Just got back from seeing Paranormal Activity, I'd give it a 4/10 at the highest. It reminded me of The Blair Witch Project kind of, but on a completely different topic. The scary parts weren't really scary either, it made you jump a bit, but that was probbly because of the noise more than anything else. On that note, the sound effects were really well done, but that is about the most positive thing I can give it

I just got back from Paranormal Activity and thought it was well done. I think a lot of the scare factor just has to do with each person's level of beliefs. I didn't think there were that many "jump scares". I liked the low level of eerieness throughout.

 

I do think they did very well as far as using a handheld camera and coming off as a realistic couple.

Paranormal Activity lives up to the hype in my opinion. That stuff happens to people in real life! I loved the hell outa the movie, and it freaked me out and made me squirm in my seat, and even cover my eyes! This is one of the greatest films ever!!!

 

That kind of stuff creeps me out, and if you can put a bit of faith into a film, you'll like it. Of course, this movie will have reactions like Blair Witch. Some will LOVE it...some hate. The films are similar, too.

I saw the movie Paranormal Activity today and I'm still scared. It has to be the scariest movie I've ever seen in my life. It's not that it was extremely well made or executed, just everything that happened was so terrifying . . . words can't even describe it. The ending was definitely horrifying. I couldn't even watch it. If you want to be scared out of you're mind, GO SEE IT. It's definitely worth the $5-10 bucks and you'll definitely be scared.

I give it 4.5/5 stars.

^^^The funny thing about your statement is, I love Blair Witch, but I personally think Paranormal is only good enough for 1 watch.

 

Anyways, I've got some reviews to bust out.

 

I posted the first two of these a while back, but it was during the hacking and they didn't get posted right or something. Some of you might have already read my thoughts on these, so I'll keep the first 2 short.

 

Where The Wild Things Are:

A movie that doesn't underestimate your kids. A very dark setting and storyline feeds to a good sense of realism and takes you back to the time your imagination worked like this. If you go see it, remember to bring a box of kleenex, it doesn't end happy. 8/10

 

Law Abiding Citizen:

Possible candidate for best movie of the year. Excellently written, and even better acted. The characters are completely ambiguous letting you decide who to root for and making it seem like these could be real people. It's the American version of V for Vendetta. 10/10

 

Now it's time for the newest one I've seen.

Saw VI:

First I say they should have ended with the first one, then the second one, and then they definitely should have ended it with the 5th one. This is actually my least favorite in the entire franchise. They upped the gore a little, but the storyline just feeds off of what we already know. The only twist in the plot they tried to pull off was obvious and predictable from the start. It could have been better, but truly, I think it's time for this franchise to die. 3/10

Zombieland-9/10

I loved it and it was very funny. This movie showed the perfect face for when a man found the last Twinkie on Earth.

 

CDF: The Vampire's Assistant-6/10

Didn't follow the book a lot, but it is a great movie to take the family if they can stand 6-7 profanity words. John C. Reilly brought good comedy to the movie.

Zombieland - 9/10, a lot of fun, loved it, really nails the fine line between horror & comedy.

 

Paranormal Activity - 9/10, scary, Blair Witch meets the Exorcist, very effective.

 

Jennifer's Body - 8.5/10, really interesting movie with lots of subtle undercurrents - I got it, but it seems like a lot didn't.

Paranormal Activity - 10/10 - I can't say enough about this movie so I will just say this, it is SO EFFING GOOD to finally see an effing horror movie that knows that gore is not scary, I don't mind gore but HELLO MCFLY a person bleeding from a chopped off limb is NOT scary!!! GREAT movie I would recommend it to anybody!

 

Saw VI - 7/10 - Being a huge cult fan of the Saw films I was really a bit let down, the Traps felt rehashed and it didn't feel as gory as the other films, despite everyone saying it was the goriest. The storyline was good in continuing the running plotlines without screwing them up BUT the main trap, in the end, was so disconnected from the main plotline the movie was trying to follow that I was a little disappointed. On top of that is was the weakest and most predictable of all the twists the Saw series has had thus far. I will recommend it to saw fans as the plotline is interesting but if you haven't seen the other ones see them first or this movie will make very little sense to you.

