but of course we have girls who are plastics too and the Goths... etc. However, I honestly don't know what category I would fall under.....? Maybe European?

I'd only really categorize myself as a "Gamer," artist, or the obvious, Coaster Enthusiast. I listen to all sorts of music from video game soundtracks to techno to almost any kind of rock (mainly punk). So, I guess I can categorize myself as a proud to be a nerd..lol...I always seem to find real life situations and make video game references.

 

In high school, the main groups of people were mainly rappers/wanna-be gang bangers. I guess many of you are right...once you hit up college, especially universities, people become more of themselves than they are any specific 'cool' identity. In community colleges, that would slightly be another story as many students are quite immature.

I would also call myself a cool nerd because I do really well in my school work. So far, in all three years of my middle school life, I've been the only guy in my grade to get a 4.0, which is pretty awesome. All my friends know I'm smart and they ask me for help when they have problems with something on their homework. It feels really good to be a nerd and fit in at the same time.

Well Brent, I also have a GPA of 4.0, and would not consider myself a nerd. I don't think you're a nerd either. It really is a shame that we would be labeled nerds just because we're smart! I say someone is a nerd if they dress weird, talk about school stuff all of the time, ect.......Not a person who is just intelligent!

 

IMO, if the term "cool nerd" just means you're smart and cool, the nerd part needs to be removed!