I also went to see Saw VI this weekend. I would place it the 4th or 5th best in the series. I did not like the way it ended at all, I thought this was going to be the last one made but the ending sure didn't make it look that way.

The things that I find really scary are the unseen. A man in a mask chasing someone with a knife is not scary to me, nor is seeing people chopped up and bleeding. What's scary to me is not seeing what's doing it; not knowing when it's there and when it's not, or what it's going to do next. In that aspect, this movie definitely delivers. It has quite a few jump scares that had our audience screaming. I love paranormal stuff and watch all the ghost shows (Ghost Hunters in particular) so this movie really intrigued me and I walked away from it very satisfied with my $9.25 spent.

If you want to watch a movie that is actually creepy, twisted, and bizarre I would suggest "Anti-Christ". I must warn though, it can be extremely graphic (sexual and violent). It is an amazing piece of cinematography and although I'm not a big fan of using this word, it is very artsy. It's a great story, it has many levels of metaphor, and it is extremely creepy, scary, horrifying, and depressing.

I didn't think Paranormal Activity was amazing or anything, just that I like that type scary movie (more suspense than horror) better. Exorcist I may try; Poltergeist I've seen bits and pieces of, but probably should watch; seen all the Halloweens and they didn't interest me, much less scare me; don't care anything about seeing Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Nightmare on Elm Street, too horror-esque for me.

 

I like the anxiety type of scare in the unseen stuff. Does that make sense? The dread that it creates not knowing what's lurking just beyond the light. I find a movie like Signs, for example, scarier than Halloween. That clicking noise they made creeps me out to this day. My husband does it to me every time we pass a cornfield.

Those are two that I would like to see, actually. As to the ghost hunter shows, I don't know if I take it seriously either, but I think some strange things do happen that can't be explained. Whether that's science or something else, who knows?

I have seen all of those movies except Susperia which is high on the list of must sees for me and I enjoyed them all, but why can't people get enjoyment out of new versions of movies that use old techniques that work? If we keep living in a world of, "This wasn't as good as such and such" we will continue on the downward spiral of remakes of old horror classics getting botched by making them, "Scarier because theyre gorier" and the horror genre will fade into an oblivion of crap.

 

On the second point, this is a movie that makes you seem hypocritical. That movie wasn't original either, it was psychologically "scary" because of fear of the unknown, Exorcist, and it was another torture porn movie. So no I don't recommend that as a better example of new horror that is as good as the classics. If that movie is to be considered scary, creepy, and horrifying then so is Saw because that series pokes at peoples moral values, and even as a huge Saw fan I would never say they were creepy, scary, or horrifying.

Yes horror movie remakes are pretty awful, though can be fun for comedy sometimes! The acting was pretty bad but it made it more realistic to me, it almost seemed as if the people were real people who were trying to act for the camera. If you put people in front of a camera they act awkward. If the actors were flawless it would've killed the realism a bit. That is my take on that.

 

On the Anti-Christ thing I actually have to retract my statements about that because I haven't even seen that I got it mixed up with another movie whose title escapes me so sorry about that!

I thought Paranormal Activity did a great job of creating a creepy atmosphere and mood. Every time it switched to the bedroom at night it made me tense in anticipation of something happening.

 

I agree with dammie16 about the acting. They were trying to create a feeling of realism, like they were just two regular people with a camera, so of course they're acting wouldn't be flawless.

I saw this movie a few days ago and it blew my mind. It really shows how much dedication Jackson had to these concerts and the whole thing was just unbelieveable. I was a little agrivated that there wasn't any material from Off The Wall and barely anything from Invincible, but other than that, it was EPIC.
